I haven't been on the board since mid January, but I must express my sincere gratitude. On January 22 I was blessed with 2 years continuous sobriety. I was also lucky enough to begin a dream job that same day that keeps me working very long hours this time of year. Neither of those would've happened without ya'll and the support of a program. Most importantly on the 26th, when I was busy at work, my brother called me. He called the drunk who couldn't be counted on to show up to Christmas without enough alcohol in my body that you could smell it, during a medical emergency and a ride to the hospital. He lives outside of ambulance service and his wife and neighbors weren't home. He called me, and I answered and was there for him. They shot him up with morphine and sent him home with a bunch of pills to rest. I spent the night and next day with him to make sure he took his heavy pain meds and sedatives. Six bottles of pills placed out on a counter for four or six hour doses, right next to a full bar of the best whiskey you can buy. I was there, checking the time. The same guy he watched lose his mind and jump out of his automobile at 45 mph as he tried to get me to a hospital to detox just a little over two years ago. Me. Maybe not exactly me, but the same DNA, now a completely different person than I was when I was drinking. I did my job as a brother should to take care of my own. The thought of a drink didn't cross my mind. The thought of sneaking a pill didn't cross my mind. None of that hit me until I was on my way home. "Holy shit dude, that would've been a gold mine of a disaster waiting to happen a couple of years ago." Then I thought a little more. He never would've even called me to help two years ago. I would've found out several days after the fact, if at all. Even if I did I probably wouldn't have cared or remembered much. What a fuckin trip. So much so I still pinch myself every once in a while when I stop and think where I came from and what today is like. If you're reading this and aren't sure shit can change, believe it. Tomorrow is not written if you don't let it. I promise you never have to feel like you do right now again. I'm grateful for my two years. I'm lucky to land my dream job. I'm proud to be the calm one in the office nowadays when the shit hits the fan. I've lived crazier stuff than a couple of things going wrong at work. I like to say there are no more big deals in life after getting sober. There are just opportunities to have the best day I can no matter what happens. The truth is there are some big deals. My brother called me, and I was there. Thats a big fucking deal and I'm grateful. Love you all. Happy days. Grateful to be sober for another 24 hours. Edit. My brother is all good. Poor fucker had a 4mm kidney stone he couldn't pass. I kept saying this too shall pass. He kind of thought it was funny.13 points

I haven't read through this whole thread, so this has surely already been pointed out... There are a ton of audio and video clips out there recounting Rush's racism, bigotry, and general meanness. But I think that - by far - the worst thing he's done is something he says 50+ times every show. "Liberals hate America." "Liberals want to destroy this country." "It's just another example of how liberals are pure evil, folks." That shit has taken a giant toll on this country. After decades of repetition, his audience has heard it so much that they swallow it down like a cult. Nobody flips on the AM radio and then thinks critically and says, "Yeah, I have friends/family with liberal politics, and I know for a fact that they are not a demon who wants to destroy America." Rush has done as much to divide this country as any person alive. And he is the personification of hypocrisy. He rails against immigrants, and in racist-coded language (e.g. "thugs") he argues for stiff penalties for criminals. Then he goes back to his mansion and sends his undocumented housekeeper to fetch him vast quantities of illegal narcotics. He calls for "family values" and faith-based morality, then heads to the airport to take a private jet to the Caribbean with a woman who is not his wife, and a bottle of viagra prescribed to someone else. As I type that last paragraph, it occurs to me that we shouldn't have been surprised by the willingness of today's white evangelicals to support an obviously immoral and un-Christ-like cult leader.12 points

If Bloomberg really wanted to use his money to help the country he would buy Fox News and change the programming.10 points

You know, I take issue with people saying Rush, Trump, and other charlatans like them are “smart.” They’re not stupid, but they’re not especially smart. What sets them apart isn’t any special intelligence, UT rather their willingness to tell a gullible audience what they want to hear, in order to reap personal gain. That doesn’t take any special intelligence. All it takes is a complete lack of moral compass or any external guiding moral principles. It requires that you be, essentially, a sociopath. There’s no genius in that at all. It’s just that they made a choice to advance themselves by lying to people and manipulating them. And it works, but in terms of money and power. Most of the rest of us choose differently. If the rest of us didn’t have any ethics, we might make more money or accumulate more power. But we don’t. Because we’re not fucking sociopaths. There’s nothing to admire about these men.9 points

