  • Surly Horns Burnt Ends NIL Program- How YOU can help Texas with the NIL right now!

    RGBIII

Enough bitching, enough sitting on the sidelines, CDC isn't doing fucking dick but we can! Introducing Surly Horns Burnt Ends NIL Program. This is how we make a difference, if we can get enough interest and hit the numbers that we forecasted, that is a huge step towards getting at least one position group taken care of (possibly two pending interest and people actually putting their money where their mouths are) with the hopes that others will follow with other less appreciated position groups. Bijan, Card, even guys like Jamison and Overshown won't have issues getting paid when the NIL is fully rolled out (hopefully fucking soon, looking at you @closetojumping)or when CDC gets his head pulled out of his ass (Doubtful, fucking moron).

Next Steps, I gauge interest through this article and see what the financials actually look like (You won't be charged dick till this shit actually gets rolled out), we get a liaison in the TE room to help facilitate scheduling, we get this bitch through compliance (Don't think this should be an issue but....), then we start to roll it out to the TEs! All the profit is going directly to the TEs, and the website will be handling the money (No Ketch bullshit). We will mail everyone's Cups and stickers and shit once things have been rolling. We will need some help designing a logo (paging @TreatyOak). This is a great opportunity for us to have some fun with the NIL, get some kids some cash legally and above board, help improve TE recruiting and keep talented TEs on the team and out of the portal. If you have any suggestions, questions or grievances shoot me and @immamac a DM. This is how we help!

You guys know jack shit about how these contracts work so it's funny when you try and tell me, the guy who actually has an active one, how they do.

    NIL contract question.

let's say Liebrock gets hurt and medically retires in October - his contract is through the end of the year so he gets paid

if Helm gets sick and portals back to Colorado is he still paid through the end of the year or is it contingent on him being an enrolled at Texas?

if Wiley does amazing and is a guaranteed first rounder next year and goes pro + withdraws from school in January to work on his NFL draft stock is he still paid through graduation basically?

just trying to understand the contracts a little better?

without giving people a public roadmap of solving these issues, these are all questions that compliance asked us and are answered and accounted for in the contract.

To be clear, the only way you can do an NIL deal with a player is not tying that player to the university, that implies that you aren't paying the player for their NIL, but you are paying for their association with the university.

The Texas law is pretty explicit about pay for performance, but the Ohio, Louisiana and some others aren't really clear on that. I'm not sure that any school's compliance would approve these contracts, every state law I have read, outside of autographs which require no contract, need to be approved by the University. I'm pretty sure a University wouldn't let a contract through that was explicitly performance based, and the Ohio law talks about things in uniform or official duties not being able to be part of the NIL thing.

I feel like lawyers could have a field day with the "Image" portion as it pertains to these two stipulations. Pretending for a moment that there is an actual valuation or ROI to the business, especially for a local business, that valuation/ROI is 100% tied to the athlete's association to a university and their performance on the field. A player with all the looks, charisma, and Twitter followers in the world does fuckall for Amy's Ice Cream if that player is a scrub at [insert other school] (hell, might even hit sales negatively if they're at OU, tOSU, etc.)...however, they could market the fuck out of an endorsement by some butt-ugly dude with no social media and the personality of a ham sandwich if that dude just so happened to be a Heisman contender at UT (thankfully we have Bijan /nohomo). NCAA and state politicians really couldn't have handled this any worse.

Interesting that bannation is in the discussion to add to BE’s pot. I’m under the impression that buying in to BE also helps avoid the ramifications of crowd sourcing.

I don’t know that it’s actually in the table. Just saying if it was in limited sense and everyone is throwing in I would too.

Straight from the horse’s mouth at the university, the state NIL laws prohibiting players from associating their NIL stuff to the school are fucking us. Hopefully this gets resolved soon.

@immamac & @RGBIII are fucking awesome for putting this together. The only potential hiccup I see is if for some reason the Horns carry 9 or 10 TEs on the roster. But I guess it’s just as likely the could carry 6 or 7.  Perhaps it would just average out over the 3-5 years a TE would be with the team. And perhaps the more established this thing gets there could be additional supporters other than the current projection.

Based on the act I can see how you thought that was a TE, but given the setting I’m fairly certain that wasn’t the case.

FYI, for those excited about the Burnt Ends program and concerned that Texas needs to be doing more around NIL, there is an effort by several folks from Surly and elsewhere, (including Immamac, CTJ, myself, SydneyCarton, TreatyOak, Squishmitten, and RGBIII), to create a new company that fills the current holes in the Texas NIL plans. I post this here in addition to the NIL thread, which is members only.

To move this forward, we need some crucial volunteer work for the next several months until a permanent funding plan for this company is put in place. Specific help we need is the following:

IT/software development - a person or two who can help assemble a web site (using whatever third party products are required) that will enable a company resource to post content about Texas NIL projects the company is addressing and take payments for membership and NIL deals from Texas fans and community. OVer time we would continue to enhance this online presence into a full-blown online presence.  The newco would eventually hire 1-3 people to work on new things all the time.  We can't move the business forward without these resources so if you know someone who cares about Texas NIL and wants to be involved with something really cool, please DM me.

