I usually don't love relics, but I love that guitar.  Custom shop?  Vintage reissue?  62 or 63?

You pretty much nailed it.  Custom shop 63 reissue.  I’m not a relic fan, either.  But this was the best guitar I played today and it just happened to be reliked.  I have not been faced with this conundrum before, but ultimately I decided that I would regret leaving the best guitar on the rack just because it had a fake hobo rape job done to it.

The other really nice Tele was a 51 nocaster custom shop reissue.  It sounded and played just as good, but had a chunkier neck that didn’t feel as comfortable to my left hand.  Someone will be really happy with it, though.

Honestly, that relic job doesn't look fake, which is why I like it.  I think you made the right decision.  I have two AV guitars, a 52 with 51 Nocaster pickups and a 64.  Between the two, the 64 feels and sounds and plays like a tele---bright, chimey/jangley, loose-ish.  On the other hand, the 52 took some getting used to.  That neck is a monster.  I have to run 9-46 strings on it, which helped tremendously.  Soundwise, it's its own thing.  Still a tele, but a bit harder.  I swapped the "Twisted Tele" pickups it came with for the 51 Nocaster set and it really suited the guitar.

That 51 is cool, but it has the tell tale belt sander across the hips thing that kills most relics for me, and which your 63 doesn't have.

That’s cool, the nocaster had a great tone.  Not sure what pickups were in it.  I wanted a Tele for the distinct bridge tone, but the neck pickup on this 63 and the nocaster were some of the best I’ve ever heard on any guitar.  All warm and buttery.  They weren’t identical in tone, but they were both exceptional and it really came down to the neck and I could imagine my hand getting fatigued faster on the nocaster.

I’m just happy the relic job on the ‘63 I got wasn’t heavy handed.

A certified bad ass twanger is my guess.  Those look like the Buck Owens/Buddy Rich telecasters Fender made back in the day.

As long as we're talking Buck Owens...

If you're ever find yourself in Bakersfield, CA, don't miss the Chrystal Palace. Restraint, Bar, Venue, and Buck Owens Museum. The pictures I took a few years back are on another computer (this is from Google) but they have pretty much all Buck's shit on display there. Aside from 21 consecutive #1 hits, that dude built quite an empire of radio stations.

Included is this Telecaster, the last one Leo ever personally built before he passed. Thensilver sparkle ones are there too.

Incredible place.

Damn Foggy.  That dude is clean.  I need to find something like that to just leave in open tuning for Stones songs.  A buddy found a MIM Thinline for $75 at a pawn shop recently.  He put $70 in it on a setup and it plays like a dream.  I've NEVER found any guitar worth a shit at a pawn shop.

I’ll play. Here’s my latest Tele. Picked this one up a couple days ago. It’s a MIM Classic 50s reissue.

Craigslist? Facebook Marketplace? I think I saw that one and actually said to myself, "Foggy is going to pick that up."

Yep, it’s probably the one you saw. Got it on Craigslist. Came with a hardshell Fender case and upgraded with Texas Special pickups. You know me well, Deej!

And Hulla, it’s pretty clean but not as clean as it appears. A previous owner had tried to relic the poly paint job by taking some steel wool to the body to take off the shine and also put a buncha deep scratches all over the body. I used some rubbing compound, scratch and swirl remover and polish to bring it back to a nice shine, but some of the scratches are still visible if you look closely. It plays great and I got it for a great price so I don’t mind the bumps and bruises.

I’m a sucker for vintage appointments on Fender guitars.

I think I'm joining Team (Mexican)Tele in the very near future. I dig this "Tidepool" color with the maple neck and humbuckers.

Where are you located? I saw this exact same guitar for sale in San Antonio a couple days ago. Guy wants $600 for it, says it’s brand new, still has stickers on it and plastic on the pickguard.

I imagine there are a few out there if it was some kind of "Deal of the Day" special, Adorama, etc.  People (ahem) sometimes snap up the really good deals on new gear and wait a few months to flip them.

"People".  (Personally, I wouldn't know anybody who would do that.  No sir.)

I have a Epi 339 that I LOVE playing.  I use it mostly in a group that plays a lot of Elvis tunes (lead singer sounds JUST like Elvis), Buddy Holly, Tom Jones, Bill Withers, Hollies music.  I'm thinking about replacing the pickups.  I've never replaced pickups in any guitar as I've always been happy and would rather buy new toys/guitar/pedals than swap out pups, but I think the time is right.

Right now, I'm leaning towards Classic 57s.   Anyone have any other ideas/suggestions?   Also, what else will I need to change when I do this?  Caps/pots?  Right now this guitar has a coil splitting setup that is essentially useless.  It goes from an OK/acceptable tone to a hollow/thin sounding mess and I'm really not interested in that capability anyway.   At least I don't think I am.

What ya got?

All chrome for me.  I need to build a parts Tele, standard pickup config, not sure on body or neck yet.  Pickguard will always be some pearl variation -- Mother of Toilet Seat or black, since my G&L Tribute ASAT has tortoiseshell.

Wonder what a black pearl pickguard would look like on a pastel body?  Might be great on some kind of red or orange version.  I gotta get some color in the collection, my top two electrics are white.

Just buy some compensated brass saddles and swap them out. That's what I did on my Esquire. And installed a SD Broadcaster pickup.

I’m a fan of the compensated saddles as well. I’ve put them on several Squier Classic Vibe Teles over the years, and the 50s Tele I just got already had a set of them too.

Would that work on NoHarley’s guitar though? Looks like his Tele has a six saddle bridge.

Just change the bridge. It ain't hard to swap shit around on a Tele. Six saddle bridges are sacrilege, anyway.

Latest murderers row from the buddy who worked up the last LP deal. These are all original vintage instruments but for the ‘89 Silver Jet RI and the ‘72 Black Beauty LP RI.

Whenever I hear of something like this, I think of Willie's advice to Kinky Friedman about gambling:

Quote

“Willie,” I said, “everybody seems to be worried about me. They all say I’m turning into a gambling addict. They say I have to stop gambling now or I’ll blow everything.”

“Kinky,” he said, “your friends are wrong. Get as much money as you can so you can go back to Vegas and gamble more. Sell or mortgage your house if necessary. Do what you have to do.”

Buying and selling guitars is just a kind of gambling.  It's what you want to do, so go on and do it.

I want A Noel Gallagher j-150. 4600 tho :/ I can’t bring myself to sell anything but I know they will be worth a shit load because of the limited run

Gibson has really stumbled onto something selling $2k guitars for $4600, or $5k guitars for $10k when they're "murphy aged" or "Jimmy Page" or whatever the hell.  I suppose if the market will bear it.

Simply put? The lure of the original burst. That’s it, nothing else needed. It is for those of us who can’t pony up the $400,000 to buy a real one. But are foolish enough to believe a redo will scratch that itch.

it is seriously like someone inception'd me or something.  usually i am completely irrational and stupid about buy production software, virtual instrument plugins, a billion different reverbs...  for fuck's sake, i could buy a brand new ferrari for the price i've paid on my different solo violin legato samples.

but i woke up one day, thought to myself, i need a sunburst les paul.  and it has been a seed that has been getting nurtured in quite liberally in my subconscious apparently.

which is weird because i suck at guitar.  but my subconscious is saying "that's just because you've never had a gibson les paul. if you get one, you will sound like prince doing the while my guitar gently weeps solo...obviously"

my very rational mind laughs heartily at such idiotic reasoning while my id hands over $2k for a sunburst les paul.
