I think he was insinuating that the best players do not always play at Texas and there are political factors at work.  I don't think he was pushing race as that factor, but that Card is from Lake Travis and makes for a better story.

I don't necessarily believe it, but there have been people saying that Casey Thompson was better than Sam and never had a chance to win the job due to Sam's story.  I think Marcus Washington's dad made reference to players not being from Texas not being given the same opportunities as those from Texas.  Even Jeffrey McCulloch talked on the podcast about at other schools the best players were playing, but they weren't necessarily at Texas.

That definitely could be it

I think that may be what he means but that argument has never made any sense to me. Have we ever seen an out of state player that wasn't given the opportunity that an in-state guy had? Who would even care about that if we were winning? Maybe Washington's main problem is he drops about 1/3 of the passes that hit his hands?

Hicks, Beck, Collin Johnson (if he counts), Roach, Dickson, Poona, & Swaim all managed to get enough opportunity as out of state players to be on NFL rosters. Not to mention we literally put up a statue of guy who went to high school in California at DKR.

Triggered. Easily the dumbest thing Mack did in that game. I don't know how Harris would have done, but he was for damn sure better suited to play than Gilbert. God this still pisses me off 10+ years later. Mack is a dumb fuck for that move.

Spoiler

There’ll be a group of prospects taking a student trip to Austin this weekend. Namely 2023 Bai Jobe, four-star WDE in Oklahoma.

Also.. 2023 Morgan Pearson
2023 Erik McCarty
2022 Trudel Berry DB/Ath Baytown Lee
2022 Chase Faber LB

Jobe should be a national recruit.

If Darius had directed that solely at the fanbase then I would agree to an extent, people were already ready to anoint Card based on practice reports from the $9.95ers. Had he had the performance Casey had in the Alamo game in addition to that, I'd wager most of the fanbase would be wondering why Sark is even bothering with a QB competition or considering it a farce to keep Casey on the roster. But, the fanbase isn't calling the shots here, Sark is and I am not sure any coach would have just anointed Card the starter based on a half of football.

I've been a fan of Caseys and continue to be because I want him to kick OU's teeth in and end their Big 12 title rain. How sweet it would be. But either way both dudes can ball and this offense will put up points.

So, do we really think outside influences like boosters influence who’s the starting QB? If so, the coaches that are acquiescing to that are betas that shouldn’t be UT head football coach and I’m glad they’re gone. I think Sark is smart enough and has enough experience to keep these issues at bay. This isn’t McAllister little league. The people that are the best will play.

I guess this is where I show my naïveté, but it seems like Texas has had plenty of black QBs start at Texas in the last 25+ years, and they’ve all been well received and often celebrated. What’s the legitimate race angle? I’ve read Terrell enough to know that, even when I disagree with his evaluation, he has shit together. This seems absurd and the fucking premise should be rejected out of hand by anyone hearing or reading such nonsense.
Yeah fuck that noise. Donnie Little, James Brown, VY. All great representatives of the position. Donnie fucking moved to receiver, he was such a team guy. I reject this bullshit. There!

I read it as “Card has looked better to everybody involved, and the only thing making this a competition is that Casey is an upperclassman with a pretty damn good performance on tape.  If Hudson had the Alamo Bowl performance, that plus spring performance would render a competition irrelevant and he’d already be named starter.”

I may have read it wrong, though.  I’m just some asshole on Surly.

I did too but now I think he’s going the racialist route

DT does a podcast with a regular on this board, you all could just ask him instead of wildly speculating.

I do believe the majority of fans and 9.95ers are rooting for Card to win the job. Card is the local kid from Lake Travis and was a much higher ranked recruit. Thompson is an Oklahoman who wasn’t even the highest rated QB take in his own class.

I don’t think any of that affects this coaching staff though, they didn’t even recruit any of these kids. And if the local stuff affected them, they would’ve went after Klubnik instead of Murphy.

I'd prefer Thompson in terms of storyline bullshit. That's the only way we might get the chance to watch an OU legacy punk OU this year. I think Card will end up the better choice since he has a significantly better arm.

