The Crown (netflix)

Season 3 out now.  I'm two episodes in.  New cast, still fantastic.

The limericks in Episode 2 were funny.  Also, Helena Bonham-Carter is great, but I do miss Vanessa Kirby.

I already watched the whole season on Sunday.

So great. I won’t post anything else until more people have a chance to watch it - don’t want to spoil anything.

But Princess Anne has always been one of my favorite members of the BRF and this season shows why.

I hope we get a lot more of her in season four - she’s a fucking badass.

Like, if they don’t devote at least half an episode to the attempt to kidnap her, then what are they even doing?

As Princess Anne and Mark Phillips were returning to Buckingham Palace on 20 March 1974, from a charity event on Pall Mall, their Princess IV car was forced to stop on the Mall by a Ford Escort.[24] The driver of the Escort, Ian Ball, jumped out and began firing a pistol. Inspector James Beaton, Anne's personal police officer, responded by getting out of the car in order to shield her and to attempt to disarm Ball. Beaton's firearm, a Walther PPK, jammed, and he was shot by the assailant, as was Anne's chauffeur, Alex Callender, when he tried to disarm Ball.[25] Brian McConnell, a nearby tabloid journalist, also intervened, and was shot in the chest.[26] Ball approached Anne's car and told her of his kidnapping plan, which was to hold her for ransom, the sum given by varying sources as £2 million[27] or £3 million, which he claimed he intended to give to the National Health Service.[24] Ball then directed Anne to get out of the car, to which she replied: "Not bloody likely!", and reportedly briefly considered hitting Ball.[28] Eventually, she exited the other side of the limousine as had her lady-in-waiting, Rowena Brassey. A passing pedestrian, a former boxer named Ron Russell, punched Ball in the back of the head and then led Anne away from the scene. At that point, Police Constable Michael Hills happened upon the situation; he too was shot by Ball, but not before he called for police backup. Detective Constable Peter Edmonds, who had been nearby, answered and gave chase, finally arresting Ball.[25]

Beaton, Hills, Callender and McConnell were hospitalised, and all recovered from their wounds. For his defence of Princess Anne, Beaton was awarded the George Cross by the Queen, who was visiting Indonesia when the incident occurred;[29] Hills and Russell were awarded the George Medal, and Callender, McConnell and Edmonds were awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal.[24][30] Anne later visited Beaton in hospital and thanked him for his assistance. Later in 1984 the princess spoke about the event on TV to Parkinson saying she was 'scrupulously polite' to her would-be kidnapper as she thought it would be 'silly to be too rude at that stage'.[29]

Dude had already shot three people and when he tells her to come with him she responded “Not bloody likely!”.

She’s just awesome.

Yeah even though I knew what happened in Aberfan, I was still filled with dread with every scene in the classroom, just waiting for what I knew was coming.

But it didn’t make it any less devastating.

Man, I really hope QE2 has kept journals throughout her reign like QV. And they’re released to the public before I die. The things that woman has seen over the last century.

(But I’m still mad at her right now over the Prince Andrew bullshittery. Y’all see that disaster of an interview he did on Sunday? It’s going be a shame if she throws away all the reputation rehabilitation she’s done since Diana died on having a blind spot for her shitty favorite child.)

She went riding horses yesterday. Which is really amazing at her age.

Catherine the Great is not impressed.

Had to stop and read up on Aberfan during that episode. The Queen says to this day it’s her biggest regret of how she handled it.

Was only going to watch 2 episodes last night but ended up watching 4. Watching episode 5 right now.

Just finished Aberfan myself..now debating whether to start Ep. 4 or be reasonable and goto bed.  This season is really great...not missing the prior characters like I thought I might.

Edmure Tully is really doing a great job as Prince Phillip.

I’m enjoying it as well but I wish they would have kept the same cast and used makeup for aging. Tobias Menzies and Bonham Carter doing a good job as Philip and Margaret but the actress Olivia Colman looks like a pug and I would say her acting is stiff but that would be an affront to puppets everywhere.

I know Elizabeth was reserved but compared to the great Claire Foy I think she pales in comparison. I’m coming away from this really disliking Elizabeth. The way she treated Charles is unforgivable to me and she admits she doesn’t really feel emotion, typical sociopath...

Not that awards are the end all be all, but you are criticizing the acting of a woman who just won every award available for best actress while portraying a queen, for her portrayal of a queen.

Yeah I read her bio but I still find it hard to look at her and not long for Ms Foy.

The one role for which I wish they would have kept the actor is the Duke of Windsor.  Alex Jennings was simply suburb, quite resembled the ex-king, and stole every scene in which he took part.  Derek Jacobi is a fine actor, but for this role...I would have aged Jennings before recasting him.

not talking about the acting chops, but foy's liz had a charisma and charm, while the aged liz was just too grumpy too soon

I thought the ending of episode 6 explained exactly why she comes off as grumpy at her age.

felt bad for Charles there. Then started reading articles online about how nearly 50% of people over there want Charles to abdicate and let William take over. Poor Charles.

havent gotten that far yet.  im sure the portrayal is true to life.  just from a tv-show-viewers perspective, her character took a leap in persona (besides just obviously the look) from season to season without any continuity

Idk, season 2 ended with:  JFK assassination, the Profumo scandal, Macmillan resigning, and then she had Edward.  She seemed/seems....tired.

I think Colman got better towards the end. i was surprised how many episodes focused on not her - 2 for Charles, 1 for Margaret and 1 for Philip.

i thought the Philip and Anne casting was incredible. But on the flip side, Charles was meh, Camilla was way too pretty and HBC and Colman have like 1/10th the chemistry Foy and Kirby had.

Season 4 should be so good - Diana and Thatcher!

I think the show makers are constrained by the monarchy a bit in their portrayal of QE2. You don't have much of a chance as an actress to really expound on the role. Kirby and Smith got all the good scenes. Look at Helen Mirren in the Queen, very reserved and not alot of taking.  They left it to Michael Sheen to let it all out.  But then again maybe that's true to life and she just really is the quiet reserved slightly cold person because she has to be.

Think that’s how she is. She had to be told to show emotion at Aberfan. Brits have that “stiff upper lip” mentality.

Her uncle said it, the crown finds the right head. You can’t be monarch for long unless you have a certain personality. It will kill you or make you quit.
of course he abdicated for other reasons, but conformance to a standard is part of the weight.

This show is really really well done.

Olivia Colman can act circles around people. Tobias ain’t to shabby either.

I thought the entire cast did a great job.

But Anne is badass this season.
