San Antonio Spurs 2019-2020 season thread: Just here for the HEB commercials

After taking the first couple games off, Derrick White is looking very fucking good. Looking forward to his start tonight (presumably) over DJ. Last night was tough, too many stupid turnovers and missed free throws. The basics. And a lot of those turnovers were unforced, I saw two travels (rocking the back foot) by Marco and Forbes, that stupid pass from DJ to Lonnie during the 2-on-1 fast break, 2 or 3 moving screens, just shitty/lazy play. IF we fix that, and at least equal them in the turnover department, LAC is not 6 points better than us.

Also, fuck Belinelli is a terrible fit for this team. He just takes up space out there. Not sure on what type of team he'd fit, but any team outside of San Antonio would be great.

You look at Derozan's stat line and think, not a bad game until you focus on those 7 turnovers. That's totally unacceptable. Can't win many games when a key player is giving the ball away regularly. Clippers shot 43%, so those 7 extra possessions netted them roughly 6 points, the difference in the game. Spurs shot 45%, so getting shots instead of those turnovers is +6 for them. I know that's shaky analysis of statistics, but on a very basic level it's true that his turnovers alone were the difference in the game.

Way too early takes on the early season, sure to be wrong:

1.  LMA is 34 years old and while his game should age gracefully, he looks like the decline has begun.  Pop and company have done a wonderful job of milking great seasons from him in his 30's, but may be time to cash out.

2.  DJM looks great coming off ripping his knee.  Only attempted 6 3's.  Only hit 1 so he still has some work to do on his shot, but everyone has to be extremely pleased with him.  Minor gripe, needs to cut down on his turnovers if he's not going to be a really high assist/USG guy.

3.  Marco looks dead.  Now, in his defense, he started this way last year before finally getting going in December some time and finished with a decent (not great) season.  He's a shooter, who's job it is to shoot 37/38% from 3,  move the ball on offense, and hide himself on defense.  He's 33 years old so he should have a couple of functional years left but he's taking minutes away from Lonnie and this is unacceptable.  Lonnie may suck in the beginning or shit, the whole season, but we spent a high enough pick to find out.  Gotta let the kid play.

4.  Why is Pop so afraid of playing Derrick and DJM together?  It looks obvious these guys are our future in the back court (with hopefully LW4 playing wing), why not have the future start now?

5.  Trey Lyles looks like the guy from last year and that's not good.  Can't defend.  Can't shoot.  Can't really pass.  He's tall!  So he can get some rebounds but if he can't knock down 3's then not sure what he's going to provide.  We can take some solace that Marcus Morris has had a horrible start to the season and has knee tendinitis.

Look, these are the Spurs.  They're going to be well coached, generally give good effort, and have offensive sets built around our better players.  No idea what the plan is other than to go out every night and lay it all on the court to try and win games and that is laudable in a vacuum.

Also, don't know if we'll see Lonnie's minutes go up very much in next few weeks..... Pop is giving him some tough love out of the box.

The fact that Pop is doing his tough love routine and mentioning Lonnie five games into the season is a great sign. He’ll start getting more PT.

Agreed. He's calculated. This isn't for nothing.

Also agreed that DDR can't be a black hole. He's had a couple games with 0 assists as well. He looked great for a spurt last night, but that's negated by his own shitty play with turnovers. Hoping LMA is just off on the jumpers, because if he has games like last night often, yeah he's on the decline big-time. If he can play at last year's level, he'll be fine, and we will too.

I'm wondering what this teams extra gear is - if we have one. So far this season we have kind of hung around in close games and done enough to win 3 times out of 4.

When we went on that run to build a big lead against Portland it seemed like the defense was what really sparked it. This might be a team that plays best when the defense can create for the offense. Our half court O seems like it will be pretty average, maybe above average but not championship caliber by any stretch.

That's one of my complaints with Murray. He's great at a faster pace especially off of TO but half court (until he shows he can knock shots down) he is pedestrian.
