  1. Last night my son found out that he was accepted into UT's Geology department, which came as a surprise to him. He is excited about getting in to UT, but doesn't really know much about the career options for Geology. He was originally planning to study Mechanical Engineering. Any UT Geology or Geosystems Engineering students or grads in here? Wondering if you can provide some insight into the job outlook and such. I'm a UT ChemE myself, but I don't really deal with this field to a great degree.

I'm curious if Terry ended up getting the job, how many of our assistants would stay on staff. They came here to coach under Beard (for a lot of $$$). Would they stay to coach under Terry? One reason why Beard has been so successful is that he is a MASTER salesman. He has been able to put together great staffs wherever he goes. Whether or not you think Mark Adams was the right choice to be head coach at Tech, he was still an extremely accomplished Juco coach and a tremendous asset to have on the bench. The current Texas staff is one of the best in college hoops. They also deserve a lot of credit in addition to Terry for the season we are having. They are certainly a lot better than Terry had at UTEP and Fresno.

Exactly. It seems impossible to really root for this team if you are dead set convinced that Terry cannot be our coach going forward.

I guess I don't understand why your appreciation is limited. The job he has done keeping the ship afloat has been incredible. It could be that his skills are best suited for exactly this scenario. Calm things down. Take the talent that has already been developed and win games. And those skills are likely only a fraction of what is expected for a leader who will run the program for the next decade. So I'm capable of appreciating what he is doing, but also separating that from the decision of who our next coach will be. They are completely different scenarios. It is like judging a substitute teacher with the same measuring stick as the actual teacher. Completely different jobs.

I guess this will turn into the speculation thread and not the appreciation thread I had intended.

