  1. I have prayed often that God would spare me from such a loss. I don’t know how you deal with it. About five years ago I saw a man on TV that had lost his 20 year old daughter. The local reporter asked how he felt. I momentarily had the thought of “what a stupid question, how do you think he feels”. Then he changed my outlook for the rest of my life. He said “if before she was born God had come to me and said you can have her, but only for 20 years, I would have said send her on to us. He just looked like a regular guy, maybe a farmer or rancher but it seems to me he possesses powerful wisdom.

  2. I’m a never poster but I was a Naval Aviator for a decade and I’ve been to too many memorial services over the years. One resonated with me because it was so pure and simple - I’m not religious or overtly Christian. Micah 6:8 - (I’m paraphrasing) And what does God require of you as a man? To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your god. I hope Jake was a just, merciful, and humble person. I believe he was, and if there’s something beyond that’s good that he has found it.

  3. To be fair, they are the gold standard when it comes to US teacher/student sex scandal reporting. US sites just post 1 or 2 photos (mug shot, usually). Daily Mail always combs the internet for the hard to find social media pics. Only way you can really tell if the teacher has big tits, etc... I give them lot of leeway for this fact alone. They are like my #3 trusted news source now.

  7. True story, my 13 year old son was in the Pfizer study. My wife and I asked him if he was interested in being in the study last December but we didn't put any pressure on him. He decided to participate because he wanted to help the community. Proud parenting moment. Of course, with randomization and blinding, we don't know if he received the active vaccine or sham placebo injection. He did have a modest reaction to it, as he felt sick and ran a low grade fever. He believed he got the real thing. But I know that there is such thing as a "nocebo effect," so I wasn't completely convinced. Fast forward to last Thursday, he can't go to school because his entire class is quarantined due to a "staff member" who was symptomatic with +Covid test. They weren't allowed can't come back for 10 days. It caused my son to miss 2 events where he was slated to receive awards and also miss his flag football game last weekend. He got tested today and the result is negative, so he can play this weekend. If we knew for sure he received the active vaccine he would've been fine to play. Now, the announcement of EUA expansion of the Pfizer vaccine to his age group, thanks in part to my son wanting to help the community. As proud as I am, I'm still pissed off at the staff member who could've avoided this BS if he/she cared about the community as much as my son does. Am I wrong to feel this way? PS We expect that they will unblind the study very soon. According to the study nurse, if he got placebo, he will be among the very first in line to get the real thing.

  10. Ya sorry but this is an awful take, Sims is already going to be 23 when the NBA season starts, he's given us 4 years and has improved drastically to become a 2 way contract at worst, and if he chooses overseas can get a good contract in Europe. He's never going to be a 1st rounder next year unless he magically becomes an above average 3 pt shooter. The difference in being for example the 48th pick versus 37th pick next year assuming he improves (which isn't guaranteed) is literally nothing. So why is he staying? The possibility of a deep run? Pride? Let the man get paid, he's more than earned it.

  11. I'm not up in arms over folks' speculation, it's the natural progression of things. And noone here is bombarding the family, their privacy is being respected. He passed away, as as grown adult, in his own apartment, so there may not even be a requirement for an autopsy. And if there is, the family can choose to keep the conclusions sealed. I've too heard what it likely was from a tad more reliable sources than Surly (sorry guys). If it ends up being true, it doesn't diminish the tragedy of losing someone full of promise. It actually reinforces the need for us to bring it out in the open. So let's not bash people for furthering the discussion. Shiva may not be over for everyone, but there's bad shit out there that needs addressing folks.

  18. It’s a great place. It has gotten me through many a difficult time. I’m truly grateful we have this forum. Many years ago, my aunt (who is now suffering from dementia at 70–diagnosed two years ago) and uncle lived in Carrollton. Their neighbors lost both of their sons, in two separate incidents, very close in time. They were similar in age to Jake and Sam. The oldest son was killed in a traffic accident. The youngest son was the last person (body) pulled from the bonfire collapse at ATM. My aunt and uncle had given the youngest son an aggy keychain for his high school graduation. I was able to visit with my aunt and uncle this weekend, as I try very hard to see my aunt as much as I can before she stops remembering who I am. Most of the posters know I lost my dad to a sudden heart attack in his sleep in the middle of our MNC season, so my aunt was a huge part of my life since then. My uncle and I were talking about Jake’s sudden passing and he was reflecting on his former neighbors and their loss of their two sons so close together. He told me when their youngest was finally dug out from the bonfire they found the keychain that my aunt and uncle had given him in his pocket. He said that he honestly did not know how the parents got through losing both kids. God Bless all of you who have dealt with so much. You are not alone. Peace and comfort to you. My thoughts and prayers are with y’all and with the Ehlinger family.

