You gotta feel like this is the chance for a win since their offense isn’t as potent as before

Two of the players who were supposed to provide power this year have disappointed, one relatively, one completely. Jennings hit ~ 30 homers last year and has 5 this year. She is still clutch and has a > 400 average overall, but the power isn't there. Sanders also hit about 30 homers last year, and she been just plain bad. I think more strikeouts than hits, and only 220 overall. She's sitting a lot.

That said, OU still leads the nation in team batting average (390) on base % (480), slugging (715), and runs per game (9). But last year they were scoring 10 a game.

Jayda Coleman is putting together a player of the year case with a 500 batting average, 640 on base, 8 HR, 12/12 stolen bases, and outstanding defense.

That's fucking awesome. We give each other shit on here constantly, but all or most of us have kids. A dad's biggest wish is for their kids to have a better life than they had. Congrats to you and your daughter.

Also good on you for giving her only name brand cereal growing up.

Back in the day, middle school was well known to be more dangerous than high school because most of the REALLY dangerous kids had been dismissed or left before high school.

Dasan McCullough is an elite pickup for their defense.  Rouse is probably a plug-in starter at OT.  Most of the rest are depth/rotation adds.  If they get Jordan Kelley back, they should be fine at DT, with Coe, Sears, Halton, and Gilliam.

I think Venables addressed most of OU's needs, except maybe at WR.  But with Farooq and Stoops back, it's not too bad a situation there from a talent standpoint.  Their offense is going to work, or not, based on the run game.  It'll be interesting to see if the Florida State game is a sign of things to come.  That was the first time Lebby's OU offense started to look competent in the run game and they had a couple of freshman pop off for 100+ against a good Florida State team.

    Very informed. Some added context:

    Offense note 2021 --> 2022
OU's offensive in fancy stats took a big step back from top 5 to top 20 - 25. Points per game fell "only" 7 because OU had so many more drives per game.

    Offense, running game:
Lebby will feel more comfortable running Gabriel, who's an asset running the ball. The threat of the QB run game will mitigate the loss of Brayden Willis, who was a true asset as a blocker. The RB position will be as good as last year running the ball. The OL showed surprising proficiency run blocking vs a good Florida St front 7.

    Offense, passing game:
Gabriel is himself. Above average deep ball, avoids the middle of the field. It's unusal to see big jump in QB this late in his career. RB have to get better in pass protection, and we don't know if they can catch. WR needs at least one more transfer and/or one of the newcomers over the last couple of years to pop (5 new last year + 3 this year). OL was a disaster in pass pro vs FSU. Rouse will improve that, but it's a safe assumption that OU's OL pass protection will be worse with the loss of Anton Harrison (bigger loss than Mims?).

    Defense note 2021 --> 2022
OU's defense gave up 4 ppg more last year but efficiency stayed about the same because they faced so many more drives. This is despite OU losing many of their best defensive players from the 2021 team (entire DL, best LB, best DB).

    Defense, running game:
OU's DL was pushed around last year. Portal adds Lacy and Sears may at least hold point of attack better. Venable's LBs have a history of superlative play that wasn't shown last year. Improvement here will be expected. Safety play should also be better.

    Defense, passing game:
OU couldn't rush the QB. That SHOULD change with several options at DE/Edge added in recruiting/portal (top high school Edge, McCullough, Bothroyd, Ford). LBs in zone seemed to develop a sense of playing receivers rather than areas of grass as the season progressed. DB play gradually improved as the year went on. At least there were few flat out busts in the latter half of the year. DB recruiting class was outstanding.

I’m sorry this happened to you. Thank you for linking the study. I haven’t had time to read it in detail, but it suggests there may be a correlation between patients who were previously infected and then got a booster, which sounds like what happened to you. The overall numbers of EMS calls are small however, and I could not find on quick scan whether they analyzed documented cardiac or vascular events (acute MI or ST changes, PE, stroke or limb ischemia) as a subset of total EMS calls.

The French study is 70k documented vascular and cardiac events looking at over 40M lives. I did not see any analysis broken down by age groups, other than upper limit of 75 y but it showed no association. It would be nice to look at the 16-50 yo subset

clearly we need more well designed studies with high power

Finally anecdotes are important. They are data points and get enough together you can see apparent trends. That allows well designed studies to be done to see if the apparent trends are real associations

I appreciate @Sawbonz measured take and @Spankytoes situation.

Because of the high community prevalence of the infection, the proper way to think of decision to get the vaccine is:

    __ get vaccine
    __ get infection without vaccine

Rates of cardiac/vascular disease from infection withOUT vaccine are FAR higher than from the vaccine for the general population. This has been shown repeatedly.

The rates of myocarditis from the vaccine are higher in adolescent and young men but are still less than rates of cardiac disease after infection. Of course there are other benefits from getting the vaccine.

Yes, I'm an expert in this field who's oh so tired of talking about this. Ok no more from me about this.

