Just got back from the theater. I wanted to like this so much, but I did not. Neither did my 17-yo son, fwiw. We both loved Hereditary and Midsommer, and while I wouldn't say the same for Beau is Afraid, it still had a distinct fantasy element that made it clear you were watching something not quite real. This movie, though, isn't sure what it wants to be. At the Alamo pre-show, they showed part of a podcast discussion between Ari Aster and Bill Hader, and Aster mentioned how he had been wanting to make a modern western for several years before Hereditary, but he got bored with it and knew it was missing something, so he put it aside. COVID and the political stuff seem almost ancillary to the story, like a McGuffin, and as we went through the movie I kept thinking that the conflict between the sheriff and mayor and protestors could've been over anything. It seems like Aster just wanted to make this modern western, and COVID gave him the hook that he could use to sell it. More spoiler-y stuff below. Very curious what you all think.

I think he's more likely to fade away more than crash and burn. Dude has been hard on his body and only played 54 games total the last 2 seasons combined.

NBA Offseason Thread 2025 - Fuck OKC

I have followed his career since he left Lancaster to go play for Flower Mound Marcus. He has never been a player I have cared much for. Unless he pulls a 2020 Rondo this is a wasted roster spot. The only guys that have ever suited up for the Purple and Gold I did not root for were Smush Parker and Chris Mihm. I remember the Lakers getting Mihm and he put up an age 25 stat line almost identical to the one Vlade Divac had when he was THIRTY-FIVE. Mihm wasn’t a winner and was soft. Smart has an edge about him, but never learned to shoot. I‘ll root for Smart, but only until he inevitably crashes and burns. -

I love that someone took the time to digitally black out something on a photo of a phone that hadn’t existed for 20 years by the time the ability to digitally black out something on a photo came about. 😂 -

I don't know if he needs to be less of a spaz or lean into it even further and just fucking aspergers Scottie to death at a major next year. "And here's Bryson cleaning up for par while reciting lyrics from the HMS Penifore..."

Well for sure they did. Elgin Baylor spent weekends serving his country while playing. Guys made very little and worked in the off-season in regular jobs in football and basketball especially. Something that I live by in life is that I hope I do something to make the lives of people and generations I will not be alive to see, better. Some of these players need to adjust their thinking to something similar. They may not reap a financial windfall, but they are laying the groundwork for future generations of players and perhaps revenue growth will help them in their later years with a better pension and healthcare. The instant gratification mindset never leads to long-term stability.

Damn, I’m real good, just flip Zeke & Freeman. -
Clips from 2021’s Old Henry have been showing up for me lately. That’s a damn solid recent western. Grizzled Stephen Dorff needs to be in more stuff.
