I guess they couldnt throw down the hammer in 2018 because, you know, the fucking world cup was in Russia, but this is still pretty big.

Russia has been handed a four-year ban from all major sporting events by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

It means the Russia flag and anthem will not be allowed at events such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics and football's 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But athletes who can prove they are untainted by the doping scandal will be able to compete under a neutral flag.

Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said the ban was part of "chronic anti-Russian hysteria".

"It is obvious that significant doping problems still exist in Russia, I mean our sporting community," he said. "This is impossible to deny.

"Chronic anti-Russian hysteria"  but also "impossible to deny" that there are "significant doping problems." So "you guys are being hysterically anti-Russian for not letting us cheat."

Makes you think about how horrible the Soviet Union must have been that an obvious kleptocracy is amazingly popular with its own citizens.

You really punish them for doping by letting the athletes still compete? I understand the argument that it’s not the athletes fault, but maybe they will stop doping if they’re not even allowed to attend. Just letting them to stop doping and still attend is pointless

How this effects the World Cup and Euro 2020

So they can compete as a neutral team in Qatar?

Yes, as it stands.

"If they qualify, a team representing Russia cannot participate," said Jonathan Taylor, chair of Wada's compliance review committee.

"But if there is a mechanism put in place, then they can apply to participate on a neutral basis, not as representatives of Russia.

"It will be for Fifa to implement, but they will have to do so in conjunction with Wada. But there will be no flag or anthem."

A Fifa spokesperson said football's world governing body was in contact with Wada to "clarify the extent of the decision in regards to football".

This has happened before - a team of Russian athletes competed under a neutral flag at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

What about qualifying?

The 2022 World Cup takes place from 21 November to 18 December, with European qualifying set to start in March 2021.

Despite their ban from the tournament, Russia can take part in qualifying.

Taylor added: "Because the qualifiers don't decide the world champion, Russia can take part. The decision applies to the World Cup tournament because it decides the world champion."

And how about Euro 2020?

The sanctions also prevent Russia from hosting events during the ban.

St Petersburg is a host city for group games and a quarter-final at next summer's European Championship (which is being hosted by several countries), as well as staging the Uefa Champions League final in 2021.

However, it will be allowed to fulfil those obligations as European football's governing body Uefa is not defined as a "major event organisation" with regards to rulings on anti-doping breaches.

That also allows Russia, who have already qualified for Euro 2020, to play at the tournament.
