How to appeal to reluctant Trump voters?

Hugo Stiglitz

The thing is Bernie wouldn’t placate. He would do what Bernie does and it would be more than enough.

Authenticity carries so much more weight than ideology or policy in today’s politics.

Imagine having an authentic candidate with sound ideology and policy.

There are most certainly people that voted for Trump looking for a new team to jump on.  I’m not talking about placating or compromising with them.  I’m talking about selling them something they can be persuaded to buy and help sell.

This isn’t something a candidate should try to run in the primaries, keep building a movement from the democratic base and look to expand it in a general election strategy.

I think everyone calling them out on their bullshit makes them want a new team. They wanted a show and got it and now don't like being called out. Those people aren't going to be a base for anything though

Anyone even considering voting for him after the last 3 years isn’t worth it.

And I’m so tired of hearing why the shitty decisions of Trump voters is the fault of people who oppose Trump. And being asked to bend and moderate to placate their retrograde viewpoints. And no one expects them to compromise.

Just ignore them and wait for them to die of old age or diabetes or heart disease or opioid overdose.

This is correct. Some voters who were reluctant in 2016 were corporatist Republicans who will vote for him again because red team. They are already counted in the equation. This thread should not be about them.

A different, maybe smaller group of Trump voters should be the focus: independents who gave him a chance in 2016 but who then proceeded to turn on him and his party in 2018. I see no reason why these people would swing back around and vote for him again.

The 538 polling shows a precipitous double digit drop in his approval in his first couple months in office, from which he has never recovered.

One thing's for sure, we're going to have to devise a plan to test them afterwards to make sure they're fully rehabilitated.

And I'm just spitballing here, but since many of them are good Christians I suggest an Ordeal by Water.  If they sink then they were truly reformed.  If they float, they are liars and should be hung for treason.

You want to see what happens when the left gets angry?

You should read up on the French and Russian revolutions. I would suggest the right calms the fuck down and stops acting like a bunch of racist assholes.

You offer candidates who aren't pushing more and more to the left of center.

The vast majority of the candidates are left of center. The Democratic establishment lived on the left side of a duplex next to the GOP before Trump invited everyone over for an ethno-nationalist party far down the right side of the street at his double-wide trailer.

The GOP went way too the Right with Trump, being left of Nationalism isn't veering from the center-left. Conservativism looks nothing like it did 10 years ago.

On this week’s podcast, Will discusses his new book, “The Conservative Sensibility,” and says that the sensibility as he defines it is currently “in the ranks of the homeless.”

“It’s a persuasion without a party, which is fine,” he says. “It may have to hope that the Republican Party, when it ceases being a cult surrounding the particular personality of the 45th president, that it will snap back. I’m not sure it will. But for the moment, it is homeless.”

Exactly.  They attacked a gay journalist in Andy Ngo because he wasn’t their brand of crazy.  Maybe they should keep calling everyone they disagree with racists.  That seems to be a winning strategy.

Y’all are leaving one group of voters out. The low information voter that doesn’t know anything about 90% of the stuff we argue on here about. They probably won’t decide until a couple of weeks before the election. A lot of these people were the “hell, I’ll give trump a shot” types and they may do it again. They don’t have a mental list of all of trumps insanity since taking office. They probably know that he tweets a lot but could give you very few specifics.

My theory is that they really don’t pay much attention to online or tv advertising but could be swayed by a person talking to them or the candidate coming to their area. The lack of ground game and HRC avoiding certain states probably hurt her with these people.

Those are the voters that can decide the election and there is more of them than you realize. They’ve probably heard a lot of bad stuff about Trump but don’t realize what a con man he is, and believe all the bickering is just politics. When they hear free college for all, Medicare for all and no private insurance, cancellation of student debt, and reparations they will get very concerned. These are very complicated topics so the Democratic candidate better be able to describe their policies in a way that doesn’t cause the low information voter to just say screw it and default to Trump again.

Oh yay. Let’s turn another thread into a fucking Bernie thread.

Y’all should just stop asking questions you won’t like the answer to. Anyone else who doesn’t think Bernie is the simplest and best answer to these questions feel free to chime in and offer another option. We have a few but Warrens on the record. That’s admirable.

At least we are at the point where we can ask the right questions about how to fix this country. I’ll take it. For now. The next step put your personal shit aside and make the clear choice for the betterment of everyone not just you personally.

