  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

Did he, tho? We don’t know, and I doubt we ever will.

Strong was named as “the other man” in a divorce trial between Louisville boosters. He then slept in another room for months after having to disclose that to his wife and give a deposition. Some of that can be looked up, obviously the rest I’m passing on from folks who worked with him daily. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy, just pointing out that some of the facts around the extramarital affair were public.

I’m in the camp that doesn’t give a shit if the HC is a nice guy or a “good man”.  Give me wins on the field and don’t embarrass the program. Otherwise, go home and play with your kids. Charlie Strong’s incompetence made UT fan life miserable, and I don’t know the guy, so fuck him but I’m not wishing for bad things to happen to him that aren’t football-related. I will laugh my ass off when bad football shit happens to that dumbass though.

Tom Herman went out of his way to hurt people and lord power over them at Texas. He hired and held onto Casey fucking Horny. He sucked generally. I actually do cheer against that guy beyond the game, as unapologetically petty as that may be.

That all said, if we’re trapped in college football hell and the devil tells us we have to live through four more years of one of these guys as HC, who are you taking? I’m taking Tom Herman on a bullet, personally.

I'm 10/10 glad that Tom is gone, I hated the stubbornness, arrogance and immaturity he demonstrated multiple times during his tenure.

However, I was happy when he got here and was pretty sure just about anyone could do a better job of pointing us in the right direction than Charlie. He did leave us in better shape than Charlie. That and having an A.D. and President pulling together has me hopeful/ optimistic.

I don't hold any ill will toward Charlie or Tom, but I'm overjoyed that they are gone.

Sounds like a healthy attitude.  Clearly some people can't manage to move on.  Jfc.

Are you fuckers serious? That prick left Sark with one actual football player and a 80 JAGs. Jesus Christ, just when you think you've seen it all. Though I would like y'all to have seen Herman try to coach without a good-to-great QB.

Yeah but how did Herman take these same guys and win 7 games last year? It wasn't just Sam.

Sam pulled some rabbits out of the hat last year. The last two games featured teams decimated by covid as well.
We also had ossai, cosmi, more we depth, rb depth was similar, and upgrades and just about every position defensively.

Even then, today snowballed more than it should have. We weren’t gonna win this game either way, bad matchups all over

We aren’t gonna win the recruiting beauty contest, but these guys need to bring in whatever they fuck they think they need to field a competitive squad next year.

If they can’t find quality outside of the obvious world beaters, then we’ll be talking about the next hire in about 3 years

You’re right, it was helped by an NFL OL and rush end. We’re probably a 2 loss team with a LT, elite pass rusher and QB who can complete passes against actual competition.

    A) It wasn't the same guys.

    B) It was just Sam.

And I could pose you a question -- maybe he would have been able to win more than 7 games if he'd played Bijan a little more.

As I said repeatedly long before we hired that prick, he had never won anything with his own recruits, his image as a great recruiter at UH was derived entirely from Ed Oliver's mama telling him he was gonna go play with his brother, and when he didn't have a healthy Greg Ward running the offense, he sucked ass. And also, that he revealed himself to be an asshole and a fraud and thin-skinned pussy to the Houston media on multiple occasions, but they just kind of shrugged it off because they don't like pissing off dumb UH fans and nobody else gives a shit about the program. The only time the city collectively cared about anything UH has ever done athletically was the Phi Slama Jama era, and even those teams didn't sell out Hofheinz regularly.

Longing for Herman is as dumb as those few dudes on here who long to bring back Mack. They remind me of those lone Japanese soldiers they found on remote islands in the 1970s who still thought the war was on.

Firing Sark is not the answer. Not this year or next or even the year after that, barring the elephant in the room, personality wise, and you know, I don't think you could fire him if he volunteered to go to treatment first, unless there is something in his contract specifying something like "if you eat one rum ball at an Xmas party, that is cause for termination with cause."

At some point we need to accept that we will have to settle on a coach who will bring this program back to Holiday Bowl status, and that might be when you make a move.

