  • Four Texas Tech players were arrested and booked into the Lubbock County jail on Sunday morning, according to mug shots and records posted by Inside the Red Raiders publisher Jarret Johnson.

The four players are quarterback Jett Duffey, wide receiver Quan Shorts, defensive back Desmond Smith and linebacker Christian Taylor. Duffey was booked at 4:15 a.m. on criminal mischief charges, Taylor at 4:48 a.m. on criminal mischief charges, Shorts at 5:08 a.m. on disorderly conduct charges, and Smith at 8:07 a.m. on disorderly conduct charges. All remain on the Lubbock County jail’s active roster as of press time.

Duffey, a sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, appeared in one game as a redshirt freshman in 2017, but is expected to compete with junior McLane Carter for the starting role this fall. This has not been Duffey’s first disciplinary issue in Lubbock, however. He was suspended by the university for the spring and summer sessions of 2017 after the Texas Tech Title IX panel determined he had “nonconsensual intercourse” with a woman in April 2016. Duffey was named the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Mr. Texas Football Award winner during his senior year of 2015 before enrolling for the spring term of 2016.

Shorts is a junior from Humble, Texas, in the Houston area. He has 14 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns in 18 career appearances. Smith, a junior from Odessa, Texas, started at cornerback for the Red Raiders last fall, collecting 46 tackles and one interception. Taylor, a junior from Houston, appeared in all 13 games in 2017, registering five tackles.

Not that there’s ever a good time for four players to be arrested, but Sunday’s arrests are an especially bad one. The Red Raiders’ men’s basketball program meets No. 1 seed Villanova for a spot in the program’s first Final Four at 2:20 p.m. ET today in Boston.

Texas Tech did not respond to a CFT inquiry seeking comment, but one is presumably coming at some point today.

Duffey is in danger of getting booted, due to past incidents.

The other three haven't had any public issues.

The assumption is a simple Class B Misdemeanor, which should warrant in house punishment during the spring.

I know Des Smith, he's typically been a (obligatory) good kid. I'm interested to see exactly what this was all about.

breaking a car windshield in front of the cops 1 block from campus makes you a moron

and breaking a private dorm window across the street from campus when the cops are there after beating a rape charge makes you a total loser

Tech cannot afford to lose 2 on defense and their QB position is shit thanks to bro broing that up receiver is about the only position they can take a loss of a player and it will not matter because bro stock piled 100 of them

Bye bye, Jett.  Good riddance.

I guess the positive out of this is the Lubbock media doesn't hide shit for the program like the rape enablers down in Waco.

Article say they all remain on the active roster..

of the Lubbock County jail. Guess they should have a decent longest yard team..

Kliff's had a lot of issues, but Mr. Duffey might just be the one to get him fired.  If Kliff boots him, then for 2nd straight season, he'll have to start a QB that isn't up to par (like Nic Shimonek) because Jett couldn't stay out of trouble, and Kliff can't anything less than a solid winning season.

kliff will get kliff fired the QB issue is just icing on the shit cake that has been kliff so far

1. coming in wanting to be coach GQ before winning a game

2. not giving a shit about penalties until 3 or 4 games into the 3rd season when it was clear it was costing them wins and even then being dismissive of seriously addressing it

3. pants off dance off, ice bucket challenge, ice cream socials, what is on kliffs ipod, uniform designing (that sucked) and other stupid bullshit that only sells when you win 8 or 9 games not when you are getting the shit kicked out of you on all sides of the ball and every aspect of the game and you are correcting none of it

4. fucking off defense for 3 seasons

5. fucking off special teams for every season most likely including next season

6. refusing to hire an OC that was worth a shit and to even consider giving up the OC duties when it was clear all aspect of of "being a head coach" were sucking

7. shit clock management and shit time out management

8. running off QBs left and right

9. running off other players left and right for no clear reason and never even getting some of them to ever show up to campus

