  1. I don’t give a fuck about the Texas high school coaches. They haven’t exactly been helpful in stopping the exodus to Oklahoma, osu, bama and LSU these last ten years

  3. Eric Nahlin 33 minutes ago By: Justin and Eric The story of how a player talented enough to pick up an offer as a freshman from Lane Kiffin, and then again as a junior, ended up signing as a preferred walk-on at Texas. “Basically, Coach Beck, Coach Giles, and a few other coaches followed me back in sophomore year but I didn’t hear much from them. The first time coach I heard from was Coach Larry Fedora as he was inviting me to camp. Then, Coach Beck started hitting me up about camp, and I ended up coming to the Austin and playing well. I could’ve played better, but I got to meet Coach Herman, Beck, and Fedora, who are all great coaches. Then, I came to a game during my junior year, where I got to know Coach John Michael Jones. That spring, my recruitment started to heat up and I received offers from many D1 schools. At that point, Texas had Jalen Milroe committed, and wasn’t looking for anyone else. Once Jalen de-committed, I immediately hit up Coach Jones and told him that I wanted to be the QB at Texas. A few days later, they took Charles Wright, but JM Jones told me that I still could be a PWO there, they just don’t have an offer. Coach Herman actually offered me the PWO over FaceTime and I was fired up. Although I had many other offers, UT always had a special place in my heart and I kept them in mind. Then, when Coach Herman got fired, I wasn’t sure if my PWO was still there or not. During this time, I was still talking to many schools that offered me scholarships, but my plan was to wait until Signing Day. As Signing Day crept up, LSU continued to relentlessly pursue me and eventually, two days before Signing Day, they offered me an official scholarship offer. This was a huge deal to me and I was absolutely fired up, as my dad is an alum and I’ve grown up watching LSU. I’d been in touch with them throughout my entire recruitment, and felt like that was going to be the spot. One day before Signing Day, I received a late PWO offer at UCLA, which I was excited about, but still felt like it was between LSU and Texas. So, I called all of the coaches that I had been talking to and told them that I would not be attending their school. I was down to LSU, Texas, and UCLA the night before signing day when Coach Sark gave me a call. I had already been talking a lot with JM Jones and Coach Milwee, but had not gotten to talk to Coach Sark yet. Our call went amazing, and really made me rethink if LSU was the best spot for me. The next morning, NSD, I was so conflicted, and decided I needed more time to decide. I had great talks with the coaches at both UT and LSU, and I was very confused. I texted Coach Sark to see if he could talk again and he immediately got on the phone to talk to me and my dad. After that talk, I started feeling like UT was the right fit for me. I took the night to keep thinking and woke up today feeling the same way, when I finally decided that UT was going to be the place for me. I had three very tough calls to make to Coach Peetz, Coach Callaway, and Coach Ponamsky at LSU, as I have built such good relationships with them. I have no doubt they will be back playing at the championship level soon, but I needed to make the best decision for myself. No love lost for LSU, but I just knew Texas was the best fit for me. After these calls, I immediately FaceTimed JM Jones to break the news to him, as we have built such a great relationship and he is the reason why Texas initially stayed in my recruitment. Then, I FaceTimed Coach Milwee and let him know, which he was fired up to hear and have me become part of the QB room. Then after that, I FaceTimed Coach Sark and let him know the news, which he was very excited to hear. And now, I’m a Longhorn.” Lourd was extremely thankful for JM Jones, “I wouldn’t have signed with Texas if it wasn’t for him.” ##### Finding a PWO as talented as Lourd is an outlier, but the standard from this story, aside Jones’ doggedness on the PWO trail, is Sarkisian’s proactive accessibility. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Sarkisian getting a “you up?” text and being on the phone minutes later. Not only is Sarkisian’s level of involvement in recruiting impressing people, his relatability and demeanor is winning them over. When we say there are the hints of a UT recruiting uprising in the making, it largely stems from his personal interactions with these blue-chip recruits and the excitement he’s creating with them. Yeah, yeah, yeah, “need some commits!” Yes, we know, the processes are in place to ensure the fan base is going to be quite happy with the results of the class.

