  1. On test days, Dr. Guy would walk in and write 10 increasingly complicated calculus problems on the chalk board, making them up on the spot (no notes). And generally, if you got them right they resulted in reasonably simplified answers. We never got a single graded homework or test back. Ask about your grade... "You are doing fine", or the dreaded "Better come to my office hours".
  2. Didn't Jefferson state that the goal of public education was to create a well educated electorate? Seems like all high school graduates should be handed a voter registration card/ID along with their diploma.
  3. Wasn't the original intent of the Bill of Rights to protect the states (and thereby citizens) from the federal government? It wasn't intended nor interpreted to protect citizens' rights from their state government until about one hundred years after ratification. Does that factor into this discussion? Also, if you ever visit Colonial Williamsburg, see the public magazine there (where the people's arms were kept), and hear the story about the British Governor Dunmore seizing the people's arms and powder in 1755, it might put the "prefatory" statement of the 2nd amendment into perspective. The framers weren't stupid, they didn't waste words, there was purpose behind it (but it wasn't what the NRA would have us believe).
  4. Treat guns like cars. You buy one, it is registered to you, you pay property taxes, registration, and inspection anually. Must buy insurance that responds in the event someone is harmed, must have a license and training to legally operate. If you sell it, title is transferred and taxes, insurance, etc. are paid. If a car, I mean gun, registered to you is used in the commission of a crime, the cops are at your door and you have problems. Better lock those things up. And if you report it stolen but you still have it, problems. Cars are sold with locks/keys, wtf? Make gun owners bear the costs associated with their fetish.
  5. Maybe it has been said somewhere above, but as bad as the situation is for our Afghan allies, failure to plan their evacuation wasn't an oversight. We didn't spend American lives, 2 decades, and trillions of dollars handing the country to them to govern and arming/training them to fight the Taliban with an assurance that, if they failed and the shit inevitably hit the fan, they could drop their guns and be airlifted out. This was always a sink or swim proposition (as shitty as that is in human terms). While in the chaos it looks like we are failing our Afghan allies and the general population, it reminds me of the old saying about breakfast: "the chicken (USA) is involved, but the pig is committed" (and I am aware how offensive that sounds). The Titanic was designed without adequate life boats. We are dicks; they get fucked.
  6. Who is John Galt? That book doesn't seem so silly in 2021.
