  1. Every single thing you posted was wrong. Swine flu fatality rate was .03 percent. Regular seasonal flu fatality rate is .1 percent Based on data from multiple countries, Covid-19 has a fatality rate between 1% and 3%. And, it has a significantly higher need of hospitalization than either flu variation. Swine flu was talked about. Swine flu was treated seriously. A health emergency was declared within a month of it being found here. Millions of tests were ready a month later. The primary issue with Swine flu was that 1) it hit the younger hardest and 2) it tended to require a higher hospitalization rate than regular flu. The corona virus hits the elderly hardest, and it appears to hit really damn hard, like 15% fatality rate for those over 80 hard. Worse, it spreads easily, lasts on surfaces for a long time (possibly several days), and it is a completely novel virus to humans, meaning no inherent immunity whatsoever to it. If corona virus spreads to the same extent that swine flu did (and at this point we have every reason to think it will absent drastic measures), 70 to 100 million will be infected. That means over 1 million dead compared to 10 thousand for swine flu. That means millions or tens of millions of hospitalizations as opposed to 200,000 for swine flu. So yeah, it deserves a little bit more attention than regular season flu or swine flu. China didn't quarantine 75 million people and shut down their economy because of the fucking media, social or otherwise. The goddamn thing was barely a whisper before that happened. Italy hasn't shut down their entire country save for grocery stores and pharmacies because of the medial. Iran hasn't built mass graves and gone begging for money because of the goddamn media. South Korea isn't testing the entire damn country because of the fucking media.

  2. Just negged everyone of these stupid fucking posts. God damn fuck you and Junior Miller and every other fucking Cloak Room shitheel that cannot help themselves and has to come here on this thread and run their fucking mouths because they don't think the echo chamber of the Cloak Room is a big enough podium for their bullshit. WE DON'T WANT TO READ YOUR POLITICAL LEANING BULLSHIT. I've learned a lot from following this thread. I've never even seen some posters on this site until this thread and they have a shit ton of posts. You clowns have to be one big circle jerk ring in the Cloak Room. I wish every one of your boring, bawling, whiny asses could be negged back into Shaggy and then be forced to ogle scatporn for the rest of this election cycle.

  3. Can we get the latest Trump troll banned from this thread. This thread is actually informative and allows news about the political implications, which are impossibly intertwined with the outbreak, to be discussed. A discussion of it without politics is stupid and this thread apparently attracts idiot Trump supporters like flies. It’s not the “lol Hilary” thread so there should be a different standard for spamming shit posts.

  4. On the bright side today, HEB is apparently sold out of eggs and someone posted on Facebook that our farm was selling them. We've had a never-ending parade of people at the farm today buying eggs. A week ago I was running out of places to keep them because the hens were ramping up early this spring with the warm weather. On the downside, now my wife and I are going to get sick because every fucking stranger in West Sugar Land is stopping by the farm today.

  6. I just flew back from Miami this morning. I can tell you nobody there is acting like there is a pandemic. It’s spring break and people are acting like it. Before you say it, here you go, dirtbags...

  10. And this is how we end up with the least qualified, most narcissistic shitbag on the planet as the leader of the free world. Fuck you. His actions and inactions have cost real lives, not to mention the quality of life for so many Americans. People who think like this are a huge part of this country’s problems.

  11. Dammit, I need to focus on some hope and sunshine for a bit. We the people are about to embark on a pretty tough stretch -- we see the shutdowns and isolation that's already happened, and we all know that it will be getting harder for a lot of people. It will be hard on the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, who shouldn't be out and about at all. It will be hard on those living paycheck-to-paycheck, especially those working in industries that will be hit hard by shutdowns. It will be hard on everyone due to cabin fever. So, I wanted to start a conversation to remind ourselves that, even as we isolate, we are all in this together. We all have to look out for each other. As things move forward, and we are allowed limited access to groceries and pharmacies (this is the case in much of Italy, for example -- you can go out for limited periods of time, with a limit on the number of people who can be in a store at a time), think about your neighbors who shouldn't go out/can't go out because they are vulnerable. Find out what they need, and pick things up for them. If you know someone on the margins who might be running low on something as essential as food....share. And, maybe use this thread as a place to share some of the lessons learned by our fellow humans around the world on how to deal with the stress, anxiety, and challenges of life in relative isolation. We have plenty of discussion of what's happening, what's not happening, and what our fears are. In what may be one of the defining events in modern history, let's have a place to talk about what we are doing for each other, and what we can do for each other, and to take care of our own mental health and well-being. To start: we have two elderly couples on our cul-de-sac. Today, we are going to reach out to them, ask how they are doing, and suggest to them that they think of what they might need in the coming days, and to make lists. And we'll make sure they get it. Let's do this.

