  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

Fuck it.  I'm not enthused but at least its different

This is where I am too. At least there is a change. I'm tired of losing too many close games that shouldn't have been close. We'll see what happens now.

Feels like when an NFL team hires a shitty Belichick assistant. Sarkisian had success at Bama because he was at Bama. He hasn’t had much success anywhere else.

Sometimes you end up with Brian Flores

Fuck it. I'm gonna choose to be optimistic until his results at Texas insist that I go the other way.

Portal is a game changer. NIL is a game changer. It's a new day.

Looking at former players twitter it doesn't seem there's a lot of love lost for Tom.  Many current players are in shock though.

But they'll all be tuned in on 1/11 to see what their next head coach is capable of.

Sarkisian was being groomed as the replacement for Saban. That’s a positive sign. It also sounds like Bryce Young might be going wherever Sarkisian goes. So the QB competition might get interesting this Spring.

    Failure in Atlanta
    Mediocre at Washington
    Flameout at USC
    Successful at Bama.

There's too much focus on the Sark news to really appreciate the fact that we'll never have to hear another "winning is hard" or see another pee chart.  Mensa is gone.  Let us rejoice.

Hopefully working under fucking Saban without falling off helps our odds he can handle it.

Being promoted from the lower ranks to OC by Saban is a pretty impressive qualification really.

Given Saban's documented control issues, it's hard to believe he would have made the promotion if a) Sarkisian hadn't shown progress with his addiction and b) without some form of controls to insure that a) wasn't some fluke or bullshit.

I was a charter member of the Urban Meyer or bust group.  I'm very underwhelmed and a heavy lean to bust at this point.  I was trying to get up for Kelly or someone else and I still came back to the only guarantee out there is Meyer.  Sark is too much like Herman.  He hasn't won anything as a HC and there may be reasons why he didn't succeed that make sense, but the fact is, he went backward to OC after failing twice as HC.  He may be in recovery but look, that's not what I want at Texas for a HC.  He's got a closet full of skeletons and I will not be surprised if he has a lackluster stint here.

That said, everyone deserves a fair shot.  I'm not buying season tickets anytime soon but I'll casually watch and if he gives us reason to participate, we'll participate.  I'm done being a fanatic for shit product.  you want me and my teenage sons to be all in, win.

Well there's David McWilliams and John Mackovic.  He's not necessarily going to be as bad as Charlie Strong.  But there's no reason to think he will be as successful as Fred Akers, Mack Brown or Tom Hermann.  Absolutely no reason.

This is the answer.  This is absolutely David McWilliams 2.0.  If memory serves, the difference between then and now is that David was hired based on DKR's recommendation and nobody else had a vote.  David was much younger in his head coaching career also, having been a career assistant.  Sark has had two or three attempts at being a head coach.  The only reason he may not crash and burn is his offensive philosophy/recruiting ability.

Texas triples down on “potential” over “proven” after Strong and Herman experiments failed.  Perhaps they had no choice with bridges burned internally and hard No’s from higher hanging fruit, but from where I’m sitting this feels like a likely lateral move while hoping what you throw at the proverbial wall finally sticks.  Definitely not sexy or game-changing on day of the hire.  Will be up to Sark to create the sexy or we’ll be having the same ole conversation 3 or 4 years from now.

Who's the proven HC from a power 5 school we were going to poach?

    Fuck Herman

    Fuck Sark

    Fuck you BMD

He didn't 'fail' in ATL - he just wasn't as good as his predecessor K. Shanahan.

I'd say, considering where UW was when he was hired, he was successful there.

Definitely flamed out at USC - though going 9-4 when you were completely blitzed most of the time is impressive in its own sort of way.

Sarkisian did not fail twice as a head coach. I understand people not being keen on the hire but you do not have to invent facts because you are upset.

    I've seen this movie before.

    Go after Saban/Urban- "No thanks"

    settle on charlie/sarkisian

No one will ever be able to convince me fucking SARK was the next guy we wanted after Urban said No. Makes me wonder how many others said no before we got to this shit.

Now that I think of it, are the BMD just Texas's Jerry Joneses?????????????????????

And I am okay with that because what has been going on for a decade is not good enough.

Is he really? Seeing how Alabama has adapted should give hope.

Alabama has more talent and more depth than anyone in the country.  Only Clemson, Ohio St. and Georgia are even close.

Herman was successful at Houston then.  same difference.  unproven.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
