Texas 2020 general election

I don’t recall the specific posters on the site who have mentioned their Gen Z teenage kid(s) being tuned into national politics, but the Texas Democratic Party is offering a volunteer program for high school kids or recent grads who may be interested. Or if they need service hours it could be a fun thing to do to meet like minded individuals their age. It’s part of the Texas Dem Party’s outreach to young voters

I received mine and my wife's vote by mail applications today.  Hopefully I won't need them, but good to have.  Gonna check that disability box if need be.

pretty sure you can't sit on that. I think the deadline is the 11th day before the election date you want to participate in. so, for instance, you'd need to get it in by the 1st of July (basically) to be eligible to vote in the runoff.

Ah, I was actually only thinking for November, but with the way things are spiking, maybe the runoff wouldn't be a bad idea either.

ETA:  from the application instructions:

If you are 65 or older or disabled, you may apply to receive all ballots by mail for a calendar year.  If you do not select any elections in Box 6a, your application will be considered an annual application.  If you submit an annual application for a ballot by mail, your application may be forwarded to other entities holding elections where you are a qualified voter.  This means that you may receive a ballot for those elections in addition to the ballots you requested with this application.

You are correct about the 11th day before the election date deadline.

That's not going to be a great venue after November, as I suspect Collin is going to follow so many other counties and go Democratic at the county level.

COVID spreading like crazy

oil prices in the shitter

most unlikeable incumbent president in recent memory who happens to share the same party as state leadership

economy is not good

all of these things seem to be a recipe for chaos. When your a political party who hasn’t won a statewide race since the early 90’s and has been pretty feckless in state for the last 30 years overall.  Chaos can be a good thing.

I’ve posted about it twice today, so three times won’t make me more annoying.

Anyone can vote by mail in Texas if they fill out the application for disability, which also covers any illness. If you and only you think your condition or illness will get worse as a result of showing up and staying in line, then you are correct in that determination and eligible to vote by mail. Election admins can’t research or look into your disability choice, and you do not have to list your illness or condition. Feel free to share this on every Texas based message board you may visit.

https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/forms/5-15f.pdf

Also, there will be curbside voting this year if you feel any symptoms.

https://www.votetexas.gov/voters-with-special-needs/

Curbside Voting

If a voter is physically unable to enter the polling place, he or she may ask that an election officer bring a ballot to the entrance of the polling place or to a car at parked at the curbside. After the voter marks the ballot, they will give it to the election officer, who will put it in the ballot box. Or, at the voter’s request, a companion may hand the voter a ballot and deposit it for him or her.

Eh. It was Cruz +6, Paxton +7, Potty Patrick +8, Abbott +19 in 2018. That's a lot of ground to cover. And I'm sure local incumbent GOPs are closer to the Abbott number.

It is more GOP than the state as a whole. If Collin County goes Democratic then Biden isn't just winning, he is winning by 5-10 points. That just isn't happening.

Yup....... focus still needs to be on making Tarrant county permanently blue and improving the margins in the major Texas counties.

It has been more Republican than the state as a whole, but I think people underestimate the speed with which it is changing.  Suburban women are breaking hard to the Democrats.  And in the meantime, you have more and more minorities moving into Collin County.

Early voting started today for the runoffs and will go for two weeks. You should get a pretty sweet finger condom for the touch screen

Yeah, I voted at the Burger Center this morning.  The machines are spread out over an entire basketball court.  Other than the guy behind the plexiglass that scanned my ID, I never got within ten feet of another person.  And since I was already in South Austin with a finger condom, guess whose mom I went to visit after voting?

They both recently polled at 10% deficits. They will be debating at 630 on KAVU and will be streamed on social media as well tonight

If you want a breakdown without visiting their own websites, the Tribune has an article below where they asked all the candidates In the primary their stances on a range of issues

Unfortunately due to republican voter suppression, I’m out I’d luck.   I am healthy and under 65. No vote by mail for me

No, you’re wrong. I need to be blunt and to the point cause I’ve posted it 74729261 times but we can’t get a sticky.