  15. The employed individuals who may be hit hardest are those in the restaurant industry. Order food, pick it up and tip as if you're dining in. That is their livelihood - they are also the least likely to have legit healthcare, sick days and get paid diddly squat. And shifts will get cut.

  17. So, I’ve been away from the Internet today because of maddening work shit and going to the hell that is the grocery store. I finally sit down to catch up. I’ve been keeping up with this thread and the DT thread. All I have to say that the way the discussion has been handled is ridiculous. Can’t even mention the fucking President’s name in the DT thread or the objectively terrible management of this crisis over there without the pants shitting Republicans in hiding going apoplectic. And the mods have bent to their crying and wailing. And yet, this thread has been an absolute shitshow this afternoon with no word at all from the mods. I get not wanting the DT thread to devolve into nothing but shittalking but the fact that nothing negative can be said about the way this administration has handled this, Trump’s stupid behavior during today’s PC, or the lack of action from McConnell and the Senate because some fragile sheep are having to finally face the idiocy they support is something else. And it is that one sided because NONE of the babies over there crying about it would say jackshit if someone posted something negative about the way Pelosi has handled this. It’s a fascinating real time look at the way unengaged and uniformed people deal with their shallow political beliefs being smacked with reality. Sorry, I had to vent. Everyone got their toilet paper??

  20. 1) Are you a male fucking nurse, Greg? 2) What the fuck is your post actually meant to imply? That the hospitals are already overloaded in Houston, so they're grabbing surgery centers with new patients coming in hot? Like in a movie? 3) Last night you posted a claim that Houston was going to effectively be put under martial law, by roughly lunchtime today. Is this new update coming from the same source? Or are you being trolled by several different doctors in your office?

  26. Quoting again not to pick on you but you point something else out. I won't quote@ChiTownDoc because the post was so long, but the UCSF panel sees this cycling through the nation over the next year. Let's say a little less than half the nation gets it: 150mm. The countries that have practiced effective social distancing and successfully flattened the curve (China, after Wuhan, and South Korea) have had a fatality rate of less than one percent. Let's call it one percent for argument's sake. Countries that have not (Italy, Iran, China in Wuhan before they knew what was going on) have a fatality rate of three to five percent. For argument's sake lets call this two percent to account for undocumented cases. Note we're not doing that with the other rate. 150mm Americans get it. Let's say it's a shit show at first in Washington, CA, NY, TX, etc. But the country gets the point and reacts better in areas with more time in other areas. Call the fatality rate 1.25 percent overall. 150mm x 1% = 1,500,000 dead. 150mm x 1.25% = 1,875,000 dead. At a pretty conservative estimate, flattening the curve stands to save 375,000 lives. It's the equivalent of avoiding a nuclear weapon detonating over a major city. So to answer your question, what happens after flattening the curve? 375,000 people get to keep living.

  27. Dude just fucking stay at home. Hydrate. Take vitamin C. Unless you have serious underlying illnesses or start to get respiratory distress it's dumb as shit to go see a doc. The idea (soon?) is that someone takes you to a drive thru, you're tested, you get the results at home, if you're positive you just stay home. You don't get a positive test then decide you're gonna head out in public to see a doc who really can't do shit for you unless your symptoms are really advanced. Unless you REALLY hate old people take one for the team and stay in.
