Henry To'oto'o to Bama'.  It's hilarious they think they'll beat them this year, they return everyone on defense minus Surtain, Barmore, and Moses.  And they arguably just upgraded Moses's spot.

Yep - Moses was talented as hell but perpetually injured.

I am interested to see just how Alabama's offense goes - with a new QB (albeit another 5 star) and BOB coordinating it...   Unlikely as it may be, there is a chance that ends up a train wreck.

Their defense will be better but their offense will be worse for sure. Still good enough to drill aggy and most of their regular season schedule though.

O'Brien costs Bama a playoff game this year and Saban quickly cuts the cancer out after the season. This is my bold prediction for the 2021 season.

Bob's offense is harder for QBs to grasp than Jimbo's. The only QB that had real success in it was Brady. Though this will probably be the best OL he's had given the level of competition since that undefeated team that lost to the Giants, and even then that OL was destroyed by the Giants DL.

People really overrate the effect O’Brien will have. That offense is loaded and they might have the best offensive line coach in all of football. O’Brien won’t be creative or flashy, but they’ll still dominate. And that easy schedule A&M benefits from applies to Bama too. Their toughest games are Miami, at Florida (who loses a ton) and  at A&M. They’re extremely unlikely to lose more than one game outside of maybe a QB injury.

Yeah they have two really good TEs (Latu and Billingsley), a really good receiver in Metchie, a few promising young receivers (Agiye Hall, Earle, and Christian Leary), and two good RBs (Robinson and McClellan) plus a rehabbing Trey Sanders and Camar Wheaton. They'll have another great offense; it should be top 5 in total stats and efficiency metrics.

Doug Marrone certainly has a great resume, but I didn't know he's a great OL coach. I say this with no snark. Is he really that good?

Regardless, though it's hard, you can screw up such a talented team. Let us hope they try to replicate the worst parts of Houston's 2020 offense (averaged < 20 ppg under O'Brien) and the Jaguars 2020 offense.

Think he meant the loser of the position battle. Don't shoot me if you were joking and it went over my head. That goes for the rest of you fuckers as well.

Yeah, he's run off the majority of the players he inherited including a lot of his transition class. They may need a few more transfers, but it's not like he will be running off bread at many positions. He needs all the cubes along the OL. They are going to be hurting there.

That thread is full gold comments but this one was hilarious
Despite Baylor and TCU having more success last season, and Baylor being more successful over the past two seasons, Texas Tech is the premiere program in the state.

It's more than just wins and losses. Tech first of all is set to lead the nation in tortillas thrown this year. That's big, and our fanbase is massive. We also just signed a multi million dollar deal with Misson tacos. Texas Tech plays on national TV each week, sometimes on ABC, which translates into a lot of eyeballs and TV ratings making them a national brand.

Then there is battery throwing. We continue to dominate recruiting the best battery thrower rankings which validates what our program has become and shows that jerk students want to be here. I feel like recruiting is HUGE when it comes to the influence and footprint of a program, because it either validates or rejects what your program is. The fact that we are doing so well in recruiting PROVES that our program is a big one that the best want to be associated with. If Baylor and TCU were truly marquee programs they would be pulling in the state's top assholes.

Baylor and TCU may have had 11 and 12 win seasons, conference titles, and played in a big bowl, but they aren't Texas Tech. They don't have the fanbase, they don't have the attendance, they don't play on the big networks and have the TV ratings and aren't big TV draws which makes them a regional brand at best. They also lack the recruiting pull that Tech has.

I would compare it to the sun glasses. Texas Tech is the Ray Ban - a big brand. We always hear about how new glasses are "Ray Ban Killers" but never kill the Ray Bans. While these Ray Ban killers may be more impressive pieces of eye protection that are more powerful and functional, the Ray Bans still outsells them big time. Baylor and TCU are those Ray Ban killers. They may be better on the field, but in the big picture, adding in factors like attendance and recruiting and TV ratings, they don't stack up. Texas Tech is the brand name.

I'd rather win 4 to 9 games every year and yet be tops in the nation in tortilla throwing, battery thrower recruiting, and national recognition, than win 11 games and have limited appeal. It's more about wins/losses, its about the program's footprint as a whole which is more than just wins and losses.
I really like Bryce Young, think he's going to be really good. The wild card is BoB and how he does as a playcaller.

Matthews is also injury prone/always missing time so don't surprised to see someone like Chibuzo or ??? at Center some.

Wykoff has been getting a lot of work at C. It's clear that fucker Henson knows what he's doing and is doing his best to counter every single terrible instinct Jimbo has the OL spot and is working to get a more athletic unit prepared even as Jimbo continues to try and toss cubes and projects into his path.

Someone needs to give him an OC title this offseason so Jimbo can reunite with Trickett

Tarp with the post-spring OL summary ::

Quote

The offensive line was protected via the play calling in the spring game via misdirection, RPOs, and play action. When they were given leverage opportunities via down blocks, etc. they were adequate. They weren’t tasked often with inside zone or having to hold blocks for extended periods in pass protection (and when they were things got problematic). That modus operandi probably should be extended into the fall not just for the benefit of the quarterbacks but the offense as a whole.

As a group, you saw all of things that you normally see from an inexperienced line…the inability to sustain blocks, inconsistency in targeting the right folks, missing someone or turning them loose too early, etc. You’ve heard of run fits (on defense) but the unit also allowed gaps to open up between blockers (not keeping their heads up or shoulders square, not handing people off smoothly like they did in 2020) and front seven defenders to come down from the backside and generate tackles for loss. They’ll get better at these things only via live game action. Thus, they won’t be where you want them to be for while into the season.

A&M’s offense was built last year around their ability to run inside zone, not just via combo blocks, but their capacity to push interior defenders back off of the line of scrimmage and into the backers. That may not be the case in 2021 and the play calling may have to reflect that reality.

To the players…

I thought Aki Ogunbiyi was pound for pound the best guy up front. He’s slimmed down and moves much better. You can pull him to the opposite side of the formation and he’s going to get there relatively quickly and stay on track doing so. He’s much improved at getting to the second level. His feet allow him to stay in front of people and he keeps them moving after contact. Ogunbiyi understands how to anchor, get his hands up, and control people with them in pass pro.

Kenyon Green is making the transition from the interior to the edge and it’s not a seamless one since he hasn’t played out there consistently in two years. He’s used to making contact and using his size to push someone back but now he has to stay in front of them in space, keep his feet moving, and keep his hands up. The tools are there and it’s interesting to see him get to the second level of the defense on his feet much of them time. As he gets more familiar with where defenders will be, he’ll make more contact with them down the field. He’s got to learn to not overextend himself in pass pro to the edge and again the confidence to do that will come with experience. He was better and better as the spring game went on.

Layden Robinson was better when he was working on combo blocks and double teams. He’s a phone booth kind of player. He needs to improve his lateral movement and pad level so that he doesn’t overextend his upper body as run blocker and pass protector. In addition, he’s really handsy at times which means that while he can grab people he’s doing it because he’s not where he needs to be in the block as opposed to doing it from a position of strength.

Matthew Wykoff was solid at center. He normally faced an even front without a nosetackle and was able to help out and avoid one on one situations. He battled with defenders and didn’t give up on blocks like some of the others did. He needs to work on his hands, etc. and it would be interesting to see where he’s at facing a one tech.

Josh Bankhead was facing undersized guys up front but understands how to anchor, win with his hands inside, keep his feet underneath him, and stalemate defenders. Nothing happened when he was in one on one situations which is what you want to see.

Blake Trainor has the issues you associate with tall tackles and these are much the same as those we saw with Carson Green….if you can’t move your feet adequately or you expose your breastplate to defenders due to your height, then defenders can generate leverage with their hands or pad level. As a result, you give ground too often, you can’t mirror people in pass pro, you play out over your toes, or you get turned too often. I think he is an adequate down blocker in the running game but he has to really perfect his technique and awareness in order to have the same level of play with regard to other elements of his game.

how many times in history has an "adequate" OL won a national championship?

what about an SEC divisional title in the last say 10 years?

what about any game vs Alabama in the last say 10 years?

an adequate OL is a killer, spoken by someone who has dealt with adequate at best OL over the last how many years?

I believe CTJ has a great writeup on Clemson's decade of OL adequacy on here somewhere.

Tarp moves on to the LB group - post-spring. Tarian Lee is up to 245 pounds? Yeesh. Aggy rotated just 5 players (this is what they get for not carrying 15) -- which makes this take even funnier to me, deepest and most talented this century...  ::

Texas A&M’s linebacker corps has gradually gotten better in recent years, especially when Jimbo Fisher and then Mike Elko arrived in College Station. They began to stockpile defensive linemen and especially interior defenders, and also got more out of those guys on the roster than the previous staffs did. Because the Aggies got bigger and deeper on the front line, they were able to protect the guys at the second level of the unit and their numbers in terms of tackles and tackles for loss instantly got better (as did the defense’s rushing numbers).

You saw this in the spring game when the White backers went for 16 tackles and four tackles for loss while the Maroon defense’s Aaron Hansford had five tackles to go with three pass breakups. This is a unit that can flow to the ball, read blocks to shoot gaps, and take note of where their help is and where the quarterback’s eyes are going.

The biggest concern is a lack of proven depth. A&M really rotated just five players at the two positions in the spring game with Andre White (projected as the starter alongside Hansford) out.

Aaron Hansford played linebacker in his first three years of high school ball, went to receiver both as a senior and at Aggieland, and then transitioned back to linebacker. When starter Anthony Hines opted out right before the 2020 season started, it took Hansford a little while to settle into consistent playing time. He’s always been a straight line player but he’s more knowledgeable in the passing game which allowed him to get a jump on the ball (benefits of having a sixth year player around) moving east and west. Also, he’s still got to get better at shedding blocks.

It’s not a question of whether or not Edgerrin Cooper will be in the starting lineup…it’s a question of when. No one in the unit closes like he does and while he’s a little light at 215 pounds he is getting better at being where he needs to be. If you give him a gap to shoot he’s through it in a hurry. However, he’s not going to be able to shed bigger people at this stage of his career in the run game and he can be redirected pretty easily.

Antonio Doyle is still learning the nuances of pass coverage and not taking false steps that might take him out of position. His strength is his ability to play downhill versus the run and so the spring game format and play calling wasn’t to his advantage. He also needs to play less upright and stay lower when it’s time to move from diagnosing to making a play.

Tarian Lee was considered one of the defense’s most improved players in the spring and is now up to 245 pounds. However, he still needs to be able to read routes better and get in the passing lanes. He did close a couple of times on outside plays but needs to play with his feet under his pads and stay in a football position to speed up his reactions.

Chris Russell didn’t show up on the stat sheet (and neither did Lee for that matter). He seemed to be in position for the most part, moved well laterally, and cut down on angles for the quarterbacks to get the ball to backs on pass routes.

Asked about his Bama comments in private, Fisher admitted, “These fucking rubes paid me $75M guaranteed. I have to put on a good show. I’ll continue to take the air out of the ball and score meaningless late game TDs to keep the scores somewhat reasonable but everyone knows  we’re not beating fucking Saban. Cmon man.”
