  1. I moved that discussion to the other thread in 9.95 for now for visibility. This is exactly right.
  2. I was actually thinking about this today. This is brilliant and very easily doable without really changing anything about the board or doing any development. Yeah - there's no way I'm doing ads for legacy members or treefiddy. If there was a way that wasn't overly manual to do a group with people who have 100 posts within the last year that would get you excluded from ads too. My thing is if you are a pure lurker with no account you see ads, but it shouldn't make the site unusable (that happened this past year and was fixed recently). I've told people this before, but if we had just 8 $750/mo sponsors we'd add even more NIL programs and probably have the Kill Squad done. The site isn't in danger or running at a loss in a fiscal year that is calendar aligned - if it's August to August aligned there isn't a shortfall. The danger is that if Surly shows a loss for more than 1 year it becomes a "hobby" instead of a "business" from the IRS perspective. If anything we just cut back Burnt Ends and the tailgates and call it a day.
  3. That's not really how it works and I am definitely "old" from their perspective, I have 12-16 years on these people.
  4. This is the problem, everyone is too busy on insta and tik tok to do any of that.
  5. Would love to do this. I’d even go in person to meet with counselors etc. the problem is that the school doesn’t seem to want to help. I tried the last 2 years and it fell flat and on deaf ears and I’m not gonna continually chase administrative people to tell kids about the opportunity. The other way is to set up a booth on campus and let people know but I’m now an “old” so it just really comes off as creepy and not genuine IMHO.
  6. Fucking slammed and went hard. doneness was perfect for everyone. Some liked it well done and others more traditional and I like mine rare. I was shocked at how well I nailed the whole gamut.
  7. Those threads had so many screenshottable exchanges and straight up original memes in them like every other page.
  8. Visibility. A lot of people don’t wander out of here at all.
  9. We had 850+ people in Tuscaloosa and averaged well over 100 this year at the tailgates. I think that side will figure itself out next year. The NIL stuff will just get pulled back a bit to allow for some padding at the end of the year. We did 14,400 each basically being okay with some churn off when we could have done 10k and been fine with the churn we had. 2023 had a lot of layoffs. A lot.
  10. The thing is I think everyone is actually aligned on all 4 of your key points and that’s what makes this place special. Sprinkle in a hilarious edit her and there and that’s the magic. I’m not saying we need jimbo getting spiked by a volleyball at pool party gifs all the time, but they have started to get further and further apart.
  11. Let me know if you need party VIP ticket unlock code they are sold out to the public.
  12. Special ordered this bad boy from HEB. Marbling is awesome for prime. 15.75LB feeding 16 adults. Wet rub is 1 cup of garlic, 1+oz of rosemary, pepper, salt, sugar, paprika, coriander, allspice and a little more than a 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil. On the smoker @250 will check on it at around 100-105 IT then pull it off and crank it to inferno and sear for crusty crust. Planning on resting it for 45-60 minutes.
  13. Made this job post on upwork. https://www.upwork.com/freelance-jobs/apply/Event-Photography-and-Videography-for-Sugar-Bowl-Game-Day-Experience_~01836f705e1ebac94e/ Here’s what I sent to some people that is more detailed on what I’m looking for. I’m looking for someone local to help me run a team to document and shoot our game day experience for the Sugar Bowl. We did full buyouts of both Manning’s and Fulton Alley and have over 1100 pre registered attendees with a sell out capacity of around 2k, which we feel is going to happen. The event will start at 10AM we have a broadcast booth inside with programming all day and a radio show outside as well as an MVP area with former Texas football legends that will be in attendance. We have a second line leaving around 4PM and circling the CBD coming back to Manning’s around 5PM. I’m not sure if the drone laws in NOLA, but overhead shots would be incredible of this. I also want at least one stitched together view of the entire party singing the school fight song. Throughout all of the venues and promenades, which will require multiple simultaneous shots and stitching. We will have plenty of talent with on air experience to help out. All of this is to benefit our Charity - Texas One Fund and we would leverage a lot of these videos, interviews, photos and media for future collateral. I think it would be appropriate for a small team during the peak of the event (2-6PM) and maybe just 1 or 2 for the bulk of the event. I’d also like someone to stay back at the watch party to capture big time moments in the game and perhaps the win reaction if Texas pulls it off. I’d love to bid this as a project and I do have additional onsite security that can help with crowd control and positioning when needed. Let me know if this sounds like something you are interested in running with. https://texassugarbowl.party
  14. This is what I thought pre Covid, but now I’m absolutely certain that young people legitimately have no idea how to have actual conversations with people who disagree with them. I’ve seen it professionally, I’ve seen it here, you see it on social media, you see it everywhere. People just want to be spoon fed everything and entertained. It’s why TikTok and instagram reels or whatever are all the rage. The algorithms are actually not even good. The content is absolute garbage. Doesn’t matter to young people because they get to turn their brain off and feel the brain tingles. We live in real life idiocracy, but instead of it being some guy that woke up centuries later we live in the same time period only a generation apart.
