  1. Dunno if this has been picked up on, but February 25th is when the head of the CDC went public to tell America to be ready for “disruption of everyday life.” Trump’s interview with Woodward regarding coronavirus occurred before that on Feb 7th. I expect a lot happened in those 18 days... In early Feb Trump was aware of the danger of coronavirus, but not exactly what the protocols to combat it would need to be once we had local transmission. When he was talking to Woodward, he didn’t know that following the expert’s recommendations would result in the economy being shut down and millions of voters being out of work. That’s why he spoke so candidly. There wasn’t yet a context where he was trying to flat-out deceive the American public about the impending danger. Sometime later and before the 25th, Trump became aware that to fight this, you have to shut down and take a big hit to the economy. He realized what this would do to his re-election chances. So he started pushing back — behind closed doors against the the CDC who were giving him the sobering news and recommendations. He probably, more or less, tried to coerce the CDC to completely work against its mission by downplaying the threat and not recommending measures they had already developed for this type of scenario. This led to the head of the CDC going public to tell Americans what was coming on Feb 25th. Think about it — if it had been any other President, they would have delivered the message. The only reason a President wouldn’t deliver the message is if they didn’t want the message delivered at all. Since then, Trump has been engaging in a real-time cover up of the effects of coronavirus in public view. Working against the CDC and other public health experts, trusting that we might have a best case scenario and in his ability to control the truth for his base. He downplayed the threat, called it the flu, undermined the ability to test or even the need, preached against masks, and so on. All to increase his chances to be re-elected. All in full knowledge that innocent Americans would die. I cannot imagine a more vile human occupying the White House. An election loss is not nearly consequential enough.

  3. Yeah, it was on LHN. They'll have it replaying I'm sure. Compare how our team looks and how they look in the drills vs the aggy cbs video showing highlights of their training camp. There's a reason aggy doesn't want to play us right now. We look leagues better than them. The fact they people have them ranked ahead of us is laughable. We'd wipe the floor with them. Couple of things. - Herman has a fantastic support staff in place. I don't think Mack or Charlie ever cared to fully maximize the resources at Texas. Herman has. They mentioned others schools across the country are calling Texas on how to handle Covid-19. Players are getting tested 3 times a week. We can test them every day if we can. Only other organization testing more than Texas football is the NBA. - They showed a few clips of special teams coaching. Boulware knows his shit. Glad he's running special teams. - QBs look fucking good. Hudson Card is going to start the next 3 years. I have 0 doubt about this. He's clearly a better passer than JQJ and Thompson and he was making his reads and getting the ball out quicker than Sam in some of the clips where they are training. You can tell he's been coached up his whole life. His footwork and mechanics are well ahead of most freshman. He's also spent time in the gym and looks like he belongs out there. - This is a mature team that is 100% bought in. The leaders on this team are the best players and the hardest workers. That permeates through to the rest of the team. - I hate to say this... Malcolm Epps looked good in a few clips. They showed his 2 TD catches in the 1st scrimmage. Hopefully he's bought into TE and hopefully we use him to his strengths. He's got insane height and length and he has great hands. He just needs to realize he's 6'6 and fucking get physical and block. - They had a few clips of Troy Omerie. He's a physical specimen. How the fuck did we shit on him all through his recruitment. Sucks that we lost him because he looks like the best WR on the team and it's not close. He made some fucking jaw dropping catches. Tarik Black looks good too. That was a fantastic pick up by the staff. Just a few things I noticed from the all-access episode.

  8. It’s preposterous to propose that the moron set was going to start wearing masks and taking other precautions merely because some Washington Post reporter said so back when this pandemic has yet to kill more than a few thousand people. At the time, Trump was telling his brainwashed horde that all was well, this was just the flu, and masks were for pussies and commies. Who do you think the nitwits were going to listen to? The power in Woodward’s revelation derives from months of mounting deaths and economic losses. Only now do most of us understand the real costs of Trump’s knowing dereliction. Had these tapes been released in March or April, they would have passed like a fart in the wind.

  10. Well, the day finally came when we had to put down sweet Lulu. She had a vet appointment this morning which was supposed to be her final health check and approval for the flight to London next week. She had been doing well but went downhill quickly overnight, and her abdomen started to fill with fluid. An ultrasound showed that the cancerous mass on her heart had grown significantly since July and she had developed another large mass on her liver. She was starting to suffer a bit and the pain was showing today. So it was the hardest and easiest decision to end it. Maybe it was just her way of saying a move to London at 10.5 years old was just too much for her. Maybe she was just ready to go. I’m absolutely gutted tonight and will be for weeks to come. But I’m happy for the run she had and that she’s in a better, pain free place tonight. Give your dogs a big hug tomorrow. You never know when you can get blindsided like I did today.

