  1. Hahaha. No wonder I got PMs from folks wondering if rational people who actually wanted to talk about the Coronavirus had gone somewhere else to converse. I fucking pop back in here and skim the last 2 pages to see an actual conversation has erupted discussing on whether or not America is a fucking good place to live or be born, and people actually have to come on and fucking defend it. Oh, and it's been spearheaded by WashparkHorn? Well knock me over with a motherfuckin' feather. But I'm sure to a substantial chunk of posters on this thread, this is in no way shape or form a political discussion, amirite? Looks like my lack of urgency to seek any kind or Coronavirus updates the last couple weeks was well timed. Jesus fucking christ, some of you fucking people. I've got a buddy who did several tours in the army, ended up working as a handler for CIA operatives all over the world. Let him spend 45 minutes talking to you about the level of hopeless, depressing, utter despair it is to be born and living in Africa, where life means literally nothing and graft is a way of life at every political level (in ways the pieces of shit US politicians can't even fathom as possible) and tell me you're not lucky to be born an American after the first 5 minutes. A place where adult males rape 8 year old girls and their reasoning is their semen will CURE them of AIDS. Or maybe you can be a rural peasant in communist china, where the pollution of water and air pretty much guarantees you're going to live to 45-50 tops and die of a really shitty kind of cancer. A place with over a billion people. But yeah, you've gotta wonder if you were lucky to be born in the United States. I'm not even going to waste my time with a specific rebuke on how stupid a statement that us, I'm just going to render a hearty Fuck You to anyone seriously rationalizing that line of thought. Some of you motherfuckers, I swear. But yeah, this is the non political Coronavirus thread. Go hug your family, and try to stop going out of your way to find reasons to be miserable.

  2. Anyone else ever get the feeling the occupational backgrounds on surly look something like this? 5 physicians, 2 accountants, 3 realtors, couple of small business owners, maybe a dozen tech guys, a military lifer or two, half a dozen construction contractors, couple of teachers, a few unemployed oil barons, a handful of retirees, 4 professional douchebags and around 6,000 lawyers?

  5. You are the one equating us to Eastern Europe and Latin America. Good god get ahold of yourself. Also as a bonus, based upon your American Citizenship if you don’t actually like it here you more or less have the opportunity to move wherever the hell you want in the rest of the world. I will believe I wasn’t fortunate to be born in America when I see the rests of the fucking world stop trying to immigrate here.

  7. For your daily livestock update, pork prices continue to flatten out, and we are adding about 10K per day to our packer runs. If we can recover to over 400K by next week it should stop the euthanizing of hogs, and get cutout values back inline with normal, bellies are flattening out as well. We got cattle runs back over 90K for the first time in a couple weeks, if we can get over 100K next week, we will stop the slowing down of ready cattle for the most part. Beef values are holding the peak, but not ready to drop a ton yet.

  10. That's great. Wonderful. There's a whole thread for that over in the Cloak Room. Why aren't you posting about it there? The only reason anyone is posting that shit here is because they're looking to pick a fight and there's no one over there to fight with. I'm not here to read about how broken this fucking country is, I know how broken this country is, dude. But the only reason you're ranting about that shit here and not in the politics board is because you're looking to pick some kind of fight or make some kind of statement to people who don't want to hear it. Yet you insist on making your point. You guys have been making it on this thread every day for weeks. But no one can answer the question of why you guys don't have this conversation over in the Cloak Room. I guess the answer is some version of "FUCK YOU! NOBODY TELLS ME WHAT TO DO! FASCIST AUTHORITARIANS! FREEDOM LIBERTY PATRIOT!"

  11. I think it just boils down to, every single person here knows that if it had been a white woman jogger, who stopped to check out a construction site, even if there had been a white woman package thief incident in the neighborhood a month before, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Because she wouldn’t have been run down and shot dead. That’s it. That’s why this story is a “big deal” despite what happens in Chicago. He was chased down and shot because he was black. Any other narrative is just semantic bullshit.

  12. We do need to address the mental health aspects. There’s a gal I’m seeing on the side, her oldest daughter is a sophomore or junior in college, and said daughter is now stuck at home. Her son is graduating high school and was headed to UTEP this fall. Her husband seems to be spiraling down a bit. She’s keeping her mind off of not being able to get out and see me (and probably other guys, knowing her), but it’s been tough. She’s sewing and giving away a shitload of face masks to keep herself busy.

