  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

I can totally see a Herman team beating Arkansas on the road. And then losing to the shittiest TCU team he's faced.

I cannot, under any circumstances, see a Herman team score 70 on Tech or anybody. Not that it matters, at all.

A Herman team scored 69 in the last regular season game last year, but it’s impossible for you to even imagine a scenario where it could have been 70?

Some shifty ass program might hire that prick again and he will suck again. But I kind of doubt he will get the chance, because he sucks at every element of coaching. He can't recruit. He cries on the sidelines when the chips are down. He acts like a monkey when the other team is beat (see, Missouri bowl game). How this clown fooled us into hiring and extending him is a top shelf argument against the existence of boosters. Any football mind would have told us to clear away. Unless that mind was bought and paid for by the same idiots who brought you Jumbo Tron and made you like it.

I tend to think Herman is a functional alcoholic or other addict.  Seemed like a lot of his personality "quirks" line up pretty well.

He might get sober and turn into a pretty decent coach some day.

since this thread is about firing coaches do we take credit for the firings at Tech and TCU?  Normally losing to us wouldn't be a big deal (and should be expected when the universe is functioning properly)  but we suck today

I don't follow the recruiting threads that closely, but there were rumors that Sarkisian thought he was in deep shit with this roster?

I vividly remember the $9.95 line in camp bring that the staff was pleasantly surprised at the overall talent level, and I remember laughing out loud when that culminated with “privately, this staff thinks they could make a playoff run,” or something very similar to that. I mean, I thought this was a nine win team so I’m not sitting here saying I expected this, but I don’t remember anything along the lines of what you’re saying.

    Brutal facts

From Burnt Orange Nation   Wescott Eberts

The slide for the Texas Longhorns continued in Ames on Saturday night with a 30-7 loss to the Iowa State Cyclones that featured another second-half meltdown as the home team scored 27 unanswered points after Texas took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Iowa State beat Texas for a third-consecutive time, sending the Longhorns to the program’s fourth-consecutive defeat for the first time since 2010. The only Power Five wins for Texas this season have come against programs that subsequently fired their head coaches.

The four-consecutive blown halftime leads are the most in the FBS in the last 15 seasons — the issues for first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian are historic after Texas fired Tom Herman following a 7-3 campaign and a tenure that never featured the type of defeats that have happened multiple times this season.

Herman never lost as badly as Texas lost to Arkansas. Herman never lost as badly as Texas lost to Iowa State. Herman never blew a 21-point lead like Texas did against Oklahoma. Herman never blew an 14-point lead like Texas did against Oklahoma State. Herman never blew an 11-point lead like Texas did against Baylor.

Dude we have a lot of the same players as last year and all of them except Bijan look worse under Sark. Casey Thompson's straight up looked BETTER than Sam when he came in during the second half of the bowl game last season. Now he looks like trash and I'm not even sure we make a bowl game this season. We fired Herman after a 3 loss season because we thought we should be blowing everyone out.  Now that Herman's gone, it's unfair to expect the new guy to not GET blown out every other game while having basically the same roster. Without COVID canceling cupcakes Herman would have gone 10-3 last year.

It was the same thing with Strong. Strong gets here and all a sudden the cupboard is empty and seemingly unfillable. No guys getting drafted, team getting blown out regularly etc.. Then Herman comes along and WOW we have a few standouts, and the team isnt getting run off the field anymore. We weren't lighting the world on fire but we could compete. Herman leaves and oh no! We suck again!

No, the team is vastly different. Your post is heavy on emotion and little analysis. I’ll wait until Sark gets his players in place to judge him. All this bitching and moaning is just another example of why we have the worst fan base in cfb. Bunch of absolute morons.

Agreed. Last years team had NFL players at QB, LT, DL x 2, and safety. This years team struggles at QB play, OL play, pass rush, and on the backend of the defense….and some people think that’s a coincidence.

You’re right, it was helped by an NFL OL and rush end. We’re probably a 2 loss team with a LT, elite pass rusher and QB who can complete passes against actual competition.

It does raise an interesting question about what a coach should do with that information.  Say it out loud to manage expectations and queer an already fragile bunch?   Keep it on the qt and maybe manage expectations with CDC?  Just keep it to yourself mostly?

Someone raised Schnellenberger at OU for one year.  I looked back at wiki and upon arrival, he pronounced them "out of shape, unorganized and unmotivated" and apparently set a fine tone for his one season.

He for sure did, he just happened to win with a FG.
Herman didn't lead a lot of times against the teams above.

Well the good news is that the halftime leads are getting smaller each game so it shouldn't be long before we can stop the trend of losing after leading at the half. Of course that will be because we won't lead at fucking all, but small victories. Amirite?