  15. fuck twitter. We are just using twitter to troll people, not really to draw in traffic. I don't think a lot of people realize that we generate the most longhorn content and discussion out of any place on the internet. We are driving significantly more content in posts/reactions etc than Twitter/FB/Instagram/whatever. There's a difference between followers and likes and comments on what you post. Except for the Texas Football account and a few players we drive WAY more engagement.
  16. It's not just the message board, it's that we've been able to keep our cultural identity and fend off the blatant over politicalization of everything - Cloak Room has evolved and Daily Texan is a bit different than before, but those 2 places have kept the rest of the board pristine and very much the same vibe as before the internet went to shit. I don't want an algorithm pushing suggested shit to your inbox or notifications, I don't want to spam your fucking email, I don't enshittify you when you sign up and engage I reward you with no ads/fewer ads. If I showed ads to "legacy members" tier of people, even just one at the top of the page revenue would skyrocket. I'm just not willing to compromise on things like that because I feel like when you do that is by definition the enshitification of the internet.
  17. I'm not complaining about the community at all (except for the fucking twitter OP's in recruiting, cut that shit the fuck out and please at least just drop their actual commit image) The reason I don't change things is because fuck the new enshittified internet. This place is awesome and the rest of the internet has gone to complete dogshit. Do I wish we have some more MS Paint, GIF and other original stuff going on? Sure, but that doesn't make this place broken it just makes it less "drive by" friendly. I fully expect if Texas wins it all this year that the site actually goes back to nearly how it was with Shaggy because people will be willing to invest the time/effort on stuff when it's rewarding.
  18. sorry about that - I think with all the weirdness it was due for a rebuild anyway. Should be done by tomorrow morning.
  19. The parity in college football is significantly diminished as well. The top 20 teams are way different than the rest.
  20. Operating the site is profitable. I could make a mint off this site if I didn’t do all the work I do on the NIL front. I don’t talk about it because I don’t do it for the clout I do it so our student athletes get paid fairly for what they do for us and how much enjoyment they bring to the community. Burnt ends is no longer fully funded this season and we had a lot of churn off due to layoffs changes in people’s circumstances, people just generally not giving a shit about NIL whatever. I’m not one to shame and beg for money over and over because this isn’t an NIL site. I also never solicit subs to the site etc. In person events and fundraisers have been a huge burden compared to previous years because the scale of these events has increased dramatically. Next season the tailgate won’t be free to everyone, but subs and burnt ends members will get a cheaper ticket than the general public. If there’s anything that’s super obvious from the sugar bowl tailgate is that people are willing to pay a fairly substantial amount for a top tier experience that is still accessible to the “every fan” and isn’t a bunch of white tablecloth jerkoffs acting like fat cats. Vax/anti vax is same same as is the eyes racist/not racist. people started hating each other for stupid shit and one of the reasons this place feels like a “liberal shithole” is because intellectual honesty and fact based conversation is actually something we took a strong stance on moderating. It alienated a huge section of the community. (Lurkers are part of the community too) Not because we took an ideological stance, but because some of the more outlandish characters also started to become demonized and weaponized incredibly dangerous rhetoric not based on anything other than pure speculation or wild conspiracy. it’s different when those people are writing fan fiction about a sports team, because it’s funny and they just look outlandish and off color, when it’s related to actual real life serious shit it’s not funny it’s divisive and dangerous. January 6th really really fucked shit up. Black Lives Matter fucked shit up. Etc.