  13. Maryland, I think has done a good job with transparency and covid responsiveness. Re-opening based on metrics with input from experts and business leaders. But on the under reporting issue, comparing MD and Georgia is interesting. MD reports 34,812 cases as of today and has 1,550 hospitalizations GA reports 35,245 cases as of today, but 6,228 hospitalizations. Hospitalization numbers can’t be fudged as easily as inadequate testing or reporting on deaths because bed space is a pretty measurable resource. So what’s more likely- the same number of people are sick in MD and GA, but GA has a strain that hospitalized 4x as many people? Or that GA is under reporting their total numbers?

  14. Motherfuckers actually believe that Bill Gates is going to put a transmitter in every vaccine? Seriously? How fucking nutso do you need to be to believe this bullshit? I have a windows computer. Bill Gates already can find out how often I jack off to porn, if he wants to know. I don't believe that he wants to know. I'm seriously depressed about how stupid some Americans are. It's fucking scary that these loons are walking among us. I really hope that they all die of COVID when the rest of us are vaccinated.

  16. This. This is what I just don't fucking get. "OPEN EVERYTHING UP!" To which we actually say "okay, we can do a lot of that. The main thing we need is for folks to wear a mask when we do so. If we do that, it looks like we can keep transmission low, and get business moving along at a reasonable pace, striking a good balance." "NO! NEVER! FUCK YOU! NOBODY TELLS ME WHAT TO DO! FREEDOM EAGLE FLAG GUN!" It's fucking surreal

  18. In terms of health and quality of life indicators, America is not on par with northern/western Europe, Canada, etc. We are decidedly below. Life expectancy fell for four straight years from 2015-18. The gap between us and Canada is as wide as the gap between us and Mexico. Depending on how you look at it, America's usually somewhere in the 20-40 tier for overall quality of life. The only things we're objectively number one at are incarceration, 'beetus, and college football. I'll stick around for the last one but let's not pretend it's silly to say other places are better off. America is still a really great place to be in the top 20-25 percent or so. Added bonus if you happen to be white. Beyond that, we're looking more and more like the former Soviet bloc or better off nations in Latin America every year. Sure, I'm glad I'm from here as opposed to most other places in the world, but right now we're absolutely the shitty house in the nice neighborhood. We need to get our shit together before we have to move to the other side of town. Ultimately it's subjective, but blind American exceptionalism in the face of a different reality is like a 7-5 team touting its superiority. Don't be aggy.

  19. This shit kills me. Do you actually think there’s better out there? Fuck man, this country is awesome. You damn sure were lucky to be born here. And even if by some measure you say “well, I supposed I’d rather have been Swedish” or some shit like that you are talking about what, a few countries sort of in par with ours? In a world of 8 billion? As far as the Texas part man I’ve lived in 12 states and visited 48 (no North Dakota or Indiana) and yeah- better to have been born in Texas than the vast majority of them.

  21. Yeah, there's no two ways about it: this shit is rough, particularly on those already prone to anxiety and depression (like my daughter). I'll say flat-out -- do NOT hesitate to get professional counseling, and to start immediately. There's no shame in needing help, and you're doing the right thing by getting it. We still work with the same counselor regularly, and my daughter goes to school 1700 miles away. I hear you, brother. XYZ's daughter goes to school same place as my daughter, and if she's anything like my daughter, losing some of her college experience and that community, having her summer plans just evaporate completely, without knowing what will fill them, or what next fall will be like, is a shitload to deal with. The boy is dealing with similar stuff, but being an introvert, is weathering it a bit better. I am absolutely fighting the anxiety, fear, and sadness. Not knowing what things will be like for my kids, my daughter maybe not getting more of the amazing growing experience going off to college has been, my son not getting the full measure of the great new school he's in (and thank GOD he was there this year). Worrying about business, finances, our employees, etc. Going a bit stir crazy from the loneliness (I'm an extrovert -- couldn't be more clear now). We're getting outside every day -- the dog has never been happier. But it's fucking hard, and it's wearing on us all. Oh, and layer on the guilt -- how dare I fucking feel this way, I have a job, am relatively secure, we're all healthy, and it doesn't look like things will be disastrous for us -- just that they might not be as good as we'd hoped. How dare I fucking mourn that? But I can't help the way I feel. All of y'all struggling with this shit, or with kids and family members struggling, know that you're not alone. Know that there are folks who can help. Shit, just venting around here can help some. If you want to DM some of us, do that. We all have to help each other -- it's what we are supposed to do, it's what we MUST do in this time of need. I'm sorry that so many are feeling the weight of this world right now. It breaks my goddamned heart.