  11. March 14. Three days after the President banned all travel from 26 European countries and the same day that WHO declared the virus a pandemic. One day after the President declared a National Emergency. Eighteen days after Nancy Messonier alerted the nation (the press) to the alarm. One month after the Senators, etc who were briefed regarding the virus dumped their stocks. Time for John to pack his bags, saddle up, and git gone.

  12. WTF is happening to this thread? Did everyone run out of bourbon at the exact same time, get the "DTs" and start pounding away on their keyboards? Stop all the political back and forth you fuckwits. Take that shit to CR and bomb away. We should be happy right now. Numbers are moving in right direction. We are (speaking for Travis County) where we were three months ago almost to the day in terms of # hospitalized, # of new hospital admits, daily cases etc. This is great fucking news. It happened because the bars were shut down, people put their masks back on and everyone chilled the fuck out for a couple of months. We had a week in July where over 70 people a day in Travis county were being admitted to the hospital for CV19. Shit was borked. Now that Travis has shown it knows how to manage its shit, I believe you can open things up slowly (bars that is). I would follow the "Breckenridge" model. Close 6th street & Rainey Street etc to car traffic. Put tables outdoors in front of the bars, enforce social distancing in bars dramatically and enforce/fine the shit out of bars that go over occupancy. Do this for a bit and see if people can keep it together. This isn't rocket science. We have been seeing what causes peaks and valleys in virus cases since March: If you cram lots of people in an enclosed space and they aren't wearing masks: bars/nursing homes/cruise ships eg you WILL get an increase in CV19 infections, these infected people will go home and give it to others. Those others will.....You get it. This isn't that hard a concept. I am not worried about "flooding" the hospitals here in Travis county. I am worried about moving back to a more restrictive Stage. I have enjoyed going to yoga class again, I have enjoyed being able to eat out again, I enjoyed going to Austin Beerworks this past weekend. I don't want a bunch of fucktards to mess it up. I also want to see my 8th grader play football this fall. If Austin can hold its shit together that may happen. Everyone crack open a beverage, chill the fuck out and be happy that Travis county seems to be getting its arms around this (again)

  20. If you take out your decoder ring and read Billy's reply to Boo Weekley, he's basically validating the entire thing. When Looch says "haven't been nearly as bad as what your friend is telling you" -- note that the OP didn't say how bad it was, just that it was bad/troubling with the chemistry/vibe, but Looch knows it's not nearly as bad as his friend is telling him? He clearly admits that practice has been sloppy - but that NOW it will be fixed. The other ones didn't count. fucking brutal.

  21. So you're saying that the police suck? I mean, they're the ones who are supposed to be solving these crimes, right? It's a bit confusing when the supporting evidence you have for your caterwauling "Leave the police alone! They're not the problem!" is that the real issue is all the unsolved murders. You know, that aren't being solved by the, uh, police.

  22. Before: pool built in the late 70’s. Major structural issues and ancient equipment that cost a fortune to repair over the years and maintain. Also had dated landscaping and flagstone After: wanted a modern look and an outdoor covered patio/kitchen I could use all year. Also replaced flagstone with turf and opened up fencing on the back that goes down to the lake. Still not done landscaping, but moving in the right direction Just waiting for the corona to get finished so our kids can start having friends over again. The whole point was to make our house the one they all want to hang out so we don’t have to worry about them somewhere else. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. @Celery Mancongrats! Quoting myself to reflect on how my program got me through COVID, panic attacks, and fear. 40 days post 1st Covid symptoms. Can't remember if I've mentioned this but back in 2004 before I had any clue that I was alcoholic I had a serious heart problem (ended up with a pacemaker), spent a few weeks in the heart hospital, then went nuts and spent a few weekends in the looney bin, had to take FMLA for a few months, and actually made a half assed suicide attempt. Doctors said "oops your not ADD, no more Adderall for you, you're now Bipolar, here is some lithium and other pills for that." This was the first time in my life (I was 32 then) that I experienced the sheer terror of anxiety attacks. I remember being obsessed for a few days about how I was going to just end it all, and leave behind a wife, a 12 year old, and a 4 year old. Anyway, got straightened out and put on the rails for about 5 years before I started new and interesting ways to reach my alcoholic bottom. When I (and my doctors) discovered in 2011 I was just a garden variety alcoholic and I sobered up, I've often thought back to 2004 and that week of inexplicable anxiety and terror, and how fucking real it all felt, and how in the context of my life that week was an outlier, just sheer insanity. So a few weeks ago I reached a new understanding of powerlessness - New job with percieved huge expectations, covid and can't work, manditory hurricane evac order, took the dogs and wife and went and lived with a buddy in Leander for a week - I started having anxiety attacks and yes, had a few very fleeting thoughts similar to the ones in 2004 about pulling the plug. Most of my fears center on financial disaster/bankruptcy. What if I never recovered from Covid, what if the virus attacked my brain and made me disabled and I couldn't work? I got obligations and an image, man! Character defects just exploding. Ah, but this time I've got a spiritual program - I had a period of 3 days when I was having panic attacks, but now I could chuckle at myself and pray and know that this too shall pass - and it did. Didn't sleep for a few nights - and of course insomnia is listed as a Covid side effect. Stayed in touch with my sponsor, grand sponsor, sponsees, went to a ton of meetings online, basically just stopped thinking and did what I was taught to do. Even came here and posted "this just sucks" Most of all, I prayed more than I ever prayed before. I'm NOT one of those alcoholics that does this daily even though it's been recommended that I do. OK God, you got my attention. Debated sharing this with you guys because I hate admitting weakness, I'm a man, I'm 40, but I gave an abbreviated account in the OCD/Depression thread and wanted to elaborate in the context of 12 step recovery. So today is day 40, I'd say I'm 95% strength. Looking back, I'm grateful for the shitty August because my program and faith were strengthened.