This thread is to appreciate the job this guy is doing. He was able to take over the team under a terrible situation, with no warning, and quickly got the team through it. I can't imagine a much bigger distraction than what was possible here. And yet, Terry and staff have kept team largely undistracted and focused. At time of this OP, he is 11-3. We are tied for first in the Big 12 through the half-way mark at 7-2 He has maintained a winning culture and has done the little things to win close games that would have been losses in previous years. He is doing a great job with rotations and is managing all of these highly successful transfers well. Our freshmen are playing team basketball, not hero ball like so many potential one-and-dones. Carr is playing his best hoops and is making a case for 1st Team AA. Brock is being maximized. Rice is our assassin. And Hunter (likely hurt) is also getting his confidence back. Terry has already delivered some big wins including #11 Baylor, #15 TCU, at #20 WV, #33 OSU (twice), at #37 OU (AP and KenPom). His three losses have all been to very good teams... at #2 Tennessee, at #13 Iowa State and #7 K-State (that one was admittedly painful). Kudos to CDC for opening the check-book last year and building such an experienced coaching bench. Not many teams have a staff with this much coaching depth who could step in and lead in this environment. A lot of people are focused on comparing Rodney Terry to Chris Beard. I think that is misplaced at this point in time. For now, I would rather acknowledge the amazing job he is doing getting us through these troubled waters as a promoted assistant / interim head coach. We can talk about his future in the future. For now, we are incredibly fortunate to have Terry leading the team.
  7. If that is the case I haven't seen it. Maybe I'm just not sensitized to it. The board has seemed pretty aligned to me, which is why it always surprises me when you make these very aggressive counter arguments. I'm just not sure who you are arguing with. Oh well, I agree it will work itself out within 2 months.
  8. This is exactly my point. I don't think this is a divisive issue among anyone that even casually follows the program. That said, I was talking with some non-Longhorn family members this weekend and they were like "Are you guys hiring Terry?". I told them "I doubt it". And they were surprised. "But he is doing so well!!!!" I'm sure everyone has friends and co-workers like this. Can we all just agree that these people are clueless and don't represent the people on this board?
  9. I don't really think that Terry's future is much of a divisive topic at all. Everyone seems to be in alignment that the only way we keep him is with a truly outstanding year. The only debate is to whether it will take an Elite 8, Final Four or Title run for him to keep the job. We haven't made an Elite 8 since 2008 We haven't made a Final Four in 20 years (and only once in my lifetime) We have never played for a title If he does any of the above, there SHOULD be a debate about whether he keeps the job. And the strength of his position increases a ton the farther he goes. But until any of that happens, there is no point in speculating. I would LOVE to have these debates in April after a great run. I also don't see much debate regarding whether we have digressed since Beard's arrest. Of course we have. That said, it took a while for the shell shock of Beard's arrest to wear off. We have also entered conference play and the Big 12 is the toughest conference top to bottom I have ever seen. So... it is hard to know how much to attribute directly to Terry. But anyone arguing he is up to par with Beard isn't worth arguing with.
  10. I didn't see what happened before that, but I wouldn't put it past Harden to be in the game, but then to run down and sit on the bench waiting for this opportunity. If that is the case, then it shouldn't be illegal. Because usually it would result in a massive failure since your team is playing 4 on 5.
  11. The fact that we are 6-2 in the brutal Big 12 with the drama around Beard is really incredible.
  12. I would tell you my secret parking spot... but then you would use it and I would have to kill you.
  13. I mean... you make a lot of good points. 😃
  14. Even though Hunter is in a slump, he is still much more efficient on the season than he was last year. He has higher FG%, 3P%, FT% and significantly lower turnovers.
  15. For me offering Chet Holmgren in any deal is the equivalent of multiple unprotected firsts. He was just the #2 overall player. Honestly I don’t think I would trade him straight up for Gobert when you factor in age and salary. Who knows what a pick becomes. Maybe a great player. Maybe a #22 throw away. I agree generally that OKC should stay the course. But they are looking like they are ahead of schedule and they have way more picks than they can ever use. I would sprinkle a few picks to get some players NOW, while keeping the bulk of the war chest for the future.
  16. Probably true. But I don’t think OKC is giving up those assets for disgruntled or underperforming players. They will end up with a player or two that is currently being “built around”. IMO.
  17. Sabonis becomes a free agent at the end of next season. If they think they are going to lose him, I can see them taking a good offer. And OKC has the ability to put together some incredible offers. Let's say OKC offered Sacramento Chet Holmgren, the 2024 Clippers unprotected pick and the 2025 Clippers/Houston/OKC pick. Sacramento would be insane to turn that down.
  18. Siakam would be a great fit. I would also see what it would take to get Sabonis. That dude is basically Jokic light. And then pair him with a cheaper rim protector (again, like Bamba). Although I guess they have Holmgren who will play that role.
  19. I think it is incredibly unlikely, but if I was OKC, I would try to mend fences with Durant and bring him back for a redemption tour. It could also help rehab his image (though I'm sure he doesn't care much about that). Even though the Nets are doing well right now, I think their ownership would entertain some offers given the drama of the last few years. Then I would use another chunk of the picks to go get DeAndre Ayton or Myles Turner. For this year, they could throw a few picks at Orlando to bring in Bamba to help at center and take some of the load off of Chet Holmgren in the future. James Wiseman might also be an option. This has the potential to be a title team: PG - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander SG - Josh Giddey SF - Kevin Durant PF - Myles Turner C - Chet Holmgren
  20. Back on OKC... here is a summary of their future draft picks for those who have lost count. Future picks are my reasonable best guess: 2023 - 9 - Best 1st rounder between OKC and Clippers 2023 - 37 - Best 2nd rounder between OKC and Wizards 2023 - 50 - Best 2nd rounder between Miami and Dallas 2024 - 5 - via Houston 1-4 protected 2024 - 8 - via Clippers unprotected 2024 - 13 - OKC own pick 2024 - 14 - via Utah 1-10 protected 2024 - 45 - Worst 2nd rounder between Charlotte and Minnesota 2025 - 6 - Best 1st rounder between Clippers, Houston (1-10 protected) and OKC 2025 - 20 - via Miami (1-14 protected) 2025 - 22 - via Philly (1-6 protected) 2025 - 48 - via Atlanta (31-40 protected) 2025 - 52 - Best 2nd rounder between Boston and Memphis 2025 - 54 - via Philly 2026 - 7 - via Houston 1-4 protected 2026 - 8 - via Clippers unprotected 2026 - 20 - OKC own pick 2026 - 45 - Best 2nd rounder between Dallas, Philly, OKC 2027 - 24 - OKC own pick 2027 - 25 - via Denver 1-5 protected As it stands, OKC could have as many as 9-10 lottery picks over the next 5 years! Plus a ton of 2nd round picks.... 20 picks in total. There is no way that they can even use all of these picks, so I would expect them to be active in bundling them up to go higher in the draft, or in trades to get some better players.
  21. Houston is tanking so expertly that people can’t tell if they are trying to lose games or if they are just terrible.
  22. Terry has to figure out a way to get Hunter going again. Hydrate him up, play him 35 minutes and tell the other players to get him 30+ points. Don’t care if he has to put up 40 shots to get there and we lose the game. This team can possibly get to the Sweet 16 without him, but no way we go farther than that. He needs to play like the best player on the team - and he is capable of it.
