  6. So there's this app called "One Second Every Day". My friend showed it to me a couple of years ago and i've been hooked ever since. Ive always loved film and photography; i was always photographing and recording things my entire life, and this app made that super easy for me. Anyhoo, I've been adding clips to the app and making films ever since then, and i recently was presented with a reason to make a highlight reel of the last 12 months. i made the reel and uploaded it to youtube, and then threw it up on my 60-whatever inch roku TV and watched it, and i honestly felt/feel, "damn, this is pretty cool; this could have a bit of mass appeal." welp, as it happens i am in the process of starting my own youtube channel (i technically already have one, but this will be me being dedicated to producing content and trying to accrue followers), and things like this film will be posted on that channel and sometimes shared here, so i figured i may as well post this one right now. finally, this was the unexpected thing that the film did for me- this last year has been hard. i mean no doubt it's been hard on everyone, but got damn was this last year was a struggle for me, for a multitude of reasons. and yet, when i watched this film on my TV, i felt all warm and fuzzy inside. i said, "man, that looks like a pretty decent life. that looks quite enjoyable." and ultimately that's my hope for anyone who watches this- that it makes them feel good, and feel like life is/can be beautiful, even during the shittiest of times. so, without further loquaciousness, here it is- A Year In The Life of Derka. i hope you enjoy it.

  7. I can assure you that our country is not “obsessed” with fitness. Half of all adults presently or at one time in their adult life, meet/met the criteria for obesity. The author lives in some kind of Gold’s gym/crossfit bubble.

  10. Deserves its own thread to celebrate the Forty Acres’ most successful coach ever. Incredible what he’s done 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 After winning his NCAA-record 15th team points title, University of Texas swim coaching legend Eddie Reese is retiring. That marks the end of a 43-year stint in Austin. Reese coached the Texas Longhorns from 1979 through 2021. His tenure with Texas has been legendary. Reese’s swimming & diving programs won 15 NCAA team titles. Reese-led teams won national team titles in five different decades (the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s). He finishes his career with four more NCAA team titles than any other coach in NCAA men’s swimming & diving history.

  11. I spent some time thinking about things this weekend, and have been struggling with why I just don't want to talk to my family since January 6th. I'm just not wanting to engage with them at all. They are still supporting the same Republican policies they were supporting on January 5th when I could look past it and keep in contact. None of my family have said anything on social media or to me directly that makes me believe they were in favor of the insurrection, and I suspect all of them would be against the events of the 6th if I asked them. And until this weekend I couldn't figure out why that wasn't enough. But I think I've figured it out. Republicans have had some pretty terrible policy ideas for awhile now. What seems to be new is that when given the choice between candidate A and candidate B, both providing the same basic terrible policy ideas, Republicans as an electorate choose the candidate that is the objectively worse human being of the two choices. Do I want the guy under indictment to be my AG or the guy not under indictment to be my AG? Do I want the guy yelling for tort reform who only started yelling for it after he got his, or do I want the guy yelling for tort reform just out of general principle? Do I want the serial adulterer and liar who is so transparently lying that he has absolutely no credibility or do I want the guy who is better at obfuscating his lies and cheating, or maybe even the one who does his best not to lie and cheat? Do we want the supreme court nominee that had a credible witness claiming she was raped by him or do we want another SCOTUS nominee with the same bonafides minus the rape? All of these terrible humans they've put in power had an opponent in the primary. Most of those opponents agree on the main topics of the day. Why do Republicans always choose the worst human when given the choice? I'm discovering I don't want to have a relationship with my family not because I don't like their policy positions, but because I no longer trust them to be a good judge of character, and therefore I don't see how we can have anything at all in common, and I sure can't trust their advice on how to conduct my own life. It was a depressing thought process, but I feel much better now, because at least I understand where my problem is coming from. Now I at least know how to focus whatever conversations I'm going to have with them about this.

  13. Bully for you. Our Thanksgiving was canceled because my dad caught Covid the week before at a small get-together with friends and subsequently infected my mom. Dad was in the hospital by the Saturday after Thanksgiving and stayed there until the day after Christmas, which is when he died an agonizing death with holes in his lungs. I'm just glad it wasn't me who was responsible for infecting him, but the man who did ended up dead himself. Because of that reckless behavior, I'll never have a Thanksgiving or Christmas with him again as opposed to just one. Be glad and, more importantly, grateful you got lucky.

