  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

It's weird. Especially because despite his shortcomings he's still better than plenty of D1 HCs. Probably waiting for a decent job to open up.

He will fail even harder the next time.

He does not have the makings of a big-time D1 coach. Or even a small-time D1 coach. The dude has major, major personality flaws.

Do we remember anything coachlike from his tenure? Mack had a few moments behind the podium. There are whole books of Coach Royal's wit and wisdom. Even Charlie had his moment, warning us about Twitter.

With Herman, it's just him acting like a 15-year-old punk, mocking that asshole Mizzu QB and flipping off the camera on LHN. What other coach has done shit like that? Allowing that film of him trying and failing to smash that locker is another failure. His IQ might scrape above 140 but functionally he was highly regarded. One of my aunts is almost 70 and has the mind of an eight-year-old and she would know better than to do some of the shit he did.

The dude is special. Yeah he might be in MENSA. That does not disqualify you from being "special."

If he’s smart he goes someplace loaded and has a 2–3 year run as OC before getting another HC gig.

It’s funny that we get this rep as a cesspool that runs off quality coaches due to unrealistic expectations and impatience, yet there never seems to be a line of schools waiting to hire our castoffs. And the ones who do land new gigs are nothing short of disasters at their next job.

Absolutely, Tommy boy is 100% stupid enough to pay to be in a "smart people club" scam.

Tom Herman is Peggy Hill in that episode where she gets her PhD in an afternoon from that online scam, only Tom didn't get the win at the end with a convoluted scheme.

Just imagine if those three games aren't canceled thanks to Covid.  We almost certainly win all three which results in a 10-3 season.  We moving on at that point?  Don't think so.

You could never pencil in a W with Terrapin Tom, with us or at UH. But even if we won two of those, yeah, we probably don't move on. Who says Covid has been all bad?

None of that stuff matters, shows he is human. What mattered was his choice in initial coaching staffs, and, if true, is lack of connection with players, coaches, staff, and alumni. 2019 was one of the worst coaching jobs a coach has had herr, up with Strong, 1997, 2010.

Is that a different episode than the one where we learn Peggy is a MENSA member and actually goes to a MENSA convention? Funny you bring her up because I always associate Peggy Hill w/ MENSA.

I'm 10/10 glad that Tom is gone, I hated the stubbornness, arrogance and immaturity he demonstrated multiple times during his tenure.

However, I was happy when he got here and was pretty sure just about anyone could do a better job of pointing us in the right direction than Charlie. He did leave us in better shape than Charlie. That and having an A.D. and President pulling together has me hopeful/ optimistic.

I don't hold any ill will toward Charlie or Tom, but I'm overjoyed that they are gone.

Tom Herman is not a good enough football coach, either, and he's also an insufferably arrogant douchebag whose vagina lips flap in the wind like a pair of flags.  I wish him fatness and baldness.

This. Strong was likeable. He was in over his head, but he was a nice guy and good dude.

Tom was a dick, and regardless of his coaching ability he was always going to be a dick. So fuck that guy.

So glad that Sark didn't turtle after taking a big lead at halftime. He kept his foot on Tech's neck and kept stomping! Viva Sark!
    FUCK YOU TOM!!
In the second half, I was definitely thinking it's a good thing sark actually means it when he says we won't let up on offense.

Everything about the tech game followed a Tom Herman script except that we didn't turtle up when we got up a couple of touchdowns.

Little doubt in my mind that if Herman had coached that game we would've ended up tied 35-35 in the 4th with tech having all the momentum from their comeback and us hoping that Dicker could save us with 48 yd attempt as time expired.

IMO the best thing Herman did was make us realize how truly shitty Strong was.

Also, at least he didn’t leave the cupboard completely bare. He had some good talent, we can’t deny. But he exposed himself by not knowing how to deploy it to take advantage of it. Hence the change. I’m just glad we didn’t uh, extend his ass stubbornly like other desperate programs have been know to do.

If you think about our top impact skill players on offense over the last few games, at least half of them wouldn't be on the team if Herman was still the coach (Worthy, K Robinson), and the other half would probably be injured from poor s&c (jwhit) or only touching the ball 6-7 times/game in order to "bring him along slowly."

Pretty scary to imagine Bijan still running second as a change of pace back to Ingram and Kai Money leading the team in receptions because Omeire, Smith, and Whittington would once again be sidelined with no other options at receiver.

I honestly have no idea if Strong is a nice guy and a good dude.  Herman is clearly a dick.  Strong, no idea.  If the rumors he tried to play the race card on his termination are true, fuck him.  Not sure about the rumors on him banging a booster's wife.  I don't care for married men fucking around.  I also don't like that he pretty egregiously structured his contract with USF to fuck us over.  Had we wanted to litigate that, we would have won.  He knew we wouldn't. He was such an abject failure as a head coach, I don't really give a fuck if he is a nice guy.  Because I felt like shit watching his product on the field.

eh I just think those were more symptoms of the same personality flaws: insecurity, narcissism, overconfidence....he totally operated from a place of fear of failure rather than a belief in success.

Yeah I’m calling BS on Charlie. He ran to USF and together the sent a fuck you to Texas with that contract. He and USF can go fuck themselves as they both thought they could pull one over on Texas.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