Meanwhile, we've pissed away two chances to hire Jeff Traylor. One I admit was not realistic, but it would been a very bold move to fire Charlie and everyone off his staff and offer Traylor then. Yes, pie in the sky, but isn't it true that we are supposed to be Texas, where what happens changes the world? That move would have challenged the entire paradigm of head coaching hires, but more importantly, would have brought a level of continuity to the locker room, and still more importantly, continued the positive steps Strong was bringing to our talent evaluation and recruiting.

And then we had another chance this year, but evidently being a mediocre head coach at multiple stops with a widely publicized risk factor personality-wise, and a quick turn as Saban right hand man, are better credentials than being the architect of an unlikely Texas HS dynasty who'd done nothing but prove himself in his brief career in the college ranks.

And now too many of our arrogant fans are comforting themselves with the thought that he will settle for some school like Tech, TCU, or SMU. He'll just wait for us to come calling, these people seem to think. Um, no. I would not be surprised if he doesn't end up at LSU (if they don't snatch Jimbo) or A&M (if they do.) And then we will be even more proper fucked than we are now.

Agree with this to a degree. This season would’ve looked a lot differently with Sam taking snaps. He had his faults but he’d have masked a lot of deficiencies and is clearly head and shoulders above either Card or Thompson

Mainly, he was the Samdozer.  Unafraid to run, on- or off-schedule, and pretty fucking good at it.  Neither Card nor Thompson have that ability or desire.

Passing-wise, he's kind of similar to Thompson, but seems to be a bit smarter about it with less fucked up mechanics to go with his middling arm.

When your OL sucks balls, having a QB threat is a third dimension to the offense that we currently completely lack.  We have about 1.5 dimensions:  Bijan/Roschon and Worthy.

Fuck Tom Herman, but I think he's probably a better HC than Squatty Sark. Who knows with recruiting, as we'll either see an exodus or they'll hang on. I think that kid from Alabama (Finkley) will stay. He seems to go to the beat of his own drum, much like Bijan.

With this line I don't know if he'd be able to even get out of the pocket and tuck and run.

And this is not the worst OL we've had. That would be the one Mack left Charlie that ended up with Marcus Wilkins a starting tackle.

I don’t know about you guys but I could not take another year of Herman.  His teams )except a small part of one year) were just excruciating to watch.   Let’s see if Sark can do anything in year 2 with a real QB and a DC who’s not a meathead.  Gotta get some linemen though.

The weirdest thing is that first-half OU has been about as good as  UT team has looked in forever.  Herman's teams never looked that good, even for a half.

And the dookystomping of Rice was something Herman could never pull off against the weak sisters on our schedule.

The Arkansas game didn't seem to break us, but OU did.  Or maybe it was a progressive destruction from OU to OSU to Baylor to ISU.  At least their fragile psyches got some boost from Rice, TTU and surviving TCU after Arkansas, but they couldn't handle two and then three losses in a row.

But, if you insist on talking about what last year's team did, you'd have to admit that the OU, OSU and ISU games were a crapshoot last year (and two losses and an OT win) and would have been this year under Herman, assuming the same trajectory.

I assume that this would be an even bigger shitshow with Herman wearing his own "talent."  Maybe better on D, because PK seems to be a disaster.

    It's so fucking bizarre.

Dude we have a lot of the same players as last year and all of them except Bijan look worse under Sark. Casey Thompson's straight up looked BETTER than Sam when he came in during the second half of the bowl game last season. Now he looks like trash and I'm not even sure we make a bowl game this season. We fired Herman after a 3 loss season because we thought we should be blowing everyone out.  Now that Herman's gone, it's unfair to expect the new guy to not GET blown out every other game while having basically the same roster. Without COVID canceling cupcakes Herman would have gone 10-3 last year.

It was the same thing with Strong. Strong gets here and all a sudden the cupboard is empty and seemingly unfillable. No guys getting drafted, team getting blown out regularly etc.. Then Herman comes along and WOW we have a few standouts, and the team isnt getting run off the field anymore. We weren't lighting the world on fire but we could compete. Herman leaves and oh no! We suck again!

This entire post is basically garbage. Casey looked great against Tech and the first half of OU, but he's been figured out. Much like Jerrod Heard was figured out. It was also the Bijan show in that game. If we could run with any consistency, the O would work better.