Election administrators cannot investigate Disability (which covers any illness). You as voter get to decide what disability or illness is. There is no wrong answer, you do not need to list any reason on the application. It’s just a check mark. If that hypothetical condition  they have no authority to review would become worse by standing in line, then you can check that box. Allergies get worse outside,?check the box. Chronic back pain, leg pain, knee or joint pain? Will it get worse standing in line? Check the box. Whatever you decide is an illness or disability, and can possibly get worse, you are eligible.

There is no doctor note required. You do not have to have some handicap sticker hanging from your car. You do not need hospital records. If you have any kind of illness or disability, you are the SOLE decision maker in that and can get a vote by mail ballot. They cannot investigate a claim based off a decision made in the 1981 Legislature. If you fill out the application correctly, they have to give you a ballot.

The creepy Dan Patrick probably has a bullseye on this for the next legislative session.

Ha. Thanks for being blunt. This is actually the first time seeing it.

I’ll get three printed out tomorrow. My trump hating wife and 64 year old mom were also worried and not going to vote.

Trump hating dad is over 65 and already had his in the mail.

I wouldn’t get worked up about these, mostly guilty of being not funny and the Editorial page was where Hot Takes originated. His opponent is polling within 4 points though

Bernie Sanders endorses Julie Oliver in TX-25

Not sure if this is actually helpful.  The people in the Austin part of TX-25 were already voting for her.  This might energize people in Stephenville and all the rural wasteland that might have just not voted to turn out for Williams.

Yeah, this feels like the Ohio endorse/don't endorse scene from "Veep."  She was gonna take the more progressive side of the Democratic Party anyway.  Now she'll be painted as a "Bernie Socialist Acolyte" and the usual ho-hum turnout for Roger Williams will be completely reinvigorated.  Maybe she needed it for fundraising.  I voted for her just to get my next-door neighbor to quit mentioning her to me everytime we saw one another in the street.

Lol.  My street is literally the dividing line between 25 and 10.  It trips me out that the people across the street have a different rep than me.

I'm a few hundred yards from 10.  Mopac as a border of the districts makes a lot more sense than some of the other borders.  But yeah, we're just barely in Williams'.  And we are just a stone's throw from Lamar Smith's old one (now Chip Roy).  We've supported Kopser in 2018 as a D in 21, and McCaul for 10 as an R since we know them, and Lamar Smith's old chief of staff is a neighbor.

But I wouldn't know Roger Williams if he bumped into me on the street, I have no idea what he looks like..  I don't think I've ever even gotten so much as a generic update mailer from him in all these years.  From everything I've gathered, he doesn't even bother with Austin in terms of fundraising or getting out the vote.  Maybe west of Walsh-Tarlton where the incomes go up as does the tendency to lean right.  We're in a more middle of the road zip code it seems.

In regards to the endorsement only helping her in Austin, that is true. With the rest of her district she had been doing the grunt work. Posting a question and her response from her AMA on reddit a couple months back to give a better idea

Are you going to try to tailor your positions to reach the people in between Dallas and Austin or just try to pump up the numbers as much as possible in the dark blue areas?

I'm talking to everybody and showing up everywhere (or at least before sheltering-in-place orders). And that means there are different issues that are important in different areas of this district. Healthcare as a right is universal across the district. But you also have Clean Water issues in Johnson County, where the Louis Vuitton plant is discharging its proprietary chemicals into the water system that eventually makes its way to the drinking supply. In Burnet County, it's Clean Air, where a rock crushing plant is releasing silica into the air, which is a harmful inhalant. In Hays County, the Kinder Morgan pipeline is claiming eminent domain to cut through acre-after-acre of private property for the natural gas pipeline that connects the Permian Basin to the Gulf Coast. High speed internet doesn't exist in many parts of this district. So I'm not sure if that quite answered your question, but it is indeed helpful to know what affects all the communities that make up TX-25.

Really proud that we've thrown out the playbook that says you have to slice and dice the electorate and carefully craft your message with some poll-driven, watered down wishy washy position that people will recognize as bullshit from a mile away.

For the last 3 years we've been barnstorming all over this district, into all 13 counties, no matter how red or blue or urban or rural, and showing up and listening to the people there about what *they* want to see for the future of Texas and this country.

And the responses are not so different than you would think.

These are my beliefs -- that every single person deserves to be able to make enough to support themselves and their family, that we should ensure that every person