It is obvious most of you have never had to deal w the things Bernie fights for. Makes it easy to shrug and say maybe maybe not I’d rather save money on my taxes. No healthcare, crippling student debt, lives destroyed for nuggets of grass, families put in crisis due to deportation, a shit wage etc etc. I could prob think of some more. These things have stopped negatively affecting my life personally but the experience of living with them will never go away. I wouldn’t wish it on a Trump supporter and it’s why I don’t write them off. People do some fucked up shit when in a state of stress and their backs are up against the wall.

I didn’t ask any question when Bernie is the answer.

And there are like four other threads for y’all to jerk your chicken over Bernie.

This thread was asking HOW to reach “reluctant Trump voters” - not which candidates can possibly reach them.

There are multiple people who support other Democrat candidates that posted in this thread and none of them used this thread to cape for their gal or guy.

Just y’all. Because y’all make everything about Bernie.

Seems like y'all are conflating Trump voter and Trump supporter.

There are no reluctant Trump supporters.

The reluctant Trump voter is someone that voted for Trump in 2016 because "muh Hillary" but has since lost patience with him.  These people do exist and some of them post here.

Okay.  Then they should vote for the Democrat who will not be Hillary.

The issue is they want to be COURTED and demand that the Democrats MODERATE and run as GOP-lite to get their votes.  Then they bitch both parties are "the same"

You know all the rhetoric about open borders and socialism is just a ploy to scare you into not voting for a democrat right?  Aren’t you tired of the bullshit?  Wouldn’t it be nice if we aspired to something other than destroying the other side?

Yeah, this is why this approach will never work. It's ingrained that democrats are evil baby killing socialists, so Trump it is. They are literally justifying his racist comments because "they" started it by being socialist and stuff.

Let's stop playing around. THEY. ARE. UNREACHABLE.

Someone said it earlier. Trump got fewer votes than Hillary, they just need a swing in a few states. And you're not going to get any Trump voter to change their mind. You need to find the non-voters from 2016 who are disgusted with Trump to actually vote this time. The people who said "Trump and Hillary are the same." No, they are not. Even if you hate "both sides" only Trump will be an undignified vile racist that ruins our country's reputation. You may hate policies on both sides, but how about actually voting to ensure a modicum of dignity for our country?

You didn’t ask the question only bothered when someone answers Bernie. Why does it bother you? I know the question was HOW. I answered it very simply Bernie bc an old white man who understands their poor or middle class white struggles is how you reach reluctant Trump voters. Why is that bothersome or confusing?

The multiple people who support other candidates can’t say their candidates name bc they are shit answers to the questions being asked. Please make the case for Beto. Make the case for anything.

Sadly this is mostly true.

The best outcome is to motivate the non-voters from 2016 to come to the polls. There is a large contingent of Obama voters that disliked both Hillary and Trump and just stayed home. Get some of these fools out to vote in 2020 and the 3 states that matter will turn.

Trying to get disenfranchised voters to the polls would be easier if you gave them someone who didn’t make them disenfranchised in the first place. Anyone trying to get people to the polls who didn’t vote in 2016 would benefit from having idk a real fucking candidate who is all about the traditionally disenfranchised voter. I don’t think the reference is oblique. Agree to disagree.

Don't. Write them off. They can go fuck themselves.

this is, of course, the correct answer.

these so-called "reluctant" voters use analysis that will forever box them in to voting trump.

"well, i don't like some of the things he does, but the supreme court is important to me, because that's generational."

"well, i am not his biggest fan, but he's better than voting in a socialist liberal!"

"well, i won't vote for trump, but i ain't voting for someone who wants socialist healthcare"

"the democratic candidate supports post-birth abortion!"

these things do not even have to be true. my father-in-law would be the supreme court rationale. all other things are secondary.

you will not appeal to these people, because while they pretend they are "reluctant," such as your slorches or onboards, ultimately, to them, trump is better than the great liberal satan.

fuck them. they support racist piece of shit for president.

you're better off appealing to younger voters and working a robust GOTV effort.

hell, even those who claim on this board that they didn't vote for trump (as an actual gary johnson voter, i do not believe any of them), somehow manage to support him by either:

  • deflecting or explaining away his racism
  • but hillary or obama
  • trashing liberal policies

OF COURSE, they allegedly didn't vote for this shitstain of a president, but they always support him through dissembling and misdirection.

it's uncanny. they will NEVER EVER vote for a democratic candidate.
