  1. https://auburntigers.com/news/2023/11/9/womens-tennis-womens-tennis-signs-ashton-bowers.aspx That was fast...barely over three months. But then again Auburn just fired their head coach two weeks ago. Really concerned now that Maya Joint may go pro and skip college. Her WTA rise has been pretty meteoric. Was a really good junior but nothing too flashy in terms of results compared to other Americans who recently skipped college (talking about the likes of Ashlyn Kreuger, Alycia Parks, Robin Montgomerry, etc.). Ranked 1377 last fall. Then switched nationalities to Australia, moved to Australia for 5 months to train at one of their national centers, got a ton of wildcards, and now has shot up to 336. That's a 1000 ranking jump in just 5 months! Now she's back in the States and has another WC to qualifying draw of the Austin Opne.
  2. https://tennisrecruiting.net/article.asp?id=11538 Voted #1 Recruiting. What I find interesting is this quote from Joffe...'In Maya Joint, Arianna Pursoo and the two other players we intend to sign, I am optimistic about the future of Texas Women’s Tennis...' Sounds like Joffe has two verbals that have yet to be announced.
  3. Australian Open Qualies going on right now: Signed UT recruit Maya Joint last summer changed to representing Australia. Got a wildcard and beat top 200 Natalija Stevanovic today. Here is a link to the match. Hopefully she still comes to Texas and does not skip college. https://ausopen.com/video-player#!?videoId=6344582515112 Lulu Sun plays later. Lulu reached the main draw last week in New Zealand and is now back to her career high ranking (189). Miguel Angel Reyes Varela (class of '09) was recently elected to the player's council. Lloyd Glasspool won at ATP doubles title in Brisbane last week.
  4. FYI, this commitment has been known for a while (See post #42 in this thread); so not really a recent development Texas looking like the conference favorite again. OU is probably the biggest challenger before it's off to the SEC.
  5. She and other recruit Maya Joint have played doubles together on the ITF circuit. Also noticed that Joint has recently switched to representing Australia.
  6. Micah Braswell's brother is in the portal 👀
  7. The Baltics go 1-2-3 in the Heptathlon (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia)
  8. Lots of news the past two weeks: Unfortunately word is that Khirin is in the transfer portal. While it's not definite (TTU's number one men's player entered and withdrew from the portal), it would make sense scholarship number wise if Sasnouskaya were to transfer in. ISU's coach has been hired at Clemson. Expect quite a few attrition in that roster. Both Carmen Corley and Layne Sleeth at OU have opted not to take the extra COVID year. Baylor is losing its number one player Alina Shcherbinina to OU. OSU is gaining Anastasiya Komar (top 10 ranking last season) from LSU.
  9. Personally I find the CrackedRackets coverage earnest but ear screeching. I know the commentator Alex is doing his best but it disrupts the broadcast so much every thirty seconds he's barking at some guy off screen to switch cameras. "Let's go to court 2...no don't put it on the side, I want it on the big screen....wait don't cut out court 5, they're playing a deciding point....." I remember back in 2008 ESPN was broadcasting the men's final (Georgia vs. Texas). Then in the early 2010s there was a huge push to make NCAA tennis more appealing on TV (cutting doubles to a 6 game set, no warm up for singles, making third sets supertiebreakers if the match has been decided, etc.). Well that hasn't worked, tennis is not more televised. NCAA should be ashamed with how they dealt with tennis coverage.
  10. Aggies will be good next year but this year their fans really billed as 'their year' with a stud USC transfer, Carson Branstine (two time junior grand slam doubles champion) finally having a complete college season after having to sit out two years, an instate girl coming back for a super senior year...only to have Branstine having a season ending injury in the middle of conference. Will be a big 'What if?' for the Ags.
  11. Always not fun to lose but the team put on a solid season. I'd grade the season a solid B+. With Kempenaers-Pocz coming next year, Texas will be in the thick of it again next year.
  12. Quick look at the South Carolina lineup shows that their weakest areas is the lower part Texas also fortunate to have the early start time Thursday
  13. As I had guessed, Charlotte and Sabina had the tougher matches. Pretty cool to see Taisiya win against her old team (her opponent though wasn't on the team last year after transferring from San Diego State, also started her college career at OK State where she beat Peyton Stearns). Now it's on against UNC. Pretty tall task against the number 1 but UNC has to be one of the biggest underachievers in any NCAA sport. Since 2010, they've finished in the top 5 except for one year where they finished 8th. During that time span, they've won 6 indoor titles but have never won at the NCAAs and only ever been in the finals. Seems like there's a big mental block even though this may be their year.....because as always in NCAA tennis, there may be some stacking going on 😈. Crawley is play line 2 despite being ranked number one and only having two losses on the year. UNC also tried putting Tanguilig at 4 and Forbes at 3 even though Tanguilig never played at 4 during the season- enough coaches filed a protest and UNC was fined and had to fix that part of the lineup. There's a whole twitter discussion.
  14. Looks like the rain ends around 3 only to pick up again 3 hours later. Pretty neutral about going indoors. Pepperdine's 2 of 3 losses were indoors and there aren't that many indoor courts in Southern California. Charlotte and Sabina are going to have probably the toughest matches. Sabina plays against Janice Tjen (lot of people think she should be playing at 1). Charlotte is playing Savannah Broadus who is undefeated this dual season. Broadus is from Texas, remember hearing about what a talent (both as a tennis player and overall athlete) during her junior years.
  15. Congrats to Bianca...but it's going to be a tough job to get out of the SEC cellar.
  16. Yeah that's complete b*****t. Joffe has won 5 out of the 6 last conference championships (regular and tournament) but doubt Joffe is losing sleep over this. Texas is actually shaping up to host the Sweet 16 thanks to USC and Washington having strong conference tournament and San Diego not making it to the finals of the West Coast Conference (Pepperdine will not gain any points from their conference tournament). Only thing that can stand in the way of hosting the Sweet 16 is if Ohio State makes a run and wins the Big 10 tournament.
  17. Sorry to burst that bubble...
  18. Just to let y'all know how tough Texas' schedule was: all but one team (UCF) are likely to qualify for the NCAA tournament Texas or TCU likely to share SMU, UTSA, and A&M Corpus Christi in their draws. Real question is how stingy the NCAA committee will be- will they send A&M to TCU or Texas to save transportation cost despite A&M being in the top 20?
  19. Right now SMU is ranked 32 so would be a 'low' 2 seed. Can see the NCAA committee easily sending them to College Station as A&M will be the second national seed. Also Baylor will more than certainly be sent to College Station too if they make the tournament. A&M Corpus Christi will be the four seed in either College Station or Austin. SEC will have 8-9 teams in the tournament, so good odds one of LSU, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, or Auburn gets sent to Austin. If Texas makes it to the round of 16, opponent will be one of Stanford, Pepperdine, or Duke. Hoping not Stanford- will depend on the Big 10 and West Coast Conference tournaments this weekend.
  20. Committee always seems to go straight off the computer rankings (unless the adjacent team has the winning H2H). Texas should mathematically keep the top position in the computer rankings.
  21. Joffe better win Coach of the Year- replacing half your team is no easy feat. He's also not won the award since 2018! Argument could be made for Khirin to win both Freshmen and Player of the Year
  22. Beginning to think Texas was going to choke; it was either the 6th or 7th match point at line 1 Really windy, will be interesting to see how much movement there'll be on Tsaiya's serve
  23. Spizziri absolutely smoked his returns (off the first serve too!) in that last game
