Cowboy Boots

No caimans, but the Tecovas FQO (pecan) are great. Very comfortable and true to size.

Order a pair or two and if you don't like them for any reason send them back for a refund. I ordered two and sent back the one that didn't fit as well, and got my refund back in short order.

I'll go ahead and say it now. Square toed boots are more comfortable and rock for work wear. I'll agree they don't look as good, but I don't care when I'm wearing work or ranch boots. Also, a lot if not most of the original cowboy boots from the mid nineteenth century had square toes, albeit not the duck billed boots we have now.

I don’t have the Dillon, but I have a pair of the ostrich ropers and the caiman ropers.  Both are the most comfortable out of the box boots I’ve owned.

Tecovas cuustomer service is exceptional to boot.

I’ve got the Cartwright in bourbon.

Pics?

I really want a Nolan in chocolate but not offered; the bourbon looks too reddish for my taste but would appreciate a real world pic of your boots in bourbon.  Thinking the Duke in chocolate instead....

I have the bourbon and it is red. I don’t like them but my wife bought them for me. They aren’t even close to my most comfortable boot either.

Any of you Tecova wearers have a narrow foot? Rios/Mercedes are the best fit for me.

Interdasting.  Wear a B width?  My feet aren't narrow per se, so much as "low volume," meaning top-to-bottom rather than side to side.  But I think with age I may have spread out toward a D, hard to tell.  Where do you buy them?

I've a few online sources but call them to discuss terms and delivery....their B is perfect for my blades. Hardy boot, especially like the hybrid sole as it gives a extra tack for motorcycle duty.

Anderson Bean is good for flatter feet, but they are all square toed.

Feet aren't flat.  I have a substantial arch, but the distance between the bottom of my foot and the top is relatively small.  Don't think I've ever seen AB boots in a B.  They are Rios, or same owner and probably made in the same shop.  Same with Olathe.

I've never had any trouble with just B width.  Tony Lama, Nocona, Hecho, Justin, all fine in B.  But I haven't bought a pair of boots in 10 years or more and I feel pretty strongly that my foot has splayed out some and I either need an 11 or a C or maybe even a D (10.5 B was my go to from 16 to 40 something).

Agree 100%.   The older I get the less fucks I give about looks and the more I give about comfort - especially with shoes (or in this case boots).

I own a pair of the Duke in pecan. I wore them for the first time tonight and after getting them on, they were very comfortable. It took some muscle to get them on and they were tough to get off, but I know that will get easier over time. I would recommend them if someone is looking.

Always made me laugh when the oldtimers and the city boys would come in and bitch about square toes not being true cowboy boots and just a fad. Go back and look at any historical artifacts, pictures, or even movies (Tombstone for one) and all you'll see are square toe boots. And you'll see them for the very reason you mention, they're wayyyy more comfortable. And as far as "duck billed" goes, there have always been two variations of the sq toe: the French toe which is a more narrow square, and the broad square which has come back into popularity in the last 12-15 years.

They didn't make them that way back then because of comfort. It was a carryover from cavalry style boots and likely a combination of lacking the technology to make a proper toe box and shapes not really having changed that much from the days before left and right lasts. Some shoe and boot historians believe that it was German immigrants brought the techniques to make a proper toe box over with them and allowed toes to become narrower with a taller toe.

So I don’t have to travel back to the Eskino Hut wasteland, can we re-list the places to go to get your boots fixed?  After much horror I found a place in Dallas (actually, the Colony) that was great.

Then I up and moved to Houston.  Where do I go here for real repairs (not just soles and heels). Please don’t say anything that ends in “Shoe Hospital.”

Oh, and the place in Dallas is the The Colony Cobbler. David is the man.

Any love for Leddys in Angelo? Been thinking of heading there for a custom pair.

I have a pair of their belly cut gator customs with French toe and walking heel, and longhorn logo in gator on the vamp.  To say I love them would be a gross understatement.  They're probably the most comfortable pair of footwear I have owned outside the adidas ultra boost, but the boots fit way better.  To me it's totally worth the time and investment.  THat said, while I do not have any Tecovas boots the reviews on them speak for themselves.  Appears they have hit a sweet spot in the market with price, comfort, quality and customer service.

I think there's a lot of truth to this. Square toed military boots are characteristic of very inexpensive construction. Hell, during the Civil War, they didn't even have right and left boots, as you note.  The original Wellington boot and it's Hessian predecessor, were both pointed toe boots custom made for cavalrymen.  Neither style has a better claim to authenticity, really, it's just a matter of preference. I prefer a semi round or round toe and always will.

So you’re telling me I’m not choosing between square and round, but the French or the Nazis.

...Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least its an ethos.

Lord Wellington would bridle at the insinuation that he was French. Although I am reasonably sure there were plenty of Wellington boots on both sides during  the Napoleonic wars.

I got some Tecovas and they're a dream. Pain to break in but they're real comfortable for long walks. We walk about 30min each way for church and it's about as good as it gets for boots. Got the chocolate cartwrights.

Thanks for the post.  I've been eyeballing these for an upcoming birthday and didn't know anyone who had any experience with them.

No prob, happy to answer any qs. I got the chocolate cartwrights. Their ostrich looks so good might have to get another pair. I live in Boston with shitty weather so not many opportunities to wear them yet. But after three days of walking in them they're great. Snug, tts, and good for wearing all day.

I have a pair of the Tecovas ostrich and love them. Super comfortable. I also have a pair of their caiman. Beautiful boots.

I got one of those overpriced Black Jacks as a gift.  It's great.  Not $30 great, but great.

Anyone sent boots back to Lucchese for a refresh recently?  Turnaround still 2-3 months?

I sent a pair in about two years ago around Christmas time.  It took about that long.  They told me it would have been quicker but sent in the busy season.

There is a place on Bissonnet just east of Kirby called Shoe Savers.  The guy that runs the place is kind of a dick and it's not the cheapest place, but they do great work.

thx - how long did it take to break those ostrich in?

Virtually no time at all. Others may have had a different experience, but mine fit perfect right out of the box.

The caiman took much longer to break in but that's understandable since it's a much tougher leather.

Agreed with the above.  Got ostrich Tecovas a few years ago and took no time.  Got the caiman belly this Christmas and they were great on the feet, but the shaft it taking more time.  Not uncomfortable at all, but I wore them to Christmas dinner, and not owning a boot jack (didn't need one with the ostrich), it took my wife and all three teenaged kids to get them off.  Getting better with each wear and come off easy with the jack I now own.

My ostrich Tecovas (posted here) broke in quickly and have held up well under heavy wear.  Love 'em.

I recently was looking for a pair of light brown boots, and my wife (no pics) wanted me to try the the suede Tecovas - The Shane in honey suede.  I wasn't so sure since I've never owned suede anything, and the online pics of the honey suede made it look more yellow than light brown.  But with free returns, why not take a shot?  Glad I did - they are sharp and ridiculously comfortable.  Internet pics didn't do the color justice.  These probably won't, either:
