  1. This article is certainly making the rounds, so let's break it down: So, this is a common tactic that right wing media uses when attacking science. To argue against evolution, they find guy with a doctorate who believes in intelligent design. To argue against global warming, they find someone with a doctorate to argue that the world is getting colder. It doesn't matter how much of outliers these people are. It doesn't matter the number of professional organizations who wholly disagree with them. The right wing media just needs to find one. Congrats NYPost. This is just an idiotic statement. There was no "natural course of the outbreak" that didn't include some level of heightened isolation. Not in NY, not in Wuhan, not in Italy. We, as humans in the 21st century, understand the benefit of isolation in fighting an outbreak. Anybody who follows this shit understands that, however bad it was as described the preceding paragraphs, it would have been worse without isolation. I don't know if the doctor is this stupid (and certainly, many doctors are stupid) or if he is meaning to say something different. Yes, people are afraid to go to hospitals. I think some public announcements could counter that. You know what won't? A resurgence of COVID cases, which is exactly what you will get if people pull back on isolation too quickly. This is my biggest bitch about most of those who are advocating for "reopening the economy." Yeah, there are things that should be re-opened. Once there is enough PPE to handle elective surgeries, and enough ICU/ventilator space to deal with the small percentage of people who have complications from such surgeries, I think elective surgeries should be allowed. If there is enough PPE for general care providers to see patients, and have established procedures to minimize chances of transmissions, I think they should start seeing patients. But that should not be confused with going out to eat, getting hair cuts, and going to movies. In fact, I see those as being in competition with each other. Because if a bunch of people stop social distancing, we will up additional COVID patients, which will reduce the PPE and scare people, and fewer people will go to their doctors and get important elective surgeries. This is a question of priorities, not a binary decision between open and closed. For fucks sake, that is not a random sample. He is either being intentionally misleading with that stat, or he is proof that some doctors are morons. (As are many engineers, plumbers, teachers, etc..) In NY state, we are still only at most at 4.2% of the population overall being tested. (Probably much less than that, but I don't know how many people have received multiple tests.) There are plenty of qualified people trying to estimate what percentage of the population are carrying the virus. He isn't one of the qualified people trying to do this. He's just the guy the Post found. That last sentence is just unmitigated bullshit. How does "getting back to work" help essential workers? It doesn't.

  4. This is a good post. Stay at home orders were never about protecting people from the virus, it was about protecting the health care system from the virus. That's been largely achieved so far at least where I am. States will be opening up with varying velocity no matter how much internet angst is expressed, so it is up to all of us as individuals/families to decide how to best protect ourselves from a virus that will be endemic from here on out. I wish there was a better alternative. A valid public health system that was able to respond quickly to an emerging threat like this so that we never had to arrive here, but there is not. One isn't going to magically materialize either -- especially with it being anathema to the worldview of conservatives that are in control of the federal government. There should be, imo. If we funded public health with the same zeal we fund the military there certainly would be. But the reality is that it is not there and won't be for SARS-2/Covid-19. That's why everyone should vote for the party that values science, public health and healthcare as a right in November -- so that there will be such a system in place to give us a better chance to contain the next outbreak before it gains a foothold and becomes something uncontrollable.

  7. This is why it's impossible to avoid politics when talking about any of this -- even something like wearing a mask ~to protect others~ has been politicized and become part of their dumb fuck culture war now.

  11. Opening at even 50% isn’t viable either and these motherfuckers asserting otherwise are playing make believe. I’ll re-post something a FB friend of mine (who owns a restaurant in Deep Ellum, btw) said: ”Restaurants have the slimmest of margins in the best of times. There is absolutely no way that I can pay rent, property taxes, utilities, insurance, and all the rest on 50% capacity and/or or limited hours. How do I pay a full salary or regular hourly on 50% of revenue? Rent, property taxes, insurance, the list goes on. Someone gonna subsidize my utilities, my rent, my insurance, my etc? And I’m not even getting into employment liability/premises liability issues. What happens if an employee gets sick? Do I shut down and test my entire staff? Do I tell the public a cook had the Covid? Will the public come back in? If I don’t tell the public, and an outbreak is traced back to me, do I get sued into oblivion? I have 100 other points and questions, by the way. Non-restaurant owners casually throwing around “well just open up at half capacity” simply do not understand the restaurant business.”

  13. The thing about Isiah that always comes across is how disingenuous he is. That Bird thing... oh, that was sarcasm. The no hand shaking thing... oh, the Celtics did that to them. Bullshit. Nobody cares if you do or say something stupid. Just own it, apologize for it and move on. People will actually respect you more for it. Charles Barkley did and said more stupid shit than just about anybody that ever played the game, but he is beloved because he is honest about it. Isiah is just a phony. People wouldn't even care that much about how the Pistons played if they just owned it. Instead, they would whine to the officials and act like pro wrestlers. They were straight up bitches about it all. The Riley-Knicks were just as physical and weren't nearly as despised. Of course, they didn't win as much either, but it is a discredit to how good the Pistons really were as to how they are perceived today. Nobody talks about how fucking great Isiah and Dumars were. Isiah was one of the what, top 5 point guards of all time? Dumars was ridiculous on both ends. Vinnie Johnson was impossible to stop one on one off the bench. A young Rodman was so springy and stifling defensively. He and Salley running the alleys on a fast break was great basketball. Even Laimbeer was a fucking great basketball player -- great rebounder with really good range for a big man and a terrific team and one on one defender. He didn't make 4 all-star games and lead the league in rebounding twice because he couldn't play. AND.... on top of all that, they played great team, seflless basketball. Those teams don't get the credit they deserve, but it's their own fault. People think they were just thugs and they were really much more than that. But then again, fuck them.

  14. Did you just point at three insanely athletic bluechips, including a GPOY, two of whom already have some incredible highlight reel plays at UT, and all of whom have bluechip backups (including an AA game MVP) and then say the cupboard is empty? You know this is why people make fun of you, right?

  18. It is sad. It’s also a number that is eclipsed by flu deaths right about every other year. Not to be one of those people, but that is a fucking “Gotcha” headline if I’ve ever seen one. Definitely sad, and eye-opening, but perspective seems to be at the will of ink and keystroke these days.

  36. It’s a 10 year redistricting election, that alone should get Democrats off their ass to vote Blue. If you’re a progressive pissed off about lack of nominees you identify with, you won’t get a better shot to have redrawn seats for candidates you prefer by sitting on your hands. More Dem seats to go around, the higher chance of getting a progressive in one of them.
