  1. So after 2019 was the worst year of my life, I thought 2020 would be a breeze. Well, to add another shit sandwich to my plate, I found out today that my dad has cancer. It's in his bladder, and he's having surgery on Sept. 9. The doctor thinks he caught it early enough for a recovery. Imaging suggests the tumor is small and hasn't gotten to his kidneys, but we'll know more after surgery. My dad felt symptoms fairly recently. One symptom, actually. During a game in his geezer softball league up in Sun City he had to go take a piss, and he urinated pure blood. He went straight home, told my mom, and they scheduled a doctor visit ASAP. No other symptoms, such as aches, digestive issues, etc. For those of you with experience, hearing that one of your parents (or any family member) has cancer is like getting hit in the gut with a baseball bat. But after my folks explained the situation, I feel better. Still a bit scared, but optimistic. I guess I'm more worried about him going into a hospital with potential exposure to COVID. Fortunately, the case and hospitalization numbers have been down, so I guess the timing is better than it could've been. I've mentioned my dad before in other threads, but he's a former infantry officer in the Marines who served for 27 years through two wars -- Vietnam to start his career and the Persian Gulf War at the end. Since college, I've affectionately called him "The Colonel," his rank upon retirement. He's a 76-year old 6'4" tough, gregarious son of a bitch who enjoys making people laugh, usually at his expense. He was a pitcher for Oregon State in college, but since he moved to Texas after active duty and his son went to UT, he's been a rabid Longhorn fan. I rarely see him in a shirt that isn't burnt orange. You'd love drinking beer with him. A nod in your thoughts or prayers -- or even a crass joke -- would be appreciated. I don’t respect anyone whose ‘personal opinions’ deny science and put other people’s lives in danger. My personal belief is that people who deny science are dangerous, so please respect my opinion!” She got real huffy with me lol. She said I was trying to intimidate and embarrass people with less intelligence into being silent. I told her she was absolutely correct.

  3. I lost of my best friends last night. He was a cockapoo named Yogi Bear and was only 9.5 years old. We are all stunned because he was very healthy (aside from some bad teeth) and maintained high energy up until the last time I saw him mid afternoon. When we got home from picking up the kids at 5:30, my wife found him laying on our back porch, stiff with his legs extended. No evidence that he was accidentally or intentionally poisoned. No foam or vomit in his mouth. No wounds or bite/sting marks. My sister is a vet and tried to comfort us over the phone by listing off things it could be, but we are so in shock because he has never demonstrated any signs or symptoms associated with heart conditions, neurological problems, or cancer. Everyone says their dog was the sweetest, but this little guy would take the cake. Never bit or growled at a human his whole life, always a lap dog that you had to tell to quit licking you, listened to every command despite my horrible job training him. He was incredibly loving and patient with our children, usually curling up with our oldest at bed time until our son fell asleep, then he’d come jump on my bed and sleep with his head on my feet. He was my best friend and a rock of love an companionship during a period my wife and I had to live apart for work reasons, a lost job, or any time something sad or stressful happened. The house feels a lot emptier with the absence of a little 17 pound poodle mix. We are sad that our time with him was cut short (my sister had expected him to live 16-18 years based on his breed, size, and characteristics). We are most sad not knowing what killed him, if he suffered or spontaneously keeled over, and hope that he did not suffer for even a minute. I’m sorry we didn’t take you on a walk all this week. I’m sorry we never started the routine of frequent outings in the truck or to the ballfield I promised you when the human kids got a little older. I wish we could have said goodbye. We will miss you and love you always, Yogi. You were such a good dog.

Will start with a bit of Rock Hill Farms, and then on to Sam Houston 14, Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend (with an Alec Bradley Tempus Nicaragua stick) and Bardstown Chateau de Laubade. Might have to end with a nightcap of Stagg Jr if I’m not completely hammered by then. Enjoy those drams tonight, fellas.

  15. She got tested late this afternoon but they told her she’ll have results in three business days. Which is frankly fucking unacceptable given the ridiculous jump in cases since school started. The positive rate amongst students since the start of classes at Auburn is 28%!! The city won’t mandate that the bars close down - even Tuscaloosa did that. But Tuscaloosa has a Democratic mayor and Auburn has a Trumpkin, so........ Her temperature at the clinic was lower than what she was getting on her thermometer at home and she says she feels okay except for a headache, cough, and fatigue. I bought her a pulse oximeter and her sats are 99, so I feel a little bit better. The entire thing is a shitshow and it doesn’t help that many parents are hooting and hollering about the rules being too strict and they are foaming at the mouth about campus possibly getting shut down. Actual parents are encouraging their kids - and telling other parents to encourage their kids - to NOT get tested and not report symptoms because they don’t want the number of cases to get higher and give the university cause to tighten restrictions or consider going completely online. I broke my personal rule about not engaging with morons on Facebook when one woman said “following the science shouldn’t suppress someone’s individual opinions” and another compared Covid to car accidents and some nonsense about “we let our kids drive even though they have a greater chance of a car accident than getting Covid so the kids shouldn’t be forced to wear masks and miss out on parties”. Everyone is going with the narrative of “College kids are dumb - what did everyone expect?”. While there is some truth in that, when you look at how actual adults are behaving and read the stupid shit the parents of said college kids post on the internet, I’m loathe to expect more from dumb college kids when the supposed adults are acting more dumb than the dumb college kids are. Seriously. I’m just so tired.

  31. The first guy he killed, the killing shot appears to have been the one he fired through the guy's back. That does not help his case at all. The interviews he gave do him no favors - they established that he felt he needed a rifle and that he was going to be inserting himself into dangerous situations. He was a teenager who knew full well he illegally carrying, knowingly out well past the local curfew, and he was from out-of-state, and he crossed state lines after the killings, when he should have turned himself into a police station (not cops in APCs intent on getting somewhere else). Those facts do him no good. This was not an organic situation where he was defending the family store. He drove across state lines, was deliberately violating multiple laws, both state and local laws. I think he's going to be serving plenty of time. Whether he beats the murder charges or not, at least his law enforcement career will never happen.

  40. I’ll ask my son Laramie what he’s hearing. When Tunmise decided to leave IMG Laramie also made his own completely independent decision to leave IMG too. So I got them an apartment together and they’re going to school this semester online. It’s really a great situation and Tunmise, as you all know, is the most wonderful and amazing young man. Laramie has been struggling in some of his classes so Tunmise has Laramie do all his homework for the extra practice. He’s also very serious about social distancing so he makes Laramie stay home at all times while he takes Laramie’s car out. Sometimes he’s gone for 3 or 4 days, I assume out helping the elderly or planting trees.
