I don't know "the plan". They're talking to numerous people and conducting interviews/putting out feelers for various slots. They're not just swinging a dead cat and hiring the first dipshit it hits.

I remain adamant that guys need to be hired ahead the first signing day. If they don't do that, we're facing Malikmas giftgiving to other programs. Relatively speaking, we may have different views on what "quickly" means. That time frame is quick to me, but that doesn't mean shit needed to have gotten done yesterday.

I assume we are also just clearing, or coming up to, the mandatory time-periods any AD job posting requires before an announcement of a hire could even be made. THermanos got fired Friday after Thanksgiving. Not much time yet.

Yeah we're not hiring Harrell if Herman gets fired.

Maybe yes.

1 hour ago, DefinitelyNotHollywoodColt said:

So we’re going to promote an assistant on a staff that was just axed due to poor performance? An assistant with no prior HC experience?

yeahhhhh, about that.

Maybe no.

52 minutes ago, XYZ said:

Stop saying “if Harrell comes here and Herman gets fired, he could get the HC job”. That’s just not going to happen. When was the last time that Texas fired a football head coach and promoted an assistant to head coach? That would be never.

Maybe fuck yourself.

49 minutes ago, Gene Parmesan said:

Neither of those programs fired their head coaches.

Maybe yes.

38 minutes ago, jdhorn92 said:

No , that is incorrect.  In your scenario, if Texas fired Herman, then Harrell would no way be considered for the HC job at Texas.  No way.

Maybe no.

34 minutes ago, Rhinotx said:

Meyer is technically still employed there as an Assistant AD. Not sure if that means anything but I think he could have stuck it out if he wanted to.

Maybe fuck yourself.

As at least one or two surly assholes pointed out, there are in fact some scenarios in which Harrell might be a viable candidate to replace a fired MensaTom.

For example, Harrell's O puts up 45 a game, but Ash's D fucks up so badly that we lose five of those games, then MensaTom hits the road and Harrell may very well get a shot at the HC. Or, less related to foobaw, MensaTom gets popped for DUI with a live shemale and a dead female in the back seat...

Bottom line, don't turn a range of several possibilities into a binary yes/no resulting in "impossible" instead of "not very probably, but could happen".

Ok, some heavy duty research here (have you guys heard of something called Wikipedia?) but it seems Harrell’s dad worked for Bob Shipley at Brownwood, his brothers are all coaching in Texas and his wife is from Tyler, where her family may still reside. Decent checkmarks in the “move back to Texas” boxes when compared to SC.

And something not in the Wikipedia write up (by the way, that site is pretty good, you should check it out), I remember a story from his time in Green Bay, he literally lived in the most bare bones apartment you could imagine, had only a bean bag chair, video console/TV and slept on a mattress that I think was just on the floor. He’s lived in places like Brownwood, Ennis, Lubbock, Green Bay, Denton, for most of his life. He ain’t no LA guy, who needs the fancy lifestyle. Yes, Austin is big, too, but it’s not Los Angeles crazy big.

Lulz.  Upon a quick search, I graduated high school with his wife.

I’m anxious about several major things in my life at the moment, this is not one of them. This topic is merely an entertaining distraction. It seems the administration is doing a great job of controlling the information surrounding the search process and I hope we’re all pleasantly surprised with the outcome. But, I’m a Texas fan and getting accustomed to let downs. At least I’m not emotionally tied to the Razorbacks program...

Chip Brown / Horns 247 / The latest (on the coaching search) - Monday, 12:00 pm

Spoiler

Monday, 12 pm - As we head into Week 2 of Tom Herman’s search for two new coordinators and two receivers coaches, here’s where things stand …

Former Rutgers coach Chris Ash, the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State on the Buckeyes’ 2014 national title team with Herman, is a leading candidate (if not THE leading candidate) to replace Todd Orlando.

Herman and Ash have talked about the possibility of Ash becoming Texas’ next defensive coordinator (although Ash hasn’t been in Austin to formally interview and wouldn’t need to because he and Herman are so close, sources said).