10. off the field player issues left and right

11. having 30 receivers on the team and forgetting the O line, special teams/kicking and other positions

so it was not just the inability to recruit a QB and the facts are with his record he probably would have managed to just have more QBs to run off if he had managed to recruit more or they would be leaving after doing stupid shit

but he could have hit a home run with QB recruiting and managing to keep them and the other stupid shit going on with him and the team still would have prevented them from winning more than 6 or 7 games consistently if that

and really success with QBs probably would have just emboldened his hard headed ass to keep letting the other stupid shit go on like it was......because the season with Mahomes made him think that with a serviceable QB and a defense that was still improving they could be even better this season while he kept doing most of the same stupid shit

Nick was not really as bad as many think he was the facts are Mahomes made Tech fans forget that the "air raid" really does not need a super star QB it needs a QB that will execute the plays as called and that will not break out of the pocket trying to be Vince

Mahones was not great for the "air raid" he was just "great" for Tech fans that were desperate to see something "exciting", but unfortunately his free styling got the shit knocked out of him and it does not play into the "take the 3 to 5 yards you are afforded" that the air raid demands

Nick was just like all the other string of serviceable "air raid" QBs that Tech fans have fallen in love with in the past, but unfortunately for him coach Bro was still calling shit and he is still a totally shitty head coach with terrible special teams and clock management and horrid team discipline

Nic was the worst QB of the Air Raid era at Tech.  The only QBs he's close to are Seth Doege and Taylor Potts (post getting his bell rung by Sergio Kindle).  Sonny Cumbie and Cody Hodges had limited arm strength but were accurate and could make quick decisions under pressure.  Shimonek could not.

Apparently Taylor smashed in the window of a car right in front of some cops and Duffy may have punched a hole in a wall (lucky he didn't hit a stud).  The other two guys got caught up in the mess somehow.  This adds to a pretty long list of guys Kliff has recruited who have gotten into trouble including murder (alleged).  Copied from another board:

That being said they've had, by their own admission, some guys who society would deem undesirable, between Rika Levi allegedly murdering at least one person after leaving, Nigel Bethel being arrested for drug trafficking after leaving (not to mention his incident with Amber Battle), the whole stolen guns out of a drug dealer's safe with Dakota (who I believe is a good person), Castaneda, and Ellison, Paul Banks being arrested recently for organized crime activities, Boyd cutting Farrar's throat after being on campus a couple weeks, Duffey being suspended from the university for allegedly sexual assaulting a young woman... and that's just what is public... so much drama.

Kliff has recruited poorly, granted, including brining in a lot of low character guys (including guys who are just lazy and entitled, not criminals).  That being said, he's been pretty consistent with kicking them off the team when they get in serious trouble and has rarely given second chances.  This has been one of the few things I think he's done well at as a head coach.

I'll admit up front that I'm a Tech fan, but certainly not an apologist for illegal behavior on the part of their athletes.  That being said, the above is complete bullshit.  The behaviors of Levi, Bethel (who KK had kicked off the team) and Banks all took place, if true, a substantial amount of time after they left the team and Lubbock completely.  If you trace the post athlete experiences of the ex athletes at any school,  logic dictates a variety of inappropriate behaviors would be uncovered.

Secondly,   Farrar's throat wasn't cut or anything remotely close to it.  It was a completely non legal issue and Boyd is a starting WR at Utah now.

If you watch the video of this week end's incident you see Duffey appears to be sober as a judge and reserved in his behavior.  He didn't deserve to be arrested IMO.  Taylor did deserve it.  As to Duffy's supposed Title IX transgression, there were no legal charges, court appearances, arrests or anything of the sort.  Title IX is an absurdity.

I'm just quoting a guy from the Tech 247 board.  I will agree that all teams have guys get in trouble after graduation.  We had a d-lineman from Round Rock or Austin quit the team and rob  a convenience store back home a year or two ago.  Stuff happens.   However, it does seem like Kliff had to take a lot more questionable character guys in recruiting than most teams have in the last 5 years.  I have to give him credit for taking care of business after the fact though.
