Stopped at Guitar Center and checked out a $300 Alvarez acoustic that seemed really good for the money. I've been wanting a good acoustic that plays a lot better than my old Epiphone. I think it's this one...

I wouldn't mind spending 4 figures for a good American made guitar, or Mexico made with a wider nut width for my fat fingers. But this Alvarez might be worth settling for since the market is pretty dried up these days. Not too serious right now, though. I've got to start playing more again.

I’ll agree that’s a really nice guitar for $300. I took my GF’s nephew to Guitar Center last year to buy an acoustic. He had played a friend’s Taylor that he liked, so he went in biased towards Taylors. I made him play a bunch of guitars back to back. He ended up buying an entry level Taylor Academy 12e, but he really liked and almost bought this same Alvarez which was less than half the price of the Taylor.

Any of y’all ever played EMG’s in a Strat?

I just bought a Fender tweed case with an American Strat inside that is in pieces and needs to be put back together. Paid $275 for it. I was told that the original owner had taken it apart intending to repaint the body. Then he died.

The pickguard has a set of EMG’s in it. It needs to be reconnected to the output jack. I’ll get some pics up in a bit after I put it back together.

I would have already had bought a Taylor 114 or 214ce-ish by now if not for the narrower nut width. Even a 16th of an inch makes a difference for me. A lot like this new  keyboard that I suck even more at typing on now.

I haven't, but this dude has:

If they turn out to be the DG20 pickups in the loaded MoTS pickguard and you're looking to swap them out, holler at your boy.

For that price range, you should also look at the Yamaha FGX800 (dreadnought) or FSX800 (orchestra body) guitar.

I got a FS800 for my niece and it played really well for a beginner level acoustic.

The nutless ‘67 ES-330 saga is over.  I went to Wildwood yesterday and traded it for this Slim Harpo “Lovell” ES-330.  All of this was driven by the one that got away — a 2018 Memphis ES-330 I sold to buy my ES-335.  Nothing sounds like a good hollowbody thin line with P90s, and this delivers that maybe even better than the one I sold.  Pics below and you can hear its tone over in the share your music thread if you desire.

Yeah I figured if they’re good enough for Gilmour, they’re worth trying out. I don’t have the DG20 loaded pickguard. It looks like I’ve got a set of EMG SA’s which are the same as the ones in the DG20, but the DG20 has a boost in the circuit. I need to get a new 9V and study up some more on the wiring diagram before I try to reconnect the electronics. (Apparently there’s no ground wire connection to the the trem claw with active pickups?)

I assembled the guitar just to see how it all fit together. Every piece connected to the body was in a bag. It’s a 2009 Highway 1 with the thin satin finish that wears pretty quickly. Body is light and resonant with some good mojo. This neck has jumbo frets and came with a set of locking tuners which I’ve never used before.

@Goredho That’s a striking 330. Tell us more. Not being too familiar with Slim Harpo, what are the specs on this one? I’m assuming it’s based on a particular year model?

Thanks, and I agree.  I keep wanting to flip over and look at the back.  Plays and sounds just as good as it looks.

So Gibson did a limited run in 2021.  The Wildwood guys told me only 100 were distributed in North America.  Its not a reissue or VOS, so I don’t think that it’s modeled after a specific year, but it’s got a larger nut (1.7”) and a neck somewhere between my R8 (fat) and my 60s standard (skinny), which means it’s specced like an es-330 between 1959 and 1964 which also had black plastic vs chrome/nickel pickup covers.  1965 is when they started having narrow 1 9/16” nuts.  Full specs for this guitar are on Gibson’s site.

Original MSRP was like $2999, but the two I see listed on reverb are priced over $4000, so they seem like they are going to appreciate somewhat?  At that price, you aren’t far from the cost of an early 60s es-330, so if you want a 330, you might consider that, too, but do your due diligence about years and specs.  This all worked out for me, but I made a quick buy of that 67 330 without validating the specs and almost got stuck with a really expensive wall decoration.

Here is a Gibson hype video that’s not embedding for some reason that explains who Slim Harpo was and talking about the guitar a bit (I had not heard of him before)

Yup. My first real guitar was my late 60s SG Jr with a P90 in the bridge. I bought it for $300 cuz it had a repaired headstock break which is still stable almost 30 years later. That shop in east Texas had a late 60s 330 in cherry that I still think about. I don’t recall how much they wanted for it then. It was probably under a grand, but that was a lot more money than 18-year-old me had in his pocket.

I want a p90 guitar.

Specifically a sunburst Stratosonic Dove II. But they never show up for sale in sunburst. Only red. Or Dove I in Sunburst.

I mean I get the sunburst but this one is just RIGHT HERE, waiting for you. And I think the black headstock is pretty righteous.

Bogey is that the Platinum Room?

It’s a small guitar shop called Detroit Guitar in Birmingham MI. Very classy place. They want just under $4700 for it. The PRS display case is awesome.