Herman was fired because he lost the team, recruiting was going in the tank, and he had plenty of off the field circumstances to deal with. He was also effectively "blown out" a few times in his first year, third year, and last year. Go back and look how many times a TD in the last minute or so made a loss look more respectable than the game actually was. All this with NFL players at multiple positions.

Herman's best players were Strong's guys for the most part. He brought in Ossai and Cosmi. He also gets credit for Gary Johnson, Calvin Anderson, Parker Braun, and that RB from Cal.

The best player Herman left Sark was Bijan. Who else is worth a shit? Collins has a chance to be good, Rojo is a solid depth guy. Whole lotta meh from shitty recruiting classes. That's a big reason why we suck again.

The coaches we hired misjudged and likely overestimated our talent, if CTJ's info was real, then Sark was already saying this team was no bueno behind the scenes.

Tl:dr - Herman sucks, Sark & Co. likely suck too, but maybe they can be better than Herman's drinking buddies if they can churn this roster.

On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being Charlie Strong and 10 being Nick Saban, Herman was about a 5. Sark is somewhere between a 2 and a 3.

Yeah. I didn't want buy what Sarkisian was privately telling people either, but after 9 games it's more than apparent this team really does suck.

We have two all conference players in Bijan and Worthy. Any good defensive coordinator in this league is going to be able to exploit that fact especially when our QB play is in the bottom tier of the conference.

You don't like the results, but at least the offensive plan is sound. Worthy is an AA because the offense puts him position to succeed more times than not. Bijan was an early season Heisman candidate before the QB play took away any reason for DCs to not key on him. That's a marked improvement offensively from last year when Sam ran around and made plays. Even our 2nd tier WRs are finding the grass, just can't finish the execution from either the throw and catch aspects consistently.

I don't follow the recruiting threads that closely, but there were rumors that Sarkisian thought he was in deep shit with this roster?

On the one hand, I can see how it might be difficult to figure out that your roster sucks (not just compared to what you had at Alabama), but it also seems like a good football coach should be able to figure that out.

Also, with respect to the portal, just like a brand new coach probably doesn't want to come in and say "this team fucking sucks, we're going to lose a lot," he probably doesn't want to dismiss two dozen players from the roster to fill their spots from the portal, even if he knows that's what he needs to do to win this season.

Remember the uproar when Strong dismissed some less-than-solid citizens?

The more I think about it, even if you assume Herman would have achieved roughly the same results with this roster this year (which is a highly suspect proposition), you're kidding yourself that he would have a better record right now.

As pointed out, he lost to ISU and OU last year, had OSU in overtime (thanks to Sam) and probably would have lost the TCU game, again, at least one of TCU and Baylor.  And, given his propensity for openers, probably would have lost ULaLa, too.

Odds are damned decent that Herman would be sitting on the same or a worse record this year, even "duplicating" last year's performances.  Factor in this dogshit roster, and it's probably 3-6.

And, it occurs to me that maybe this team learned it's tendency to let up and cave in the second half from Turtle Tom Herman himself.

    Herman doesn't lose to Arkansas.

Show your work. What on earth makes you think this guy could take these scrubs into one of college football's most hostile environments -- I don't give a shit about capacity: you saw and heard that horde of screaming hillbillies --  and come out with a win?

Historically, Herman wins these type of games then loses to Big 12 bottom feeders. I think Casey starts under Herman.

Herman definitely wouldnt have gotten run off the field by Arky. In 4 years Herman only lost by more than 2 touchdowns once and that was in his first year to a TCU team that finished top 10 in the AP poll. Sark has already had it happen to him twice to very mediocre teams.

I will say that Sark hasnt gotten to Charlie Strong levels yet. In year 1 alone Strong lost by more than 2 touchdowns 5 times.

Still three games remaining including KU. If Sark loses to KU he should be immediately fired.

    Narrator: It was Sam

Sam and Ossai. This is what our defense looks like with no pass rush at all.

We we are an average D last year with one of the best edge players in the country. I definitely overvalued what our D would be without Ossai but we don't have a single player on the edge that would start for any top 40 caliber team.

After the bowl game Collins had, it looked like Herman had been hiding Ndamakung Suh on the bench...

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