  4. Not really. They have a stud ready to make it real, and ... fuck it. The other guy can enjoy the shithole. There is a lot of consternation out there about taking an OOS guy at QB in year one, but I have a lot of consternation about the lead guy in this state willing to commit career suicide by going to OSU where they haven’t developed a QB since it seems like Art Schleister. Not talking about picks, just players. Anyway, fuck’em if they can’t take a joke. I’m no fan of Klubnik. I’ll take Murphy and others in the wave of momentum with him. At least it will be interesting. Either way, seems like it’s happening, full Ron Paul-style.

  9. The Industrial Revolution to me is just like a story I know called "The Puppy Who Lost His Way." The world was changing, and the puppy was getting... bigger. So, you see, the puppy was like industry. In that, they were both lost in the woods. And nobody, especially the little boy - "society" - knew where to find 'em. Except that the puppy was a dog. But the industry, my friends, that was a revolution.

  10. Bump, so I can use this thread to keep my sanity. The groundswell of the disinformation, propaganda, entertainment grievance media, and such is and has been disheartening. Over and over again, most of us have at one time or another lamented strained relationships with others who have been sucked into the world of it. I came home yesterday and got rather blindsided with the reality of it all and became unbelievably angry and sad and overwhelmed. A neighbor whom I've mentioned on here before, had returned home from a stay in the country; where the family place is located. We keep the mail so I trotted over with it and we chatted. The usual pandemic stuff, how it is in the rural areas. I should've stopped the conversation right there and gone on my way. The vaccine rollout somehow segued into a dialogue on how AOC is going to run this country and how whites in the rural areas are hurting and white males in particular are bullied, the President did not incite an insurrection even though what those people did on that day were bad...you get the idea. I was a little taken aback at the vehemence and commented that AOC was not going to run this country, that perhaps neighbor might want to check out some news sources that don't hold her up as a strawman fear figure for everything and in what way specifically were the country neighbors of hers bullied because I didn't see anything on the news about any incidents. Oops. Should've kept my mouth shut. I got blasted with how white men built this country and they are under attack on all fronts at a time when they are hurting, that the reason those people stormed the Capitol was because white men built this country and they are being bullied on every front. Did I mention my neighbor is white? Stupid me, I should've mentioned that at the start. This person who had been pretty upset over the insurrection the last time we spoke in passing, has now gone deeper into the bubble. I'm guessing part of the reason for that was spending a good chunk of the last couple of weeks isolated in the country with like-minded angry people and limited media choices. I also found out that black people should just put their hands up and lay down on the ground when the police tell them to stop and nothing would happen. Yeah. White guys who storm the Capitol because they are being bullied are heroes and black people killed by the police didn't do as they were told. I'm not unfamiliar with this mindset but damn, I wasn't expecting the backlash so vehemently boiling over in my front yard. I could go on about the conversation, but you get the picture already. When spouse got home, he could tell I was in a mood, but I just said--I'll tell you about it later, it's not about the family. I hate that--hitting someone who's just walked in the door after a twelve hour workday--with more shit. Thank the Lord he is a reasonable sane man, cause later when I told him about it; he's like, 'what do you want out of this? You're not going to change her mind. It's not going to happen. She'll just go back to the bubble every time and you'll be left miserable that she is that way.' A very good point. Democratic new voter registration, here I come. Get out the vote. Thanks for the therapy. I'm heading to work.

