Auburn making us look good. Multiple factions developing...from an SI article:

Another camp likes defensive coordinator Kevin Steele (34). That quickly gained traction Monday afternoon, and that also would be the Auburn-est hire imaginable. Would a school pay more than $21 million to buy out a coach only to hire his assistant? A guy who had a 9-36 record as a head coach at Baylor—including a 1-31 conference record? One school might.

Steele was 14 years old when he coached Baylor?  Did he win a Madden championship to get the job?

possibly. What happened to Herman this year.

Herman happened is what happened here. He grossly underperformed expectations and recruiting tanked. That and his OL coach is a horrible recruiter.

Almost beat Jimbo and that was the game for which he was paid 75 million by A&M. Beats Saban sometimes.

Why is he worse than any of the other non-Urban Meyer coaches? NCAA violations out there?

I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.

If you have watched A&M play, they suck. The teams they've beaten have just sucked more. Florida is the lone exception, and their defense is terrible. Malzahn is an "offensive" coach, yet his offense looks dreadful.

I mean most of the teams we play suck and Tom Herman still just barely wins/loses so all we need for an upgrade is a coach who can beat teams that suck.

But fair enough, just a thought.

And nobody is bragging about beating us or almost beating us. Our offense is much better than aggy's.

    This season's stats:
    UT yards gained/game: 457.3; A&M yards gained/game: 429.8

    UT points scored/game: 41.3; A&M points scored/game: 31.6

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/stats/team

UT's offense is statistically better, but "much better" may be debatable.  And that's after playing in a pass happy, high scoring system and conference.

I wish the Ole Miss game hadn't been cancelled due to Covid in Ole Miss; that team plays sort of like a prototypical Big 12 team, and would have been interesting to see the clash of two systems head on.  It would also have likely helped increase the average of yards gained and points scored for A&M on the season.

Yeah, anyone who watched the LSU game was wondering if the QBs were throwing with their feet. That was just shitty offense all around. Jimbo does a great job of using the Tight End and shortening the game, two things we are not good at.

Then again, we aren't bragging about our team and we aren't delusional enough to imagine we deserve to be in the playoff. We almost unanimously want to fire our coach.

A bit off subject, but I've seen this "high scoring conference" a few times and, while it has been the case in the past, it is not the case this year.   Currently the SEC is the high scoring/no defense conference.   What I haven't figured out yet is if that is due to playing styles changing or because of scheduling.

Currently there are three SEC schools in the top ten offensively and zero Big 12 schools.   The top two Big 12 schools, by yards per play, are Oklahoma at 17 and Iowa State at 23.   For comparison, A&M is 28th and Texas is 30th.

Defensively, the SEC is a bit worse at giving up yards this year, averaging over a half yard more per play than the Big 12, which amounts to about 70-80 yards of extra offense per game, give or take.  On the "how could this be!?" take; LSU, Arkansas, and Ole Miss are all giving up more yards per play than Kansas.   Ouch.

On the flip side, defenses in the Top 50 of yards per play, give up around 5.4 y/p.   21% of the SEC is represented (Alabama, Georgia, and A&M) while the Big 12 has 60% (WVU, OU, OkSt, ISU, Texas and TCU).

So, either the Big 12's offenses suck this year or they have learned to play D against the spread.   Or, the SEC is unable to stop the spread or is having a down year defensively or playing 10 conference games instead of 8 skews the numbers.

So your whole argument for bad offense is one game played in rain and mud? I gave you season-long stats.

Other stats like 3rd down attempted and converted show that Jimbo's offense may be plodding but with the right players it can plod along to a lot of yards and points. A&M is 3rd or 4th in the country in 3rd down conversions at about 55%; UT converts 3rd down at less than 40%.

You have to agree that stat tells you one O is more disciplined and systematic while the other O relied too heavily on its great QB to make things happen.  This can also be seen from the sacks allowed stat: A&M has allowed only 4 sacks the whole season, good for 5th rank; UT O has allowed 20 sacks, good for 65th rank.

But hey, keep Herman and his system. It does produce an exciting game!

great point; I think next season will give you an idea of the trend. I suspect Miss St and Ole Miss high flying O's will either land like a thud, or will continue to influence the rest of the SEC and it will become more high scoring conference.

In any case, back to the topic: I'm still glad Auburn's impatience has removed Malzahn. If they bring a completely new type of coach with a new system (possibly another one with high-octane O?), that will require another cycle or two of different players to be recruited and acclimated to the new system; Jimbo must be happily counting a W for that game come next season...