  23. Funny shit, I see as many dipshit young liberals as I do old angry whitey racist xenophobes not wearing masks when I’m out and about. No one gives fuck all, even after they rant about it on their FB and Nextdoor pages. that’s primarily the thing. One person’s “we need to start opening things up because we’re approaching irreparable damage to jobs” is some other fuckstick’s “way to go, hope you say bye to Grandma on Mother’s Day”. The arguments are so binary, so elementary/rudimentary/fallacious that it’s become a fucking meme in of itself. this whole shit is so fucking stupid in every facet. The drive by rants of both sides make me want to find a liquid $500k and go live the life of a fucking broke beach bum in Costa Rica for the rest of my days.

  26. Well I just got back from running to the liquor store and stopped at the gas station nearby on montfort. I am walking in to pay cause pay at the pump isn't working and I hear a dude inside raising his voice to someone. I open the door and he is yelling at the clerk who pointed to a sign saying mask must be worn inside all Circle K stores if you are over 10. He starts saying it is illegal and against his rights. I go to this gas station alot and the clerks are good dudes from Jordan. They even told him sir just check out and we understand if you don't agree but it is our policy. He storms out quick and yells "if you were fucking educated you would know better." Jesus christ dude a fucking mask has you freaking out like this? Then he got in his shitty honda civic and peeled out of the parking lot without a care for the ppl that were walking on the sidewalk. What a fucking douche and if a mask has you this pissed off then please eat a dick

  29. In all seriousness, part of why this thread is such a shit show is that a public health crisis requires a coordinated public health response with a high level of social consensus to comply. It's exceedingly difficult to discuss this disease and the potential threat to social fabric or economic wellbeing without bringing politics into it because our national politics are determining the response at this moment, both at a government and cultural level. That's just the reality of where we are. I'll give you an example: Clearly, me trolling AR-15 guys on this thread last week was shitposting and my time out (1st ever) was deserved. As a lifelong gun owner who has talked guns both online and IRL with many on this thread I think I can credibly say that I wasn't driven by any agenda other than making fun of the Barbie dream house aspects of that particular gun and the look-at-me-and-my-accessories culture that surrounds it. I didn't mean for it to be political, but it was absolutely shit posting. And in this climate the AR-15 is such a powerful symbol of political tribal affiliation that it's kind of impossible to make fun of it without intrinsic political content. After all, that's why people bring the AR-15 gun to protests about a public health regime - the AR-15 is more totem than tool at this point. There's a better gun than the AR-15 for everything related to shooting, but the AR-15 is absolutely the best gun to take selfies with at Chipotle or wave around at a protest. Likewise, I believe that the emergence of Coronavirus was a natural phenomenon that could not have been prevented but the spread of coronavirus in this country and the consequent economic catastrophe is a man-made disaster caused by our politics. That's not a statement of affiliation. But to discuss that idea certainly requires the acknowledgment of politics and their import. This isn't a safe space from poltics because there are no safe spaces left. Our politics can literally cost you your job or worse, kill you. That's America in 2020.

Fucking elitist, hypocritical bags of shit. What kind of idiots can't tell just by looking and listening to these people's tones of voice that they're not legitimate sources of news? They're like if Barbie and Ken dolls came to life and were reading off of Satan's teleprompter. Go fuck yourselves, Fox News consumers. You are what's wrong with this country. If you really want to MAGA, then get the fuck out.

  33. The "you hate America" line when you criticize anything about our country is the most bizarre, tired shit. It's the same nationalist load of shit you'd expect in North Korea, not the US. I live here, if I bitch about something it's because I want it to be better, and the whole fucking reason for the first amendment is to specifically allow you to do that without fear of repercussion.
