You need to get out more if you think one shopping center constitutes Austin’s “Chinatown”.  Truthfully, Austin doesn’t have one strip, or compact geographic area  which would be called a Chinatown.

However, the northern quadrant of the city is home to the vast majority of Austin’s Asian population, and their associated markets, restaurants, etc.  It just so happens to be more spread out, and thus not as noticeable.

Its also worth noting Austin has the highest percentage of it’s population identifying as Asian of any of the large Texas cities,  And Asians are also the fastest growing group in Austin.

“Asians in Austin are the fastest growing demographic group, doubling roughly every 12 years. Asian Americans comprise 8% of the City of Austin's population and this ranking puts Austin 9th in the country.”

This thread is going about how I thought it would. Funniest thing I've read so far is "Houston doesn't have an identity." Lulz.

Grew up in Houston, lived in SF for 8 years, and now Chicago for 4 so I can offer some perspective here. Houston lacks any sort of unique identity that makes it stand out - much of this is due to how new the city is, but also the fact that it's kind of a hodge podge of sprawl interconnected by 8 lane freeways. In that sense, it's a lot like Dallas and Kansas City.

SF has its steep hills, bay/bridge views, parks, and unique neighborhoods each with their own identity - North Beach, Russian Hill, Pac Heights Haight, etc.

Chicago has solid character with the Lake Michigan and skyscraper backdrop, beaches, historic neighborhoods (Lincoln Park, Gold Coast, Ukrainian Village, Old Town, Greektown, etc), Wrigleyville on Cubs gamedays, and superior walkability.

LA - incredible weather, hot ass, nightlife, and beaches

San Diego - weather, beaches, craft beer

Portland- food trucks, scenery, weed, outdoors

Seattle - Puget Sound, outdoors, Lake Washington, Mt Rainier, San Juan, weed etc

Denver - Rocky mountains, skiing, beer

New Orleans - French quarter, Garden District, food, Lake Ponchartrain, partying

Las Vegas - the Strip, casinos, nightlife

Food trucks as a thing that I people need to come to Portland. You didn't even say craft breweries.

Didn't even put Fort Worth on this list.

This is one of the dumbest fucking posts I've ever read on this site.

Imagine thinking Austin has more of an Asian population than Houston or Dallas. Laughing my fucking ass off.

Since you like numbers, there are almost as many Asian Americans in Plano than Austin.

I live on Fairview and Waugh. There are at least 10 bars and at 15 good places to eat within a 15 minute walk. Midtown and downtown are a short bike ride away.

We’re practically neighbors. There are weekends we don’t touch our cars because we just walk everywhere.

I should comment that Houston is a shithole, but I really don't have an opinion about it, because I haven't spent enough time there.  St. Louis is a shithole, so this hits close to home.

I love Houston.  It will always be home.  I usually make it back a couple of times a year.  I’m always happy to get off the plane in Houston, but I’m also always happy to get on the plane back to San Diego after a few days.

Been in Houston 20+ years.  The Loop has exploded over the past 10, with the Heights going thru a major overhaul now. The burbs are also getting much better with entertainment districts.  I recall when chili’s and Olive Garden with a few pappas options seemed to be the only non-fast food.  Now you have restaurants with good food and atmosphere.

The problem in Houston now are some the areas between the Loop and suburbs. There are exceptions but these areas are either not thriving or slowly redeveloping.  Spring branch, some galleria and GOOF are the exceptions that come to mind.

I was born in Houston and raised in its burbs. 31 of my 43 years I lived in Houston, the rest in Austin, DC, and Brazil. Houston is a great city. It’s also a shitty city. We covered a lot of ground in this thread:

"Houston is a great city. It’s also a shitty city." - best post on this thread.  As someone in Houston, I agree wholeheartedly.  I love it and it sucks.

It's not your fault.

One day you with some help and a shit ton of therapy you might stop your self loathing.  You might even get to a point where you accept that where you came from isn't so low and that all those places aren't so lofty.  Then again, you may not.

Well if you Houston sufferers ever want to escape the bland coastal plain to a "Scenic Community," far north Fort Worth BFE is kinda cheap:

Scenic Community

I'd forgotten about this thread. That last picture has to be doctored; even with the poop water, the grass around aggy campus is never that green.

Meanwhile, you want to know what a real shithole city is? Drive around in Memphis for a while. THAT is a shithole.

Well, yeah... Most of Mississippi and Alabama only ever make money by selling each other used hubcaps.

I'm from Dallas.  I live in Dallas.  I have wasted much effort engaging in debates and fights over Dallas versus Houston for 30 someodd years.  Mostly in fun.

Houston is not a shithole.

For the first time in my life, though, I am questioning my definition or understanding of the term "shithole."  Some on this thread are using it as "asshole," anus, rectum, ringmeat, or turdcutter.  I have always considered it a hole full of feces, a place where people have shat.

Late 70's, buddy of mine in Galveston got his mom's Lincoln Towncar and 4 or 5 of us guys piled in that thing with a fat sack of weed and a case of beer. Cruised up to Houston and spend the evening just riding around 610, the entire loop. He wasn't a drinker so it was all good. Hardly a soul on the freeways then at night.