A few thoughts - first I do think it was time. SI had a very good article that pointed out that he was refusing to adapt to the defenses that had adapted to his offense. He did not develop talent like a coach should. I think he is a fantastic person and have heard no ex player say anything bad so I wish him the best. It's also not 21M all at once - think it is half and then the rest over 3 or 4 years so it isn't too bad. My problem is going to be that the powers that be will find a way to screw this up by meddling (which a horrible but true tradition). Sometimes the meddling works out - Bowden was was fantastic for 3-4 years and Tuberville was great for 7-8 but the meddling doesn't end after the hire - it just continues. They need to get a coach that can develop talent - Malzahn had top 10-15 recruiting classes multiple times without that talent improving. One thing I loved about Tuberville was his ability to see potential and develop it (he claimed he learned from Jimmy Johnson) which hasn't happened since. They also need a coach to tell them to stay out of the football business but I just don't see that happening.

Mond sucks and didn't progress as much as one would have hoped, no doubt about that.  And his backups in that QB room don't inspire much confidence either. Jimbo will have nobody to blame but himself if none of the ones already on campus or the one recruited pan out as starters come next season.  Additionally, he will also have a revamped and younger OL...yikes! That 31 points average per game scored may be a high water mark.

Nah. Malzahn is a decent offensive coordinator with a "tricky" offense. Great coaches don't go 68-35 (with a 2-6 bowl record and no Natty) in a major program.

Averaging 8.5 wins per year sucks at any program with aspirations.

Are we though? That is my question.

You can both be right. We will go home with nothing, jerkoff and do it all over again tomorrow night!

One night, we will go home at 2 with a 10, only to wake at 10 with a 2!

    Time is a flat circle!

I have one who I am not naming but he isn't on any of the "lists". Young guy who has a lot of good rep. Not sure if he is ready for big leagues yet.  I could also see a sleazeball hire like Petrino (if you remember Auburn sprung him on the college football world in 2002).

I will say, he has been a much better game manager this year than I expected. At the very least, he hasn't killed y'all with turnovers. That has made a lot of difference.

LSU's offense was a total shitshow against y'all. Your defense is good, but the QB who played most of the game for them couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. They were much better against Florida with Max Johnson playing the whole game, even without their best WRs.

Imagine what the SEC West would look like if the 2014 title game had turned out different. No way Aggy has the support to hire Jimbo without a championship and I don't think they could have money whipped any other coach with a championship. Maybe Stoops would have succumb to the 7.5/year to go to college station.

    Hah, sucks to suck

Sounds like an upstanding gentleman(fun parts in bold):

Robert E. Lowder (born ca. 1944 in Alabama) is a former American banking executive, and founder and former longtime CEO of the failed Colonial Bank and Colonial BancGroup, Colonial Bank's former parent company. Lowder is an Auburn University alumnus, graduating with a B.S. in Finance in 1964. He is also a former long-serving trustee of Auburn.[1] The Lowder Business Building on Auburn's campus is sometimes thought to be named after him, but according to the AU website, the building is named for his parents, Edward L. and Catherine K. Lowder.[2]

    Banking career[edit]

Lowder was Chairman of the Board and CEO of Colonial BancGroup, positions he held for 25 years. In 2006, his total compensation was $2.77 million and his five-year compensation total was $11.23 million, making him one of the 50 most highly compensated banking executives in the United States at that time.[3] He retired from Colonial Bank on May 28, 2009, but remained on the Board of Trustees at Auburn University.

Colonial BancGroup was reported to be under Federal investigation for possible criminal activities of its financial dealings in its mortgage subsidiary in August, 2009,[4] and on August 14, 2009, Colonial Bank was shut down by banking regulators, with its deposits and branches purchased by BB&T.[5]

    Auburn University Board of Trustees[edit]

Lowder began serving on the Auburn University Board of Trustees in 1983. In 2001, the Board of Trustees at Auburn summarily dismissed President William Muse, inspiring anger and votes of no confidence in Board members. The widespread belief on campus was that Lowder exerted tight private control over the Board, and thus over the ostensibly public university, using his clout to place some of his close friends in positions of power.[6]

Lowder has long been regarded as one of the nation's most powerful college boosters and power-behind-the-scenes trustees at Auburn.[7][8] In 2003, when then-University President William F. Walker and athletic director David Housel secretly spoke with University of Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino about taking over Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville's job, it was Lowder's private jet which they flew to Louisville.[9]

In the Spring of 2011, Alabama Governor Robert J. Bentley was the decisive vote on the five member nominating committee, which chose to re-appoint Lowder for another twelve-year term on the Board. Some claims suggest the Governor voted in favor of Lowder due to his wife's donation of $25,000 to the Bentley campaign on September 21, 2010.[10] Following this vote, a former alumni association president, Andy Hornsby, filed a civil lawsuit in Lee County Circuit Court, claiming that the appointment violated the state's Open Meetings Act.[11] Just a few days later, on May 16, 2011, Lowder contacted the Governor's Office asking his name be withdrawn from consideration for reappointment.

Lowder's tenure on the Auburn University Board of Trustees ended on April 10, 2012, when the Alabama state senate voted to replace five of the fourteen members. Lowder's successor on the board, M. Clark Sahlie, was elected to a seven-year term.[12]

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