This thread is incredible and I thank everyone participating. Now while I know nobody cares, actually maybe it's specifically because nobody cares, I thought I would throw my "independent" opinion into the fray. I've already mentioned around here that I'm just waiting to see who the Democrats nominate and then that person will get my vote in November. Haven't actually entered a non-Libertarian vote for President since, I think, 1996. So here is the single data point y'all should extrapolate from AND BASE YOUR ENTIRE NATIONAL STRATEGY AROUND: The only candidate I would even consider not voting for in November if nominated by your party is Bloomberg. Now I'm not saying I would vote for Trump because that's never going to happen, but I'm not sure I'd vote for Bloomberg either. Don't fucking do it, guys. Thanks in advance.6 points

I absolutely understood your point. You think this is the worst case for Tom and Texas. But you stated worst case possible. We’re still way better off than we were 3 years ago, and Herman did that. Do I think he’s the guy, probably not. But he has no booster support and if he fails to deliver we’ll be way better off for the next guy. Not just in players. In aspects of weaponizing a big time program and resources. Top notch facilities, which he played a part in securing. Herman is still a chump, but the sky is far from falling. Worst case is it’s not rising fast enough to suit our frayed patience.6 points

Thanks. Served close to 600 in 45 mins. Yard bird titties were moist as hell. Did not have a bad brisket in the bunch. Mostly cubed/sliced mixed with chopped. So they got some lean and moist. I’m proceeding to tie one on. Wade Bowen is singing west Texas rain in the background. Life is good.5 points

His stupid fat orange face makes me sick. I don't listen to his stupid voice anymore and I would like to not ever see his face again. He is everything that is and can be wrong with the world, embodied in one individual.5 points

Let's say, hypothetically, that you graduated from a college where graduates prefer to do business with other graduates over all considerations. Let's say you also graduated from a college where graduates prefer only to hire other graduates, regardless of actual qualifications. Last, let's say many of the jobs being filled by these under qualified hires happened to involve a fair amount of risk, such that their inevitable fuck ups might create some meaningful liabilities. Assuming those three circumstances are true, is there really a better line of work to be in? Cletus wants to hire Billy bc he's a damn good ag, but he also seems like a moron who's likely to fuck up the job and maybe hurt some folks in the process, so he'd better get some insurance...if only there was another good ag looking to sell him some...5 points

I swear, the media blows Shaka relentlessly because he's (half) black. If we were coached the same way by Fran F he'd be getting scorched. We get it, Shaka is a really intelligent guy. That doesn't mean he's a great coach. He's a fucking horrible coach.4 points

Fuck me, I guess I’ll be the one to say it: because they would rather one of their corporate candidates lose to Trump in the general election than to get primaried out by a Bernie Sanders. That’s why.4 points

Few weeks ago, I am in my office and hear my wife screaming “OMG! Fire!”. I run out, thinking my dryer lint has finally caught fire (40+ years old and likely never cleaned). I run thru the smoke filled house and into the laundry and check it, nada. I hear her behind me “it’s this!”. The baby had been sick, so she had decided to boil the pacifiers to sanitize them. Puts 6 pacifiers in a pot of water, turns the heat on, and walks away. God knows how many hours later, the water had all boiled out and the melting plastic filled the house with toxic smoke. Real cool. Thanks for the cancer, wifey.4 points

"States' rights" is a complete buzzword that only ever refers to the states' rights to enslave, disfranchise, or oppress minority populations. You're certainly not going to hear a Republican tout a state's right to do anything progressive.4 points

Dropped into a local joint yesterday. Guy told me he sold a George T Stagg recently for $400, and a case of Blantons for $100 each. I smiled as I paid for my bottles of 1910 and 1920 which were fully stocked on the shelves.3 points

Why in the hell is this not in the CR? OP, remember that time in Ghostbusters (the good one) when the Key Master and the Gatekeeper ended up letting all the ghost out of purgatory or wherever? Yeah, you just did the Surly equivalent.3 points

Well...Back in 2013 when my first son was born I was all in with the program. I ordered the Centennial Jersey and when it arrived, I wore it once then decided to pack it up for my son. Then I got this crazy idea to buy him an adult size jersey every year, pack them away, and then give them all to him when he is an adult. He has the Centennial and 6 brand new jerseys at this point. My second son was born in 2015. I'm fully invested in my plan now. So they are both going to be surprised with a big box of brand new vintage and new jersey's in March 2033 when the younger one turns 18 and the older turns 20. That's the plan.3 points