I don’t get the sense that the majority of fans are rooting for Card.  Most general fans outside of message boards probably have no idea who card is.  I think most Texas fans simply want to win regardless of QB.  Us fans on this message board know what shitty QB play looks like,  we’ve seen it most of the last decade.  We’ve also seen a new QB have a great game only to be mediocre as teams get more film ( Heard, Buchele).  I think most of us understand that one half from Casey doesn’t give us a full picture and we’re patiently waiting for this competition to play out into fall.  If Casey plays like he did in the Alamo Bowl on a regular basis, he’ll be starting and we’ll be competing for a national championship.  You won’t hear anybody calling for Card.  He truth is probably that Casey isn’t going to play like that every game.  That he’s a guy with experience, maturity, and hard work ethic.  And that he’s in a close competition with a very talented young QB. This is good for our program.  We need both of these guys to push one another.

The majority of fans are fucking morons and/or don't care much about the program outside of a few fall Saturdays.

Why would you root for one player over another in a position battle? Wouldn't you just want the best one? At this point, I trust our coach.

For a whole bunch of reasons - you identify with their story, they're from a place you like, they just seem like a nicer guy. Could be anything. Doesn't override wanting what's best for the team.

(Mike Roach) The Stampede: Recruiting scoop from the week in Houston

Spoiler

— If there’s a 2023 elite prospect I feel good about with Texas early on, it’s Katy Morton Ranch DE David Hicks. The Longhorns have always been a favorite for him as he grew up going to DKR with his father who coached former Longhorns Roderick Bernard and Jordan Elliott. Hicks is already a freakish prospect thanks to his size and ability to move, and he’ll only continue to grow. Texas did a good job of offering him early and will likely get him on campus a few times this summer, but they will have to outlast a few heavy hitters in the recruiting game. Texas A&M and Oklahoma are the local threats while national programs Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and Clemson are all vying for a place as well. This is one race Texas needs to win next year, and while they stand in a good position early, it’s going to be quite the battle.

— After talking with 2023 commit Rueben Owens, I think Texas is in for a fight with his recruitment. That isn’t to say I think he’s close to decommitting or even really pondering it at this point. It’s really just the fact that Owens’ commitment is only really starting once he’s able to make visits this summer. The Alabama offer certainly made an impact on him and he will make a trip to Tuscaloosa early in the summer. Owens will also make the trek to College Station at some point during the summer to see Texas A&M. Owens did say he’s looking forward to his Austin trip on June 13 to re-unite with Arch Manning and a host of other elite 2023 prospects. For Texas, Stan Drayton has been able to reach Owens and his family early on while Owens described his relationship with Brandon Harris as one of a big brother-little brother. We will see how things go this summer, but Texas has the chance to firm things up when he gets to Austin.

Spoiler

2023 FROM TEXAS

-2023 DL Markis Deal, Naaman Forest (Garland, TX)

It’s early, but the 6-foot-4, 270-pound four-star interior lineman has the Longhorns' attention.

“The Texas offer was great,” Deal said. “I had a great talk with with Coach Bo. (Texas) offered me at defensive tackle.”

He holds 10 offers including Syracuse, Oklahoma State, and Tulane, where his brother Devean plays tight end. He hears from Arizona State, Kansas, and SMU the most, and is ready for a recruitment unaffected by COVID.

“It’s been great,” Deal said about his recruitment. “The restrictions with COVID and being a sophomore have been tough.“

Deal, who tallied 26 tackles, five tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks in 2020, hopes to see some campuses this summer. Austin included.

Finding defensive linemen in-state for 2023 has been a chore, but Deal might be legit.

2023s FROM OKLAHOMA

-2023 DE Bai Jobe, Community Christian (Norman, OK)

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound four-star toured the Texas campus over the weekend with teammates from Sean Cooper's C4 7on7. Jobe and other prospects from both north and south of the Red River enjoyed their time on the Forty Acres. While there are a couple of names to know from C4, Jobe may be the prize.

Seeing Austin was an enjoyable experience for the Norman native who also plays a little basketball.

“It was a really nice place,” Jobe said. “I wish we were able to go to the field and see more stuff, but I understand.”

He has three offers from Washington State, Pittsburgh, and Arkansas. More are on the way, with OU showing interest.

-2023 WR Morgan Pearson, Plainview (Ardmore, OK)

Another solid looking prospect at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, the three-star already holds offers from Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, and Illinois State.

He’s also a college baseball prospect, and absolutely loved getting to see Austin this weekend.

“Everyone treated me great,” said Pearson. “Some of my teammates stopped by after our (7v7) games and just looked at the campus.”

He had 48 catches, 831 yards receiving, and 10 touchdowns in 2020 at Ardmore. He’ll likely see more recruiting attention with good tape.

“The new stadium (renovations) being built looks beautiful,” Pearson said.