  21. They can choose to play in a realm where you have to worry about social media or they can choose not to play in that realm. I would argue that finding a woman that's not obsessed with social is worth the effort it takes b/c you will end up with someone waaaaaay more likely to be a cool girl, that is available to be an actual partner, is interesting, and not batshit crazy. Seriously, how many people that are glued to their phones and constantly watching what's going on elsewhere and measuring their own lives against that nonsense are of the quality that you want for you sons? My bet is that the answer is "very fucking few". I believe there are still people in this next generation that aren't self involved twits ruled by their social media. Go find them. Life will be better for you because of it. Charlie strong was right about exactly 1 thing- Twitter (and "social" media in general) is ruining this country. I could also add this- as a father of a son and two daughters I obviously have the desire for my daughters not to be raped/molested and for my son not to be falsely accused of such- and a world where sex happens within the context of a marriage, or at least a healthy relationship- and is not normalized to be the response of a drunken frat party hook up avoids any of these consent issues and problems that we have seen dominate 18-25 year old culture. It's a big problem... in hook up culture. Funnily enough- most well adjusted males- regardless of how we joke otherwise- realize this- see Brisket talking about how the least fulfilling times in his life were when he was the biggest stud (I'd be interested to see what that was actually like- but whatever). Meaningless, attachment free sex gets a high five and locker room approval- but I've yet to meet he guy that's really and truly happy and fulfilled with that. There's a certain thread on here that guys are living vicariously through b/c of a middle age guy killing it with ladies from 18-45, but I bet if you asked that guy if he'd have preferred the love of his life and wife of 2 decades and mother of his children not go bat shit crazy and still be a good and solid partner he'd prefer the latter and not the former. We might not be hard wired for monogamy for life- but I've seen tons of evidence that we are at least hard wired to be serial monogamists and I know that for me personally I don't ever want to trade my wife in for a younger model just b/c they are firmer and better looking and more sexually DTF. I hope to be chasing her around the house and irritating her for sex into my 80's or however long I make it. And if I'm not interested in that anymore that's fine too- as I will have my companion and soul mate for life. It breaks my heart to think of a generation that doesn't actually want that (or at least says they don't want that). If that was accurate and fair to how we were made to live we wouldn't see the loneliness, isolation or despondency so prevalent in society. I think Dr. Phil is probably a hack and a fraud and all sorts of whatever bad you want to say about him (I don't watch him at all), and I know he didn't invent this but merely popularized it- but "how's that working out for you?" is a genius question everyone should ask themselves, and they should probably also add "how do you think that will work out for your future self" in there somewhere. These people opting out or getting into hook up culture, by and large, can't argue it's going well for them. The "how's that working out for you?" question I mean sincerely. I use that not to judge but to get to the bottom of what's going on with someone. If the answer is an honest "great" than cool- who am I to say different?

  24. I may try to talk him down to $400. The lens he has on it is worth maybe $100. I will decide in the next few days. My brother, dad and I were at UT dropping off a bunch of materials my father is donating to the UT permanent collections so I snapped a couple of rather unoriginal shots. The olmec head I shot with both my phone and camera, but liked the iphone version more. Going a little wild with the sky, but I really like how it looks (for now). On the way home, stopped by to see the owls...

  25. Fun podcast guys, thanks. Speaking of shots: I thought it was interesting when the piss-chart conversation got going and someone mentioned "championship piss without the championships." Shark's negative response to that definitely shows the disconnect between fans and players, and how players might take criticism of the coach's regime differently than fans think they will--even if the player just got done bagging on the coach. These are still proud guys that love their team and the program. On that note, you guys may want to temper the whole message-board-Herman-hate-and-inside-jokes bit when you get a real player on to talk about Herman. Caused some dead air when Shark didn't have knowledge/want to play along. And leading off with the burnt toast stuff was fun but it kind of limited/circumscribed what could have been an illuminating conversation. There was some really interesting nuance to the Herman stuff that Shark brushed up against but didnt get a chance to flesh out: Herman was an asshole but also the smartest football guy in every room; Herman was intellectual but also socially awkward; Herman was aloof with his players but introduced Shark to his real estate agent and talked investments with him. So i'd say just let the player talk and open up a bit about his take, and then mix in the hard-hitting questions about burnt toast, piss charts, and sociopathy for some extra emphasis. May get a better framing of the whole conversation, and a different take from the player with inside knowledge than the one we all have on the outside looking in. But great to hear from a player like this and really appreciate you guys doing the podcast. Great work.

  29. Not random. They warned Merc to stop doing it right after the RBR pit wall told Max to do it since Lewis was doing it to protect his cushion. I want to think of that as merely utter incompetence, but make of it what you will. As I've been saying for years, F1 simply refuses to enforce track limits correctly and consistently, and now they've made yet another mess because of it. Almost every other series not named IMSA enforces the limits with almost zero issue, but F1 cannot even begin to get their heads around it. It's amazing. And the track limit is the white fucking line, not the got damn kerbs. The kerbs aren't even part of the track. They are outside the track.

  32. When my wife was pregnant, we were at her co-workers house for dinner. Her co-worker had two kids, both boys. We had decided to not find out the sex of the baby, so of course everybody had an opinion of what the sex was going to be. Wife's coworker's father was at the dinner. He's a good guy, we play golf together on occasion, but he has a tendency to say stupid shit all the time. Trying to be nice, and give my wife a compliment, he said "its going to be a girl. All pretty women always have girls first." His daughter, and her two sons, were sitting right there and heard every word.