  21. (split this here for visibility and generally to let people know what’s going on) I mean they aren’t completely wrong on some things. Covid ravaged this community and that combined with the 2020 election has really broken a lot of the non sports irreverent discussion and commentary. The internet is just a totally different place than it used to be, we also don’t have nearly as many content creators starting media based threads - we are a primarily discussion and link aggregation community vs an original media content community. Shaggy had a lot more people doing their own photoshops, GIFs, MS Paints and a lot of generally more consumable drive by type stuff. If you don’t care about Texas sports this place is actually really difficult to land on and go. Our coaching search threads, Quinn transfer thread, manning commit thread etc are some of the best in the internet regardless of school. This isn’t a place to doomscroll or just come consume content without having an opinion and that’s just not what the internet is anymore for 18-30 year olds. I’ve been trying to figure out a content strategy that will work without alienating the existing community, but there really isn’t a way to balance it. We don’t want to be barstool longhorn, they don’t drive shit for engagement and are just the shithead Steve of Texas football. Take other people’s shit or be unoriginal and crass and call it a day. I don’t know if there’s just something I need to do to reward posts over 100 rep with a bounty to get people to start creating more original content again, but I can’t tell you how much it actually fucking pisses me off that almost every single recruiting threads first post is just a twitter embed of an edit not even hosted on this site. We don’t need write ups of the recruits but someone doing funny ass edits would be absolutely on brand and money for what the community loves. I just can’t fund that in any way and balance all that in doing for NIL and running this site in a way that effectively costs me hundreds if not thousands of hours a year. I’m not going to do all that work and then pour another 30k of my own money on top of it, it just doesn’t make sense as this isn’t my job. Surly for the first time ever will post a fairly significant 5 digit loss this year. Some of that is just timing for NIL payouts not being aligned with the calendar year, some of it is having to switch ad providers, some of that is the economy going to shit and subs canceling for both Burnt Ends and Treefiddy to the point where I’m effectively subsidizing everything out of pocket. The problem is if I don’t do it, no one does it. No one was going to do shit for the sugar bowl to raise money for NIL or have a cohesive longhorn driven experience. No one was doing NIL tailgates. No one planned anything for Tuscaloosa, no one is doing fuck all that doesn’t make them money off the backs of the student athletes. The university obviously wants no association with the site but turn a blind eye on a lot of shit we do so I chalk that up to calling it even. I’ve obviously had a lot of help from @RGBIII @BobbyB @closetojumping @SquishMitten @SydneyCarton @BornAndRaised @Tex48 and sponsors like @MrRogue and @Wulaw Horn who get what it means to support the community, but you are kidding yourself if you think this site is healthy from a community perspective or at all sustainable as a business in its current state. It’s quite frankly ridiculous that a site with our traffic and reach doesn’t have anchor sponsors for some of the highest trafficked boards in Texas and the 24th highest traffic for American football related sites. We are coming off the biggest season since 2009 and traffic from the existing user base is high but there is no new blood. A lot of posters are dying, moving on, tuned out during 5-7 and never came back etc. whenever I ask for help booking up with commercial opportunities it mostly just fizzles because no one really takes us seriously. Sorry for the rant, but reading threads like that on other sites and realizing that’s it’s not wrong and how damaging that is overall to potential growth is frustrating to say the least.
  22. Maalik plays school. Great move for this young man. I hope he slays it and gets drafted.
  23. No idea. He hasn’t been around and there doesn’t really seem to be any Texas based people who died with what is likely his name in the timeframe.