Yes. There’s no long term data because, like with the shots themselves, there hasn’t been enough time to properly monitor them. Unlike the “wackos”, people just accept that the shots are safe despite the fact that we rushed them out a few months after we figured out what COVID was. I got 2 Pfizer shots and a booster. I’ve caught COVID twice, once while I was hospitalized.

No one can definitively rule one way or the other. We didn’t figure out that blood transfusions may be bad until we gave a lot of people HIV.

I've read your posts on here, and I'm sad for your situation. But your conclusions about your own situation require some context.

    PM me please.

This is what happens when you make Donald Trumo your leader. You just attract ignorant, corrupt, trash people like flies to shit.

Go back to September 10, 2001 and look at the 21 1/2 years before and the 21 1/2 years since. What trajectory are we all on? What the hell will this look like in 2044?

1981 was when Reagan took office. The revanchist impulses of the Republican party were just taking off. This is a long game.

WR Andrel Anthony.  The 6'2" 190 pound WR has 19 catches for 328 yards and 4 tds in two seasons of play at Michigan.

The mgoblog guys have long loved Anthony's upside. He had limited opportunity due to Michigan's many WR options and may have bad hands. But he's got good size, excellent speed, and good route running. OU offered already also.

Played out as a rerun of the Tulane - OU game in Sep 2021 until the last Tulane drive (Green Wave turned it over on downs at midfield).

Riley kept Mike Stoops after the defensive meltdown in the CFP semi-final Rose Bowl game so we'll see what he does here with Grinch. Stoops was a competent strategist but had terrible people skills so he didn't recruit well or communicate with players. Grinch seems to be well-liked by his players, but his under-performing units with obvious developmental failures make it hard for him to recruit to talent. His strategies make people who know defensive football cringe.

The defensive staff has at least one good coach, Shaun Nua. He has produced as a recruiter and developer. The rest of the staff is expendable.

Anyone find an unbiased take on OUsux's recruit class and how it matches up with their many shortcomings?

    My take:

Pluses: QB, developmental OL (but not 2023, a year where OU will have to have 4 new starting OL), RB numbers, Edge, LB, DB

Deficiencies: High pedigree RB (a position where it frequently translates), HUGE deficit in WR numbers (will need to get from portal and so far haven't), interior DL (a position which was filled with JAGs last year and it showed in poor defensive run efficiency)

There was some reporting where 14 of 25 were high school team captains and 13 of 25 are early entry. This is supposed to be taken to mean that the class has high character and will be ready to contribute early. Of course, we'll see.

Holy shit! What even is this? Serious question. Any random collection of college-aged women has to be better than this.

I know that part for Venables. We’ve seen it plenty here. I’m specifically talking about Riley. OU has a better class than USC right now. USC should be like texas and sell itself. And they’re actually good. I remember his classes at OU too. Top ten maybe just outside and we’ve always had better even with our losing seasons. Lol. I mean of course UT > OU. I guess I find it weird he’s not more in the top 5-7 range for recruiting classes.

Lincoln Riley is a more ruthless version of John Mackovic. He focuses all of his time and energy on offense and offensive recruiting. He's going to stack his talent towards the offensive side of the ball. Defense is a fucking nuisance to him, just the thing that delays him from having his offense back out on the field. They're never going to emphasize the defensive side of the roster and they're never going to play tough. He'll talk about those things, and he'll be full of shit as always.

In his four high school recruiting classes at OU, Riley took 39 offensive players and 47 defensive players (numbers below). He was certainly willing to throw numbers towards building a better defense. He also was willing to slow his offensive to protect his defense.

I propose an alternative explanation for Riley's unbalanced success. His offensive success attracts better offensive players who create more great offenses, a virtuous cycle. His defensive coaching hires have sucked at recruiting and developing players so it creates a vicious cycle. Riley could still care about defense but just have the wrong defensive coaches.

                offense    defense
    2018    10        13
    2019    11        13
    2020    12        11
    2021     6        10

Doesn't include portal players. But as readers here know, there were fewer back then and databases are incomplete.

He's built a good reputation on the defensive side of the ball, and is hoping Lebby and Bedenbaugh will attract quality on the offensive side.  So far, it's worked halfway, but this class is nearly as defense-heavy as Riley's classes were offense-heavy.

Aside from Arnold, Green, Pettaway, and maybe J. Johnson, they're not getting the absolute top-flight dudes on offense.  They need help with RB and WR recruiting in a big way, and Bedenbaugh has some reputation to rebuild.

Bedenbaugh's OLs have generally improved throughout the season. The 2019 OU OL was good, but it wasn't better by the end of the year. 2000 and 2021 were flat out mediocre beginning to end.

The 2022 Sooner OL did get better throughout the year. Problem is, OU's losing 4 out of 5 starters from that line. 2023 is going to be a pivotal year for Bednebaugh. It looks like he's getting back to his preferred style of recruiting TEs and letting S&C bulk them up into OL. Hopefully, it starts to pay dividends next year.
