Nov 19th  Alex Dunlap  Orangebloods.com

Iowa State recap and Baylor

"Run blocking was bad for the whole O-line.  Push by o-line was nonexistent."

  • Cosmi one of worst games of season
  • Braun's worst game of season
  • Shack one of worst games of season
  • Kerstetter one of his worst games of season
  • Okafor baseline game (not his worst game)

Questionable rotations of CBs throughout the games with no consistency.... even inconsistent Reps for CBs from game to game -- like musical chairs??  (Gives some detail)

Expects critical evaluations to be done for the entire defensive staff after the season because of so much inconsistency all year and lack of player development...

Kevin Dunn asks:  Do NFL scouts think Texas is well coached and runs high level schemes??

Alex makes a few comments, but says not sure and wants to gather more info...  (HaHaHa)

Hey @OnAComputer,

Just my input to your discussion regarding Coaching Staff changes that should happen for Texas Football...

  • Must be replaced:  Mehringer, Warehime and Meekins
  • Add 5th Defensive Asst:  Agree that another coach should be added to defense.
  • Should add a co-defensive coordinator, maybe Chris Ash as Co-DC/Secondary Coach
  • LBs are worst coached position group so hire additional assistant for LBs/recruiting
  • Move Naivar or Meekins to an off-field role assisting in Special Teams and TEs
  • Hire Samples for TE Asst Coach
  • Hire an experienced WR/Pass Coordinator Asst to help offense like Joe Brady
  • Replace Tim Beck (With Sam being a Senior he can handle an OC change)

Also not fun to talk about, but adding more diversity, experience, and good-cop type assistants are crucial for the staff changes going into the 2020 season.  Other teams are constantly negative recruiting that the Horns Football Staff is "too white" and how Mehringer and Warehime severely berate players...

Herman needs to lose the powdered eggs and burnt toast approach going forward.  Assistants must stop playing favorites, hold the players accountable and follow thru on the meritocracy philosophy.  Coaches must develop more unity and better leadership within the team...

Herman must hire great experienced assistants, let them coach, and hold them accountable.  Tom needs to hire an OC he can trust to call plays so Mensa can be the CEO of the program and hopefully produce the winning results Texas fans desire.

You have some good ideas in there. I want to bring back Samples, but it’s need to be at WR, not TE. He’s young and has never coached TEs before. I agree that Beck needs to either move to WRs coach or be replaced by a real OC.

But Any list of must be replaced coaches that doesn’t have Orlando first is dead wrong. Not only has he done a terrible job as DC, but his position unit is the worst, and he’s a terrible recruiter. There’s no reason to keep him, and his incompetence hurts the team way more than Mehringer or Warehime.

I definitely wouldn’t have Ash as a defensive hire, either. Ash is more of the same. Under qualified coach with a subpar resume that’s one of Herman’s buddies. He wouldn’t be much, if any, improvement from our current staff.

Beck:  "Shot ourselves in the foot a lot...  Missed assignments.. as many as we've had all year.  Didn't execute well. No rhythm in plays". Quit blaming the F'N players... total failure by coaches!!

FCB:  So the last possession, why didn't you keep pressing, pedal down? (15:25 mark)

Beck:  "We'd kinda moved the ball... thought  "Let's try run game, couple things...."

"We still have a lot of confidence in our players...  I know that game we weren't maybe running the ball very well...  Yah never know...  Yah got to keep trying don't yah??   At some point, you can't abandon things all together... We felt good about the plays we had called..."

Agree with a lot of this. Sounds like you get the gist. Especially with the adding diversity and adding a new coach to LBs,.

They also discuss the first ever voicemail on the podcast's Hot Take Line and whether or not Texas will get dragged in Waco, or if it will be another frustrating game of woulda, coulda, shoulda.
