Arkansas fires Chad Morris

Love the shot at Chad Morris....

"When a change is made like this, the coach tends to be quite different from a personality standpoint than the man he replaces."

"This couldn't be more true of Pittman, who comes off as honest and genuine while also being cool and collected."

The players loved him (Pittman) at Arkansas, as noted by this open letter to Hunter Yurachek back on Nov. 12.

It feels like everyone hated Morris so much that they're just slingshotting a bit and hiring a guy just because he loves Arkansas and the players love him.

That's all great, but there's nothing on this guys resume that says he's ready for this rebuild. Coaches tend to become a lot less likable when they're losing.

Seems like an underwhelming hire, and probably not a good one all thigns considered. But I do like when somebody gets a gig someplace where they really want to be. Sometimes it works out OK.

I don't know why but I'm sort of rooting for the Razorbacks to get out of the pit of doom and be somewhat decent. I just feel sorry for them, I guess. Other than that, I want them to beat aggy repeatedly.

Pittman seems like "Arky's Coach O"

Dude can recruit and is a hell of an O-Line Coach.  Needs to get his assistant hires right especially the coordinators.  If he does, he might be the right guy to rebuild Arky...

Btw, one of Pittman's best friends was on Lane Kiffin's staff at FAU -- might see him also end up at Arky...

(Forgot his friends name... maybe Lance Thompson??)

They should have gone after Blake Anderson, already stuck in Arkansas, knows the layout, probably ready for a change after a shitty persona year, decent coach, and good track record of Arkansas State coaches.

Mizzou made a run at him before their board freaked out (though they probably fell ass backwards into a better hire with Drinkwitz). Arky seemed to really want a guy with SEC experience, whatever the fuck that's worth.

So, Arky hired a position coach from one of the worst offenses in the SEC because he was from Arkansas and wanted to be there?  (Of course he wanted to be there.  Duh.)

That's outstanding.

Maybe they figured he was cheap and couldn’t be worse than Morris. They can save up and get someone good in 4 years.

Quote from Video:  "Arkansas may not get the coach that they want, but they might get the coach they need"

THIS^^^   They lost Kiffin to Ole Miss when Luke was fired.  Pittman fell into Arky job... but Coach Pittman will make the team more physical, rebuild the OL/DL play at Arky and that's exactly what that program needs to compete in the SEC.  Pittman is a unifier that will improve the culture and Razorback fans will rally behind him -- he has lots of alumni support.

Personally, I think Joey Freshwater at Arky would have ended up horribly... Not a good fit for either side.

YESSIRRR....

Arkansas: Sam Pittman’s deal with the Razorbacks is for five-years and starts at $3 million annually, Steve Berkowitz tweets and adds that the contract gets extended by a year (up to two times during the initial term) if the Razorbacks play in a bowl game.

SMH 😬

He's basically the lowest paid coach in the SEC with almost zero buyout:

Quote

Pittman, 58, will also be eligible for additional compensation through incentives. He’ll earn an extra $250,000 annually if the team wins 6 or more games, $500,000 for 7 or more wins and $750,000 for 8 or more wins. The amounts are non-cumulative.

Pittman’s buyout would be $6 million should the UA decide to fire him at any time before Dec. 1, 2021. The amount drops to $3 million on the same date the following year, and $1.5 million at any time after Dec. 2, 2022.

Pittman’s employment agreement also has language included that ties his win-loss record to his buyout amount if he were to be fired as head coach. If the program’s overall winning percentage is below .500 upon Pittman’s dismissal, he would receive half of his remaining annual compensation at that time.

So, if they fire him after two years, they owe him $1.5M.  (No way he has an overall winning record.)  Linger on into year three and it's $750K.

You are off by a year...

  • $6mill buyout till Dec 1st 2021 (Yr1 &Yr2)
  • Then $3mill buyout till Dec 1st 2022 (Yr3)
  • Then $1.5mill buyout after Dec. 2, 2022.

Also has an automatic contract extension of 1yr if they make a bowl game, so not sure exactly how that affects the buyout clause...

Video: Sam Pittman gets choked up during introductory presser

By Doug Samuels -   December 10, 2019

Before landing the head coaching job with the Razorbacks, Sam Pittman was a longtime Division I offensive line coach. His only stint as a head coach came back in the early 90’s when he led the Hutchinson CC (JC – KS) program for a few seasons.

Pittman has worked under some really impressive coaches and been a part of some really good staffs dating back to 1994 when he landed his first FBS coaching position. However, while he has had the trusted assistant head coach title, he’s never been a FBS play caller, and the odds of making the jump from Power Five offensive line coach to major college head coach is an uphill battle.

Making the jump from Power Five offensive line coach to SEC head coach is unheard of, even for someone of Pittman’s pedigree.  For some quick perspective, in a study we did a handful of years ago, just over 9% of FBS head coaches at the time (2014) had offensive line backgrounds, with quarterbacks coaches and defensive backs coaches combining to account for over 50% of FBS head coaches at the time.

So when Sam took the stage tonight as the Head Hog at Arkansas, he fought back his emotions as he stood on that stage fulfilling a lifelong dream. But he could only fight them back for so long before they got the best of him in a moment that reminds us all that even big, gruff offensive line coaches are people too.  During the presser, he thanks all that Kirby Smart has done for him, talks about what he wants his team to look like and how they will make residents of Arkansas proud, and the belief that must be present for the program for him to have over 500 coaches reach out to him since the news broke of his hire to try and get on his staff.

So much went into this opportunity for Pittman, from hours in the film room and on the practice field to preparing his tail off for interviews he was considered a long shot for. Great to see a guy that has paid his dues in the profession earn a shot.

Pittman finally breaks down at about the 18:30 mark of the video.

More (most?) HC contracts should be as incentive based as this dude's. It's fucking ludicrous what these guys are being guaranteed and walk away with even if they completely shit the bed.

Most coaches have a shitload more leverage than this dude.  And most schools are desperate enough to pay.

https://247sports.com/college/arkansas/Article/Rion-Rhoades-Sam-Carter-Arkansas-Razorback-staff-Sam-Pittman--140867326/

Two defensive assistants in cornerbacks coach Sam Carter and linebackers coach Rion Rhoades have officially joined new Razorback head coach Sam Pittman's staff at Arkansas.

Carter, a former star safety for TCU, is the third former Missouri assistant to join Pittman's staff. The Head Hog was hired earlier this month, and since then, former Mizzou offensive line coach Brad Davis has joined Pittman’s staff and Razorback receiver coach Justin Stepp has been retained. Additionally, Pittman found his new defensive coordinator in former Missouri head coach Barry Odom. Carter served as a defensive quality control assistant and analyst under Odom last season.

Rhoades took over as the head coach of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College in 2007, and he has led the Blue Dragons to a record of 99-50 since his arrival. Rhoades is expected to coach linebackers at Arkansas, a role that previous defensive coordinator John Chavis had for the Hogs. According to the IAWP rule, Rhoades has to coach on the field or else the Hogs would not be able to recruit any Hutchinson players for the next two years.