  29. Pointing the finger at Bob Woodward is just oh so leftish. Clutch the pearls, ignore the elephant in the room. Proof positive that it wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference: Trump's base is arguing TODAY that Woodward "cherry-picked" quotes to make Trump look bad. There are almost 200K dead Americans, and they don't even have the intellectual honesty IN HINDSIGHT to recognize the gross malfeasance on the part of Dear Leader. Woodward could not have added anything to the conversation. Trump and his base ignored Fauci, Birx, Gupta, and hundreds of other scientists and public health experts. Bob Woodward was going to turn that ship? Hardly.

  30. Earl gets it. Ricky gets it. Not surprising. Texas ex Earl Campbell said Wednesday he was proud of “The Eyes of Texas” school song even though it wasn’t easy being a Black football player at UT in the 1970s. “I’m proud of that song,” Campbell said Wednesday. “I think that there’s a lot of things that can be done other than (change) that song, in my opinion. “I just believe that ‘The Eyes of Texas’ stands for something. And I think those young people going to the university, as they get older, they will understand. But I still believe there’s things to be done in this world other than (change) that song.” Campbell and fellow Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams met with reporters via Zoom to discuss having their name added to Royal-Memorial Stadium. Since 1997, the grass was called Joe Jamail Field in honor of one of the school’s longtime donors and one of the law school’s most famous graduates. Williams called changing the song an “interesting question, and we’re living in a very polarizing time where people are having strong opinions. “I think anytime we move into a time of crisis like this, people’s opinions flare a little bit,” he said. “I think it’s important to understand our history and to understand where the song came from. But I think it’s more powerful to transform the meaning of the song and the definition of the song, rather than trying to erase our history like it never existed.” https://www.hookem.com/story/20200909/im-proud-song-texas-heisman-winners-campbell-williams-support-eyes/

  33. Nominal is right. The best of Trump's voters in 2020 will let you or one of your family member's be killed by a virus so they can have have a pro haircut, get a tax break, own an arsenal, live in a vastly white neighborhood, avoid a dilution of their power, maintain their privilege or otherwise enjoy any of the various perks that a Trump presidency might beget them. These people are just as transactional as he is. Their decision tree is a straight line consisting of two nodes: Trump benefits me -> vote trump. Who else might suffer or even die as a result of his horrific failed leadership is not part of their calculus because they are as just as devoid of empathy as Trump is. I don't care about how many 2020 Trump voters fit the definition of "cult member". That's completely irrelevant. I care that they are all a direct threat to my family and I regardless of their individual motivations in voting for him.

  36. I was reminded in another discussion thread about the Senators who sold stock while downplaying the threat from Covid-19, having been briefed that it was a very real threat. That's another problem with the continual flood of shit. Those of us not in the cult get overwhelmed I think. My memory isn't the memory I had as a young man, but when there is (what should be) a scandal/crisis every day, you get somewhat numb to it all. It gets tempting to just tune it all out because of how obvious it is that 'justice' will never, ever be done. But like Charlie Brown some of us keep lining up to kick that football again. In some ways I'm jealous of the cult members as it must be easier to just ignore everything and go with whatever the figurative orange grandpa says. Yuck yuck he sure pissed them libtards off today, didn't he? The only thing is their belief doesn't seem to bring them peace. It only seems to make them angrier, which maybe just maybe is a tell that deep down they know that something is rotten, but they are ignoring that tiny voice that tells them.