-Others who joined them:
2022 LB Chase Faber, McAlester (McAlester, OK)
2022 ATH Trudell Berry, Lee (Baytown, TX)
2023 ATH Erik McCarty, McAlester (McAlester, OK)

Mike Roach:  Elite DL David Hicks details plans for a busy summer

Hicks talks to Bo Davis at Texas, but he also speaks often with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, and he said that shows how much Texas wants him.

“I usually talk to coach Sarkisian a lot,” he said. “We just talk about what schools I like and all of that. It means a lot because not that many head coaches are like that in my recruitment.”

Elite DL David Hicks details plans for a busy summer

KATY, Texas — David Hicks is blossoming into one of the elite prospects in the country for the 2023 class.

The five-star defensive lineman from Katy Morton Ranch is working on improving his game and that starts with the mental part.

“I want to get better mentally and get better with my hands,” Hicks said. “Right now I’m working on my speed and all aspects of my game. Right now, I want to get a lot better in my mental game.”

Hicks recently attended the Texas A&M spring game. He said he had a good time watching the game and seeing the energy of Texas A&M fans.

“It was good,” he said. “I liked the game. It was fun just being around the Texas A&M fans was fun.”

Texas A&M defensive line coach Elijah Robinson is one of the best recruiters in the nation and he’s close with Hicks’ and his family.

“Coach Robinson I’ve known since the eighth grade,” Hicks said. “My dad is real close to him so me and coach Robinson are pretty tight.”

Hicks is looking at making an unofficial visit to Austin in June. Culture is an important factor for him as he wants to find a program with a family-like environment.

“The culture,” he said. “Culture means a lot to me especially if I go far away from home, I want to make sure everything is a family environment to me.”

Hicks has a busy summer planned. He and his father are going to hit the road and see the schools he’s considering out east.

“I probably want to go visit the east coast schools this summer,” he said. “We will hit the west coast next summer. Ole Miss, Florida, Clemson and Ohio State. Schools like that.”

When it comes time for a final decision, Hicks wants to be developed and also get an education that can serve him after football.

“Just culture and coaches that can get me to the next level,” he said. “Not only that but getting me into the business I want to get into. I want to coach, and I also want to own a business so that after I’m coaching I can have my business going on.”

At 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, Hicks is ranked as the No. 5 defensive tackle in the nation and No. 5 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

(Nick Harris) Multiple Texas commits and targets to compete in state track meet this weekend in Austin

Spoiler

One of the more entertaining high school sporting events in the state of Texas returns to Mike A. Myers Stadium this weekend as hundreds of the state's best athletes will compete at the state track meet in Austin one year after losing their track season due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

The meet will begin on Thursday with 3A and 4A before Friday's action features 2A and 5A and Saturday features 1A and 6A.

With Steve Sarkisian's staff putting an emphasis on recruiting players with speed and athletic ability, it's no surprise that multiple Texas targets and commits will be in action this weekend to compete for state titles. Let's take a look at each commit/target that will be in action:

Rueben Owens, Running Back, El Campo (2023)

Texas' lone 2023 commit will make his first trip to Austin as a commit on Thursday to compete in the long jump and 4x200-meter relay events. Owens is expected to be among the top contenders in the long jump as he has swept the event at every meet he has competed in this year. Thursday will serve as a good opportunity for Owens to see Austin before coming back on campus in June for the Texas junior weekend on June 11-13.

Dalton Brooks, Athlete, Shiner (2023)

After winning a football state championship in December, Dalton Brooks will be looking to grab another ring in the 2A 4x100-meter relay event on Friday. His brother Doug Brooks will also be in action this weekend competing in the discus throw as the two cousins of 2021 signee Jonathon Brooks will get an up-close look at Texas this weekend before coming back to Austin in June for the junior weekend.

Isaiah Crawford, Defensive End, Post (2023)

While Crawford doesn't hold an offer from Texas yet, he is expected to have quite a bit of options when his recruitment is all said and done. The 2A track star will be competing in the 200-meter dash on Friday at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds.

Mike at Night

Spoiler

— Texas was the first school to offer 2023 Arlington Lamar offensive tackle Isaiah Robinson last year when Herb Hand was on staff, but the Longhorns haven't yet re-offered Robinson under the new staff. That could change soon as Robinson is set to speak with Kyle Flood at length tomorrow. The two spoke briefly back in March, but tomorrow will be a more in-depth meeting with Robinson and his family. The big offensive tackle wants to get to campus sometime this summer to see Texas, but his family wants to get to know the Texas staff a bit more. We will see how things progress from here.