  22. I know this is a crazy concept but as guys graduate, other guys come in -- It's called recruiting. So Trevell Johnson will come in along with probably 2 more LB prospects none of which will be needed in the next 2 seasons if we manage to hang on to the young guys on the roster. The 5 guys I listed are "depth" as in they are NOT on the 2-deep you stupid fucking coward. You have spouted ad nauseam that there is no depth. Those 5 players are the depth. They are the guys that are NOT on the 2-deep. So "sustaining our roster" is handled by simply developing at a minimum 2 of those 5 names into guys that would then be on the 2 deep in 2022 and 2023 and is Jeff Choate's actual fucking job. I do think the current depth chart (which doesn't include Banks or LB X) is fine in terms of total numbers and talent - certainly for the next 2 seasons. Sure, it's not 15 deep for those 2 spots the way you would like ... I'll say it the same way I said from the beginning, if a LB coach can't develop 4 players from this group of athletes into All BigXII caliber LBs (4 players being a complete 2-deep at the position) then he should absolutely GTFO because he's not the standard we should demand at Texas. Do you honestly disagree with that? You think this room has no talented players that can be developed by a capable LB coach - especially now that they are in a better scheme with a better DC (Kwiatkowski)? You think that if Chad Glasgow and Gary Patterson were given this group of players they couldn't develop 4 of them? How fast do you think Viedt and Heacock would trade their entire group for this group? You think Stanard and Klanderman wouldn't be able to develop a badass 2 deep of LBs from this group? I don't think there's a name on this list that can't be developed, at a minimum, into a solid backup/2nd team LB. That's absolute worst case, imho. FFS, Jaylan Ford is the lowest rated of the bunch (excluding Richardson and Brockermeyer) and he has already shown me enough to know that he could be a more than capable LB. LBs :: Demarion Overshown 6'3" 215 4 star - 0.9737 - #52 in the country Tyler Owens 6'2" 197 4 star - 0.9513 - #107 in the country David Gbenda :: 6'0" 218 4 star - 0.9313 - #165 in the country Terrence Cooks :: 6'2" 210 4 star - 0.8994 - #303 in the country Morice Blackwell :: 6'1" 196 4 star - 0.8933 - #343 in the country Marcus Tillman :: 6'1" 220 3 star 0.8856 - #440 in the country Jaden Hullaby :: 6'2" 205 3 star - 0.8701 - #620 in the country Jaylan Ford :: 6'2.5" 205 3 star - 0.8465 - #1222 in the country Additions (I could see both of these guys playing rush end and not even playing LB, so we will see) :: Palaie Gaoteote 6'2" 235 5 star - 0.9926 - #15 in the country Devin Richardson :: 6'3" 215 3 star - 0.8276 - #1631 in the country PWO :: Luke Brockermeyer :: 6'3" 210 3 star - 0.8255 - #1169 in the country I'm not going to bother going through this whole thing with multiple teams - so let's have one simple example, TCU. Glasgow/Patterson developed Garrett Wallow and Dee Winters into a very capable LB duo. Hell, Wallow led TCU in tackles for 3 straight seasons and was All BigXII in 2019 and 2020 and they turned him into a 5th round NFL draft pick, based entirely on his football IQ and productivity. (ie. his development). Garret Wallow - TCU 6'2 210 3 star - 0.8481 - #890 in the country Dee Winters :: 6'1" 192 3 star - 0.8688 - #693 in the country Wallow's likely replacement :: Wyatt Harris 6'3" 218 3 star - 0.8581 - #907 in the country TCU depth will include -- (and no they don't go 15 deep) :: Jamoi Hodge :: 6'2" 225 3 star - 0.8722 - 34 JUCO Thomas Armstrong :: 6'3" 220 3 star - 0.8323 - #1617 in the country Jayhvion Gipson :: 6'1" 205 3 star - 0.8464 - #1215 in the country Dylan Jordan :: 6'3" 215 3 star - 0.8808 - #514 in the country Zach Marcheselli 6'2" 220 3 star - 0.8594 - #888 in the country Marcel Brooks - absolute shitfuck At some point you have to stop rolling the roster over and start developing the talent.

  26. It is difficult to know exactly how people will respond. I had an aunt that passed away this past January at the age of 82. She had seven children. 3 boys and 4 girls. She was preceded in death by all three sons and her husband. The youngest son died in an industrial accident at the age of 30 in 1996. About 2-1/2 years (1998) later she lost her husband to a heart attack at the age of 61. 11 months later (1999) her oldest son, 43 years old, was shot and killed by an armed assailant breaking into his (my cousin's) place of business. My cousin's son was also shot during the robbery and is paralyzed from the waist down. Lastly, her middle son committed suicide at the age of 46 in 2005. I was very close to the youngest as we were the same age. As a family we were always doing stuff together. I never knew my aunt to be a very religious woman but once these events started to occur she really threw herself into her faith. She realized that she could not get through this alone and knew that she needed the power of the God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit to get her through the most difficult of times.

"Man who leases house in what may or may not be considered Memorial, but which is definitely not Spring, escapes with pet tiger and possibly two legal thin monkeys or two illegal fat monkeys while out on bond for murder in Ft. 30. Or, more accurately, Bill just "wasn't inclined to ask questions" about that pending 2010 DOJ child-trafficking investigation being launched against Epstein after reading about it in the New York Times, Post, Newsweek, etc...oh, which was an investigation that occurred AFTER that pesky little Federal plea deal that Epstein took three years before Bill's first meeting with him, where Epstein acknowledged that he had been soliciting 14-year olds. It isn't like they were old friends. Gates didn't start associating with him until 3 years after he cut his plea deal. So it isn't about the girls around him being of age...it was about Epstein being -at a minimum - a known predator with an established history of abusing children. Hell, I was living in South Florida during the year before the two of them met and Epstein's case was all over the news there and in New York. Perhaps as a low-level corporate lawyer at the time I just happened to have my finger on the goings-on of the billionaire class more than Bill Gates did. 🙄 And I am not saying Bill is a kiddie-diddler. What I am saying is that I am pretty confident that this entire board of degenerates would view such behavior as socially disqualifying, so the same should apply for "the smartest guy in the room".