Counterpoint: but TH was quirky and emotional. We are so much better off with a guy who looks like he is completely lost. But hey we have guys in positions to succeed but the defense doesn’t bother because they know we can’t execute.

If he did think that, there's no way CDC would have been cool with him coming out and saying it. Texas football's primary goal is to make money - butts in seats, eyeballs on TV. Your own coach saying "lol y'all might not like what you're about to see" doesn't accomplish that.

If you take a look at the 2018 class and the 2019 class that are still at Texas you will see this story being written before your eyes. This is what you call the "clean up on aisle 6".  Sark is not a good head coach.  I'm guessing we'll look a lot like his Washinton gig except he took over a much worse team there.  He can OC you to some wins but he's gonna get outcoached a shit ton.

I bumped this thread because it was the first thread in January of this year where posters discussed their initial reaction to Sark's hiring.  It was 90% negative, and it's clear the crowd was correct.  This was a bad hire.  Herman needed to go, sooner rather than later, but replacing him with a guy who's already revealed his type as someone that is not a very good HC was a terrible decision.

In retrospect, I perhaps should have just created a new thread, but I was leery of such because the thread police here hate new threads for some reason - everything just gets buried in 100 page threads that are 4 years old.  Predictably, this has now devolved into Sark vs Herman, which was not my intent and seems silly. Nevertheless, Sark<Herman<dogshit.

Username checks out. I was never under the impression that this team was going to be a world beater, but I expected a decent win total because of the schedule. Arkansas and Baylor are better than expected, TCU and ISU are worse. Everyone else is at about the level that was expected, and no one outside of OU is even in the discussion as nationally elite.

It remains true that the schedule for the most part is filled with pedestrian opponents that this Texas team can/should be able to beat. Texas straight up controlled large portions of the OU, OSU, and Baylor games. 90+ percent win probability against both the Oklahoma schools and 80 percent against Baylor. This was not some lifeless shell of a team that can't compete. Or at least, it wasn't when it was motivated. It's clear that the wheels have fallen off now and that's exactly what it is, but to say that's the version of the team that should be expected is both as reactionary of a take as any "emotional pussy" (you are so alpha and I hope to be big and strong like you one day, by the way) could come up with, and setting a comically low bar for the coaching staff.

They controlled halves lol. The other team controls the second half when our few good players get tired and the scheme starts to break down. That’s not a large portion. We are a pedestrian team, the way you talk is what people say about us now. Vegas gave us 7 wins, we can still win 7 games. We are a middle tier big 12 team now and we play like it. Have we been picked to win any of these games that you think we should win, just out of curiosity?

i like the upside of sark better than I do herman.  but until I actually see some W's, that doesnt matter.  ive seen the flashes of what I want from a sark led team (see first half of OU game), but until he figures out how to put that together for an entire game, for an entire season, we have made a lateral move at best.

Herman went 7-6 in his first year with a roster stocked with people who have made money in the NFL. Against a similar strength of schedule.

Herman and Sark may both suck, but this roster is a far cry from that 2017 roster.

Herman lost by 21 to Baylor in year 3 (he scored a garbage time TD with 7 seconds remaining to make it 24-10). Similar last minute scores against LSU and OU kept those scores closer than it was at the end. Lost by 10 to a 5-7 TCU team that year too.

Herman in year 4 with a senior Ehlinger was getting blown out 31-17 by a reeling OU team that was flipflopping QBs and had a shitty pac-12 DC (hi dcar00). Sam hero ball scored 14 pts in the final 4 minutes to push it to overtime. Tech had us down 15 before Sam went nuts to score 15 in less than 3 minutes to take it to OT, then won the game.

There's no Sam this to bail the team out this year. We've also lost plenty of other key contributors. Could Sark and Co. be doing better? I think so, but this shit wouldn't look any better with Herman unless he was able to bring in multiple key transfers.

I thought they'd be a 3rd place in the Big 12, back end of the top 25 type team. Nothing spectacular but enough to win most games outside of OU. In that sense I was wrong and I freely admitted that. Picked to win? In what sense? What's even the point of that? Texas was favored to win against Oklahoma State. The spread against Baylor was like two points on the road, implying Texas would be favored at a neutral site. Analytics like S&P and FPI picked Texas in these games. Thinking Texas can win these is not some hot take out of left field. And again, regardless of who the favorite was going in, when you find yourself with a double digit second half lead, victory is a reasonable expectation.

A half is a lot of game time to control. Texas had double digit second half leads in all of these games. Winning is hard, blowing double digit second half leads is even harder.

    Based on what? We're Texas?

We have no QB and no OL. Bijan is apparently fumbling the ball now (haven't watched the game yet). Recruiting rankings don't mean shit for this team. An even deeper dive than I've done would be even more sobering than it already is.