  13. The Republicans have a real problem, and this impeachment trial is crystalizing it in my mind: their officeholders don't have the first goddamned clue who their voters are. Actually, that's two different problems wrapped into one. First, Republican officeholders--at least those who have held office for more than a hot minute--don't understand their supporters. And second, nobody knows if those supporters will turn out to vote without Trump on the ballot. Five years ago, a guy like John Cornyn could go to the Park Cities or Williamson County or pretty much any suburban area and know that he--and it was almost invariably "he"--was in friendly territory. These were his people. They were his friends and neighbors and peers--Good Chamber of Commerce Republicans who wanted lower taxes and smaller government in order to keep more of the wealth that they generated for themselves. Trump drove a lot of those people out of the party. They've been replaced by people with whom a guy like John Cornyn would never willingly socialize. He's not going to go out to Gilmer and hang out at the Doc's Hot Links and parse out the writings of Q with the local (il)literati. John Cornyn's never fucking been to Gilmer. The worst part of it from a GQP strategist standpoint is that it's not just that the officeholders don't know anything about these people; the strategists don't know anything about these people. They're impossible to poll. They're so distrustful of institutions and elites and basically all of civil society that they don't answer polls; they don't respond to traditional canvassing. In that way, they're kind of similar to a lot of urban Blacks. But the difference is that a representative like Eddie Bernice Johnson knows those people. John Cornyn has never fucking been to Gilmer. I'm not saying that he's missing anything by not going to Gilmer. But he's never fucking talked to these people. Why would he? They're reliable Republican voters. All he would do by talking with them is demonstrate how little he relates to them and how little he understands their lives. He doesn't understand his voters. None of them do. And that scares the shit out of them. And what's even more scary to them is that they may not be their voters. Trump didn't replace those suburban Chamber of Commerce Republicans with former Democrats. He replaced them with former non-voters. And it is a big question whether those former non-voters will revert to being non-voters when Trump is not on the ballot. That's certainly what they did in 2018; it's what they did in the 2021 Georgia Senate runoff. The GQP is like the guy who two girlfriends in high school. He decided that he couldn't keep both of them happy, so he kicked one to the curb. And now he's scared shitless that the one he kept is going to stand him up on Saturday night.

If they chop off his head now, his power will fade. It'll hurt for a cycle or two, but allowing him to continue to be a powerbroker is so short-sighted

  23. We could start by not subsidizing things like high fructose corn syrup, which we subsidize literally from the farm field to the factory to the grocery store shelf (via food aid). Our entire system is built to 1) produce unhealthy outcomes, and 2) funnel dollars to for-profit enterprises to either cause or treat those unhealthy outcomes. What some folks are proposing is maybe, just MAYBE, we should scrap that shitty system, and go with one that 1) doesn't subsidize unhealthy outcomes, and 2) incentivizes preventing/early treatment to control costs (actually, Medicare - believe it or not - has a decent model on that). The facts are undeniable, and they are giant: we spend VASTLY more money, per person, on healthcare, with very middling results, outcome-wise, across the board. Our ROI is FUCKING TERRIBLE. If you are a capitalist, there's no way to look at our system and NOT see it as a fucking colossal waste and terrible investment in its current form. Shit, let's imagine a world in which we get the SAME outcome that we get today, but instead of spending almost $8k per year per person on that....we only spend $6k (which would STILL put us as one of the pricier systems in the world). We'd spend TWICE as much as the UK, save $2k per person per year from current spending levels, and still get the same outcomes. Seems like a no-brainer? But no, we have to champion "capitalism! Anything EXCEPT our current system is red-star-wearing COMMUNISM, and will lead to enslavement of all Americans!"....even though the numbers on our system are utterly crappy. We are fighting, tooth and nail, to preserve something that is the most expensive in the world, producing mediocre outcomes. That's not capitalism. That's cronyism, oligarchist bullshit.

  28. Donald Trump has done nothing but prove everyone right who said he was corrupt, incompetent, and unfit for office since the day he was elected. The fact that the rest of us knew it all along is not a defense against him inciting a violent insurrection against democracy itself. That was what we’ve been warning against all along.