Ash, however, is interested in seeing if current Ohio State defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley ends up getting the Boston College head-coaching job, sources said. If so, Ash might be in the mix to return to Ohio State, sources said.

Indications are the Boston College coaching search could wrap up this week.

We’ve reported from the beginning that Texas strength coach Yancy McKnight is doing Herman’s advance work - contacting candidates and gauging their interest - and that McKnight contacted Todd Graham as a defensive coordinator candidate.

Graham, a former head coach at Rice, Tulsa and Arizona State, hired McKnight at Rice in 2006. Sources said Graham has interviewed for the vacant New Mexico head-coaching job.

We’ve also heard former Missouri coach Barry Odom as a possible DC candidate, but Odom might be the leading candidate to take over the defense at Virginia Tech under Justin Fuente.

Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, a Broyles Award finalist this year whom Texas will face in the Alamo Bowl, has also been a name of interest. But sources have indicated Scalley, a devout Mormon who teaches the Latter-day Saints program to Utah football players in addition to serving as DC, is very comfortable at Utah.

The Week 1 main target of Herman’s offensive coordinator search - USC’s Graham Harrell - met with Herman last Wednesday in Houston, according to sources, and the two talked about the possibility of Harrell joining the Texas staff, sources said.

Sources indicated financial parameters of the job (three years guaranteed at roughly $6 million) were discussed and even the possibility of UT’s new offensive coordinator installing his offense during bowl practices.

But Harrell, who interviewed for the UTSA head-coaching job in Dallas last Monday, sources told Horns247, has returned to Los Angeles and continues to recruit for USC, where it’s been announced Clay Helton will remain the coach.

Sources said Harrell has a close relationship with Helton and has enjoyed the autonomy Helton afforded him in their first season together.

Sources said the reason nothing has been officially announced about Harrell’s future because he’s waiting to see if any other head-coaching job opportunities might come open that he would interview for. (Chip Brown)

Chip can't be bothered to keep up with actual college football news.  V-Tech has already named their new DC, and it isn't Odom.  Odom is going to be announced as the new Memphis HC.

Lol. FCB basically just said Harrell isn't coming to Texas, but waiting to announce he is returning to USC just in case other HC opportunities present themselves.

Such bullshit.  If he told USC he was declining Herman's offer they would have put up a billboard announcing his return.

Todd Graham hasn't coordinated a defense in 15 years.  HHis defenses got worse every single year he was the HC at Arizona St - his last year they had the 104th ranked scoring defense in the country.   He's also, possibly, allegedly, an even bigger asshole than Herman.

That can't be real.  If it were I would hope our AD would have the sense to fire Herman if he tried to pull something like that.

The only part of it that was believable is the idea that Herman would be looking at connections from all the way back in his Rice days. I can believe that. It's just that none of them are, you know, qualified candidates or anything.

They didn't have any overlap at Rice - but i do believe that he (or someone on his staff) might have  reached out to him for consultation.

Or Chip Brown is just full of shit.

Harrel waiting out the HC market before making a decision is really the only thing that makes sense though.   Otherwise he would have either taken the Texas job, or as you mentioned, announced he was staying at USC.

There's no possibly or allegedly to it. Todd Graham is a gaping asshole.

I think you're right that the only reason we haven't heard anything is because Harrell is seeing what shakes loose - but I think if Harrell has told us 'no thanks' and is staying at USC unless a HC offer comes (as Chip is implying) that we would have heard that from the USC side.

This seems like positive news for Texas. You'd think if it's a choice between Traylor and Harrell, Harrell has to have an edge because of his experience at USC. So did Harrell turn them down? Who the hell knows, but at least that means he's still a candidate for us. Maybe he has other options as well.

I think that's a better coaching staff than the one that got us to 10 wins.

I'm sure his Agent is advising him to not tell anyone anything.  Even if he was to get a HC offer he didn't want to take (UNLV for example) he could try to leverage that.

I can't see Harrell turning down that job - I think maybe Traylor was just a better fit.  He 's got more experience and has a ton of HC experience (albeit at the HS level).