Take the rest of the year to enjoy your Saturdays, and hope we land lots of OL/DL transfers and edge rushers. PK likely needs to go as well unless we can somehow find some reliable LBs and Safeties. Not sure a focus on the DL would make a huge difference either, but maybe.

As Texas fans we literally have memories of VY and Colt being down multiple TD’s against these very teams and coming back to win. Now adjust your rose tinted glasses and realize that we are on the end of those heart breaking losses. We aren’t that version of Texas anymore, losing 4 games in a row happens to a shit load of programs across college football. It just never happens to Texas lol. Our fan base is struggling with the concept that we are closer to a shitty version of Michigan than we are to Alabama now. In 2005 we were down 28-12 with the best Texas team we have ever assembled. Vince had to rush for 267 yards to win. In 07 we went into the third quarter against ok state down 35-7 and scored 24 unanswered to win. The shit we are going through happens to other programs lol. We are just lucky

If you can't form an opinion about Sark as HC after 8 years, highlighted here by the very dark downward spiral we've entered the last month or so, I don't know what to tell you.  Has our talent just tanked significantly in the past 4 games? His team has quit on him. Probably rightfully so.  Teams don't quit on great HC's - that's why they are great.  He's an OC who's been repeatedly Peter-principled up to HC. To think he can just "recruit" his way out of it is hopelessly naive.

How do you think teams become good in the first place? These magical great coaches that can magically win no matter who is lining up for them?

    Hopelessly naive.

I thought that perhaps since you were the single most consistently wrong-headed water-carrying poster on the PK thread, you might have perhaps taken that as a sign you should recalibrate your bad takes regarding this coaching staff. Nope. Doubling down I see.

This off-season will make or break Sark. Maybe I’m wrong but he doesn’t seem like the sense of urgency type of head coach like Beard. That laid-back Cali attitude will not work in the SEC. We’ll see what he does this off-season with the portal. Not optimistic at this point.

I mean I outlined this above, but based on the fact that most of the schedule is not particularly good. That remains the case. Nearly everyone Texas has played is flawed enough to have found themselves looking up at the scoreboard down double digits in the second half. To be 4-5 when that's the case is a pretty damning indictment of the coaching staff, regardless of anyone's preseason expectation.

I didn't watch the Baylor game and caught bits and pieces of the ISU game. Stopped switching back to it pretty early in the second half once it was obvious it was over. I've been at the "do better things with Saturdays - or at least watch more compelling games" stage since the OSU game went final.

Lol what are you even talking about now? It's not 2012. Everyone is well aware that Texas is not an elite team. You've gone way beyond the original scope of what I said here.

You keep saying you thought Texas was a 9 win team, good for 3rd in the big 12. That’s a bad take. 7 wins, that’s what everybody rationale thought of this Texas team. I used what we use to do to people as a way to show you that we are the “pedestrian” big 12 team now that can’t finish games. It is what it is. 7 or 8 wins and sark did exactly what people thought he would do with this roster.

I find the Beard comparisons to be invidious.  Basketball has a roster of what 15 players, only 5 of whom are playing at any given time and 10-12 of whom see any playing time at all in a game, or season?

"Cleaning house" and replacing deadwood is a lot easier.

Plus, there's more parity in basketball that makes portal talent more plentiful.

Just a whole host of reasons that it's a bad comparison.

With the fullness of hindsight, it was pretty absurd to predict any better result this year than last, with the talent loss.  Hope springs eternal.

I didn't buy Scipio's book this year, but he's usually pretty clear-eyed about the roster and the potential for deployment in a coach's schemes. Maybe I can go buy it still.  Was he predicting doom?

I thought that perhaps since you were the single most consistently wrong-headed water-carrying poster on the PK thread, you might have perhaps taken that as a sign you should recalibrate your bad takes regarding this coaching staff. Nope. Doubling down I see.

Being negative without context is useless. Texas is a bad school for football and is rapidly heading toward ruin. Even as a fanbase, this group is always ready to say things suck when things aren't going well. Much of that is merited this year, but I'm more interested in understanding why. That comes across as being an apologist because it isn't nearly as blindly negative as the masses, but a lot of solid, up and coming coaches seem to become shitty once they come here.

That's bullshit. Everyone on this board was drinking the cool aide to at least 8 wins, usually 9 and often 10.

I said rationale people. This board is far from that bud. IQ is lacking too lol

What gives you hope that we can win 3 more games?

Lol.  Baylor is a better football team than we are. Period. Ok state and Oklahoma have beaten us regularly for years so those aren’t surprising. I’m just not as shocked as you are that we suck man. Kansas is beatable, Kansas state has been struggling much like tcu of late, and West Virginia is a mess. It’s very possible in Morgantown we shit the bed but I’ll stay as optimistic as I can until the very end. In the event we never turn it around and become Stanford, well at least we kept our souls. It is what it is.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
