  1. The thing is, I wouldn't blame any president for a stock market crash in the wake of a virus which requires commerce to mostly cease for several weeks. I blame this dumbass for thinking he needed to lie to avoid a crash, and it crashed anyway, and probably worse than if he had a competent response from the very beginning.

  3. Trump is not merely a narcissist. He’s a solipsist. He assume objects and events exist only upon his awareness of them. To him, there is no difference between objective and subjective. If he personally has not pondered something, it doesn’t exist. Hell, even when the words describing a concept pass upon his ears, that concept does not exist if Trump decides it’s fake news. Only once he’s accepted the reality of the idea does it spring into being as an event in objective space time. And that particular mental flaw, coupled with his strong urge to reject bad news solely because it might tarnish his esteem, is why we’re all fucked.

  5. Already well aware. Not a concern now, because it only deals with entry into Canada, not exit, and doesn't apply to US citizens. That said, we're going to start getting her ready to move, if that needs to happen. We still think she's probably safer there than here, but it really depends on whether her peers stay around or not. If her support network all leaves, then she probably needs to leave. She's about to get a whole lot of "Because of the quarantine, we can't go on a date. So show me your tits, so I can masturbate."

  6. I'm not sure if you intend this or not, but the idea that just not shutting down would not also cause economic disaster is misguided. If we don't shut things down, the economy would collapse when hundreds of thousands of people need hospital care and can't get it. The economy would collapse when hundreds or thousands are dying per day. The economy would collapse as people naturally stop going out due to the waves of sick and dead. We aren't getting out of this without further economic hurt, no matter what path we choose. Let's not pretend otherwise. To rephrase, it isn't about you, one person, getting sick or dying. It is about hundreds of thousands or millions getting sick at the same time. A recession is a given. What isn't a given is how much work it takes to recover and how many have to die along the way. We can work towards the best of some bad choices, but only if we act.

  9. Skipped most of the day and just caught up the last few pages. It’s nice to see Greenspoint has gone full bore into his transformation from a normal, unhinged poster to a shrill, perpetually screaming lunatic who just shows up and starts shouting that the world is ending. Just hurling shit everywhere like Buddy the Elf in the snowball fight in Central Park, except, you know, shit. not very productive man.

  13. if you do not have the virus and you stay at home for 14 days with others who do not have the virus, there is zero % chance of you getting the virus in those 14 days thus there is zero % chance of you spreading the virus to others.

  16. Excellent piece from The Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/peter-wehner-trump-presidency-over/607969/?fbclid=IwAR1ibUvk4Y0BAuaApMda1AULe0s9DBAvu3Rmcl1ETYMz33JBSpyl6ZUb35Q Trump is such a habitual liar that he is incapable of being honest, even when being honest would serve his interests. He is so impulsive, shortsighted, and undisciplined that he is unable to plan or even think beyond the moment. He is such a divisive and polarizing figure that he long ago lost the ability to unite the nation under any circumstances and for any cause. And he is so narcissistic and unreflective that he is completely incapable of learning from his mistakes. The president’s disordered personality makes him as ill-equipped to deal with a crisis as any president has ever been. With few exceptions, what Trump has said is not just useless; it is downright injurious.

  20. I bought the guy in front of me's grocery's the other day. I had my cart full of provisions to isolate for a couple weeks and I looked at his and he had something like 4 different items, but 10 items apiece. I started thinking- this looks a little odd- then I thought about it a minute and thought- oh- this is his version of stocking up on his "staples" but he probably doesn't have enough money to do it right. I thought his wife was going to cry when I asked her if it was ok if I bought their food. Best $50.00 I've spent in a while. Hopefully it made a difference to them in some way. They were old (like 75 probably) and had a 3 year old in the cart with them. I was super quiet about it and just kind of nodded at the cashier that the groceries were on me. She told my daughter what I did and my daughter (9 year old) ran out caught up with them and bought her a toy from those things at the door that you put a quarter or 50 cents into. Was proud of her. She said "I guess we both got to help someone today daddy" I hesitate to share this story as I'm pretty cautious about the admonition that Christ makes that those who trumpet their good deeds here on earth get their reward here on earth in the form of adulation. I share here, b/c, I know you assholes won't view that as worthy of adulation, especially coming from me and talking about christian teaching, so I'[m safe there I think. I share, rather to encourage/shame others to participate in random acts of kindness of this sort until all this dies down.

  21. I'm the midst of all this madness, there are some things coming out that remind you that people, and people acting as companies, can be at their best in trying times like this. I've seen things like quest offering free internet to any kids expected to do home learning who don't have net, and zoom making their enterprise solution available to schools for free. In Frisco, one guy started a fb group designed to help at risk folks get supplies, and there are now hundreds of volunteers with the city broken up until zones being covered (it is now expanding into all of North Texas). My own personal experience started with my work today, where the first thing they said on our leadership call (all remote as everyone is now wfh) is that we're obviously evaluating business impact and how to plan for this new normal, but leaders should focus first on their people and themselves personally and make sure everyone is personally doing ok and make unusual allowances for people where needed. Then we forced my 67 yo MIL to call into the child care center where she works and tell them that she really can't come in for a while. They're staying open for now, so we figured they'd fire her. Instead, they told her they understand and offered her a leave of absence with the option to come back when things settle down. Most amazingly they apparently called a couple of the oldest ladies who work there over the weekend and told them they should not try to come back for a while for their own safety. It's a strange world to wake up to right now. Most days I'm awake for only a minute or so before I remember what's happening. In the middle of that, nice to see some real signs of human goodness happening.

  22. yeah... i'm not cheering for darwin. talked to my dad again today, it's his 72nd birthday. he is more annoyed than anything. said something along the lines of 'i guess the whole world is gonna shut down for the flu, ridiculous!' he at least seems to realize it's not a hoax by the media/left. though i had to literally say 'dad... do you think LITERALLY THE ENTIRE WORLD is in on a hoax?? come ON!' he plays drums in the church band...small NE texas town, of course they had mass yesterday. he did say they told him not to come next week bc of his age (higher risk). so then he tells me he was feeling bad yesterday, achy, nausea...but he sleep 10 hours and now feels fine! my favorite line: 'meanwhile, 4500 people died from falling out of the bed last year! good grief!' he's on 50 acres by himself (well, him and his cows and 5 dogs lol) and he's got a freezer full of meat and fish. he's a country boy and can take care of himself, his only health issue is a-fib and he's got plenty of his meds. he did take notice when i told him NOT to take ibuprofen or aspirin if he feels like he has a fever. i mean, he doesn't even have a thermometer 😐 he is self-isolating at least. anyway...i got emotional when i got off the phone. i think a lot of elderly folks may just feel like 'whatever happens is gonna happen'. that definitely seems to be his attitude. i guess i get it...i mean, what are the options? so today was the first day i really felt scared of losing my dad. just lost my mom a little over a year ago. whatever, this isn't political, just felt like sharing.

  28. That's your fear? LOL, dumbasses will always be dumbasses. You watch...even if this ends up really bad, those fucking people will still have some excuse for why they were actually right. You can't think about the dumbasses when you're trying to save the masses...even though the masses are often dumbasses. Got it?
