Where was Dalton Knecht on this list last year?

Heading into last year's portal I really wanted Grant Nelson,  but his time at Bama proves that,  although he's a decent player,  he was no where near the difference maker that I thought he'd be.  The basketball portal isn't necessarily the exact science it claims to be. Counterintuitively the college football portal rankings seem to be much more predictive than its college basketball equivalent. Typically predicting football player quality is more of a hit or miss excercise than basketball,  but not in this area.

  2. Speaking of a player I wish we had on this past season's team, Jaylon Tyson might have fucked around and played himself into a first round pick out at Cal. Players like him are why it's at times ok to be patient with a players growth curve.

i haven’t followed recruiting super closely in forever. who is a good tre johnson comp? keyontae george? rob dillingham? someone else?

Jordan Hawkins of last year's UConn team.  Super compact game (ie doesn't need a lot of dribbles to get off a short), highly efficient scorer.

dude. you’re seriously going to make me post this for third time in the thread? really? and you’re thumping your chest when you’re wrong? bold strategy. but here we go again:

    AdjD during the kenpom era

first number is AdjD which is points given up per 100 possessions weighted for sos, the second number is the national rank

    2024- 100.3 (61)

    2023- 92.1 (13)

    2022- 91.6 (14)

    2021- 92.8 (31)

    2020- 92.6 (24)

    2019- 94.4 (26)

    2018- 94.1 (12)

    2017- 93.7 (21)

    2016- 96.8 (40)

    2015- 93.4 (14)

    2014- 97.3 (53)

    2013- 95.5 (54)

    2012- 97.0 (64)

    2011- 89.6 (4)

    2010- 93.1 (30)

    2009- 92.5 (20)

    2008- 95.5 (42)

    2007- 100.3 (92)

    2006- 91.7 (15)

    2005- 97.1 (61)

    2004- 94.1 (22)

    2003- 95.8 (58)

    2002- 98.3 (74)

    2001- 90.1 (11)

    2000- 87.5 (11)

    1999- 91.6 (36)

this year’s Texas defense was tied for the worst defense of the kenpom era (so, since rick’s first year here) with the 2007 team that that was all skinny, tiny freshmen and basically only played six guys. a quick scan of the numbers and you can see that 100.3 is a number that is wildly high for the standard that’s been set here at Texas.

a final note to drive home how bad of a coaching job this defense has been:

    D-1 experience:

    2007 Texas: 0.37 years, 333rd in d-1

    2024 Texas: 3.23 years, 4th in d-1

so not only has Terry had a shaky season with his mercurial, volatile team, he’s done so with as much as d-1 experience as he will ever have on any roster he coaches the rest of his career.

the more i post, the more i can’t believe we still have people who want RT to be our HC.

Wait a second,  Im starting to get it now.  You're under the belief that the more frequently you rant about it here, the more likely it is that RT will be fired.

in the end we had our worst defense since the KD year. that’s a fact. barnes, shaka, and beard all fielded good-great defenses routinely. RT just fielded the worst defense since our roster was six 155 lb teenagers. taking the warped final kenpom ratings after our last two games and trying to act as if that proves that we had a “good” defense this year is…….wait for it…….

disingenuous. if you guys hate me using this word so much you should probably start being honest with your arguments. as if you’re going to sit here and post one screenshot and it will suddenly erase everyone’s memory to the fact that our defense was not good this year, and in fact the worst it’s been in a very long time.

All things being equal, I kinda like having  good offense vs having a good defense.  I'd much rather be a fan of a team that plays like Arizona or Gonzaga as opposed to UofH or Tennessee.

  6. More than any other sport, a true home court advantage can add multiple games to the win column.  Beard understood this and worked harder than any other Longhorn coach in my collective fandom to develop and facilitate it. Too bad he went dumb that one night. Barnes probably adds 3 or 4 more top 4 seeds to his Texas tenure with a true and consistently intimidating home court advantage.

Gerry is 100% right that RT waited far too long to get Hunter off the floor and off of inbounds.  That's just low-IQ bad coaching.

Abmas had 4 TOs and 2 early fouls.  We were sort of running out of options as far as taking Hunter off the court.

Team has looked poorly coached and aside from Weaver it seems every player either regressed or didn’t take a reasonable step forward.  The program is on a downward trajectory, but Terry is extremely likely to get 3 full seasons as coach. The bar for next season:

Miss the tourney: 2025-2026 hot seat (sweet 16 or you’re fired)

6 seed or worse with Round of 64/32 exit: 2025-2026 is warm seat; better be a top 5 seed in the tourney in 2026 or you’re fired

5 seed or better with Round of 64/32 exit: 2025-2026 is warm seat; better make the 2026 tourney or you’re fired

    Sweet 16: good job

Elite 8: good job, here’s a moderate extension

FF or better: great job, here’s a massive extension that makes you one of the 10 highest paid coaches in the sport for the next 5+ years.

Who specifically regressed this season? Name the players you're referring to.

texas shot 42-110 (38%) from the field and 8-37 (21%) from deep in the tourney with our best shooting team in years. discipline and shot selection were nonexistent at times.

Disu pulling a full 180 from his tourney performance last season was crucial. He ended the season as a 50%+ 3pt shooter yet only hit one 3 during the tourney.

Well we aren’t firing Terry and he’s earned at least 3 years minimum, but if he’s available, I really, really like the Iowa State coach.

I dont.  I actually like good offense.

Hunter needs a reboot --  it's not good for Hunter or Texas for him to return.

Big year for RT -- up to him to rework this roster to compete in the SEC.

Gerry discusses next season roster building in this video too.

I disagree with Gerry on Hunter and feel he's being a little too emotional in his analysis. RT needs to keep Hunter and maintain some aspect of the culture he's built here and add some savvy amd composure to the backcourt to team up with Hunter and Tre.

  12. Hunter is fine as long as he's not the primary ball handler.  Abmas just couldn't consistently get by anyone and was a surprisingly poor distributor.  That plus his many defenses lapses made him him a relatively poor pairing alongside Hunter.  While not PGs both Johnson III and Scott will have some ball handling responsibilities akin to that of Jabari Rice.  What we need is a high quality ball distributor to add to the backcourt and a high quality interior scorer to pair with them.  If we can get any quality contribution out of Chris Johnson and Devon Prior next year to go along with Weaver and the freshmen gone are the days of having midgets fielding our back court and wings.

That comparison hadn't occurred to me, but now that you mention it, I think you have a point.  Man, if Weaver had THAT upside . . .

I remember being shocked that Westbrook was so highly sought after by the NBA. His skillset at the time he was drafted was similar to what we see from Weaver. He was basically a slasher who barely handled the ball outside of wheeling in from the wings.  Darren Collinson and even Josh Ship were their main ball handlers that year.

  14. He needs to improve his handle and perhaps his composure on the offensive end. He gets ahead of himself at times, but if anyone remembers Russell Westbrook at UCLA, Weaver reminds me a lot of him.  Just a spaz of loosely controlled energy, especially during Westbrook's freshman season.
