Mike Roach: Longhorns add four-star QB Jalen Milroe to 2021 recruiting class

July has been a red-hot month for the Longhorns. In the past few weeks, Texas landed commitments from Highland Park outside linebacker Prince Dorbah, Lake Travis tight end Lake McRee, Cy Ridge defensive lineman Vernon Broughton and Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon defensive lineman Van Fillinger.

The 2021 class added a third member today as Jalen Milroe announced his commitment to the Longhorns. The four-star quarterback from Katy Tompkins chose the Longhorns over offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Oregon, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Virginia Tech and Houston. Milroe joins a 2021 class that already includes two pass-catchers in four-star 2021 Dallas Skyline wide receiver Quaydarius Davis and Lake Travis tight end Lake McRee. Milroe camped at Texas over the summer where he earned his offer.

The Longhorns continued their trend of securing their quarterback commit more than a year in advance of their senior season. Milroe provides Texas with a high-ceiling athlete at the quarterback position with advanced passing ability. He’s also a well-known prospect in the Houston area who could be influential to landing several others. Most notably, Milroe is teammates and close friends with four-star defensive end Tunmise Adeleye.

The Longhorns now go into the fall with three important offensive positions covered as they look to build on the recent classes signed under Tom Herman. Milroe competed at The Opening regional in Houston where he clocked a 4.64 40, 4.38 shuttle, and a 35-inch vertical. At 6-foot-1.5, 194 pounds, Milroe is ranked as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the nation for the class of 2021 and No. 11 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

Texas finished with the No. 3 recruiting class last cycle, highlighted by big-time out-of-state recruits like four-star tight end Brayden Liebrock, four-star linebacker De'Gabriel Floyd and four-star wide receiver Jake Smith. The Longhorns also had success in-state, landing five-star athlete Jordan Whittington and four-star offensive lineman Tyler Johnson. Texas also finished with a Top 3 class in the 2018 cycle as the Longhorns brought in a historic defensive back haul. It was Herman's first full recruiting cycle at Texas.

Herman helped lead Texas to a 7-6 record and a win in the Texas Bowl in his first season with the program. That marked the program's first winning season since 2013 and first bowl win since 2012 under then head coach Mack Brown.

Herman followed that up by leading the Longhorns to a 9–3 regular season record and a berth in the Big 12 Championship Game, which was the program's first since 2009. Texas then knocked off Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, which clinched the first 10-win season for the Longhorns since 2009, and made a huge statement on the recruiting trail. Herman is under a five-year contract with a base salary of $5 million per year.

At last, the Garret Gilbert Decision (nothing against Gilbert; it was Mack) is righted. A room full of great QB prospects many of whom can play other positions.

May the best man win.

Welcome to the University!

The thought of having to choose the better of two QBs scares you to death.

I had already heard about the commitment and read a couple of the articles, but just now took the time to watch his video. I generally skip these, but this one is worth it--you can tell the opportunity means a lot to him and his family. Hopefully this is a great sign considering how far out we are from the class of 2021.