Graphics and Marketing - a person or two that can create graphics and help with the NIL marketing programs we put in place. Again, there would eventually be a full-time position for this.

Player Engagement - a person that knows players in various UT sports and can handle outreach and interfaction with them.  Again, this would eventually be a full-time position.

DM me if you know anyone interested. the IT/SW are crucial steps for now.

So basically all you need is a blog + online store for now? You can probably get away with something like Squarespace or it's ilk for now, which one of y'all who isn't a IT person could probably create. Long term you will probably want to find a way to accept ACH debits to avoid all these credit card fees. It looks like Stripe let's you accept debits for subscriptions only right now which is something at least.

Hey y'all, hope that it's ok to post this here

My main account is a surly 10% member (with no CR rep inflation!) and burnt ends member but I wanted to have a level of separation for this

I've been working on an NIL project of my own and we just launched this morning: niftyhorns.com

I've spoilered a longer explanation but the tl;dr is that we're creating digital trading cards for Texas athletes. We'll be starting small but eventually it'd be great to include as many student athletes as possible. And our pack structure is going to allow for everyone to make money, from the stars to the walk-ons to non-revenue athletes

    Appreciate y'all checking it out

      Hide contents

    Hey, y'all!

With the football season kicking off tomorrow, both /u/Ndrul and I wanted to finally unveil the NIL concept that we have been working on and teasing for the past several weeks.

    NIFTY HORNS

In short, Nifty Horns is an NFT mint and storefront designed to support student-athletes at the University of Texas by way of the sale and resale of digital trading cards now that the NCAA has allowed for players to profit off their name, image, and likeness.

Hold on. What's an NFT exactly?

Well, I'm glad you asked. "NFT" is an acronym standing for "non-fungible token". NFTs (AKA "nifties") are digital assets minted and traded on the blockchain. The blockchain ensures that every asset purchased and traded is backed with unalterable metadata to verify that every NFT you own is authentic and truly yours.

In the case of Nifty Horns, these digital assets will come in the form of digital trading cards similar to the "trading cards" the Fire Steve Sarkisian Podcast (née Fire Tom Herman Podcast) used for commitment announcements during the 2021 Texas football recruiting class.

You said the cards would be similar to that one you linked. What do they actually look like?

Our asset lineup will be constantly evolving and iterating, so these designs are by no means final, however our initial packs will be made up of cards using this template which currently features the members of our Nifty Horns development team. You may also note that these have different backgrounds for each one. Among others, these are good examples of different rarity tiers that can be collected for each card and player.

Fun Fact: /u/Ndrul would not let me use a much more amusing picture of him in college for his card advertising on behalf of Costco's Kirkland brands. Buzzkill.

How do I know this blockchain thing will work?

Nifty Horns is built on Dapper Labs' Flow blockchain, the technology that supports and maintain's the NBA's wildly popular Top Shot NFT program. By building on the same technology, we can be certain Nifty Horns will be reliable and secure.

By the way, the NBA Top Shot NFT program generated more than $700 million last year. We know we aren't gonna sell that many NFTs (probably), but it's still an exciting space to be a part of.

So how do the players get paid through all of this?

There are three ways that players will earn money through Nifty Horns. The first way the players get paid is with an upfront payment from Nifty Horns to secure rights to their NIL in order to create the card(s). The second way will be through the revenue generated by initial pack sales. The final way is only made possible thanks to blockchain technology, and that is through royalties generated by cards being resold. Because the blockchain is able to track all assets and all sales of those same assets, creators of NFTs can receive royalties via third-party sales of those assets. Players can directly benefit from these resale royalties. Our hope is that our product will be enticing enough that a robust collection and resale community arises to keep money flowing to the players throughout their playing careers at the University of Texas.

    Which student-athletes are participating?

We're not quite ready to share that information yet, but we will be unveiling that roster in the weeks ahead. Our primary focus this fall is football players, but we hope to grow to many (if not all) other sports at Texas in the coming months.

    Great. When do you launch?

Our current target for the first pack launch will be the week of the Red River Shootout on October 9th.

What can I do to keep in touch with Nifty Horns?

You can visit our website to learn more about the Nifty Horns team, our mission, and our release timeline.

You can follow us on Twitter at @NiftyHorns.

You can join our community Discord to communicate directly with the Nifty Horns team and get involved with future projects.

You can join our mailing list for updates from the Nifty Horns team about our full launch later this fall.

If you have any other questions, feel free to say hi and talk to us about our plans at the /r/LonghornNation tailgate tomorrow! Thanks for reading! We can't wait to share more with you in the very near future!

    Hook 'em!

This sounds awesome!  I’m mainly infatuated with two things in my spare time: football and crypto.  I’ll be buying these packs when they come out!

That's part of what I've been trying to work out, what to use and the timing of rolling out stuff.  I've thought of everything from Shopify or Squarespace, to community software to just putting together some sort of wordpress site.  I think what will be key is to talk through options with knowledgeable folks and pick a path to start.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
