The Cuming Conservative War On Porn

No offense. But you’re fucking nuts if you think I can prevent him from finding this shit in seconds.

And you’re fucking nuts if you think government regulations are the answer.

Would you like the government to regulate content because you’re worried he might see some penis and pussy?

What if I don’t want my kid to see violence? And someone else doesn’t like their kid watching football? And another person thinks kids shouldn’t be able to watch Harry Potter movies because they promote satanic magic?

Ask the idiots in Congress to restrict whatever content tickles our specific fear?

I’m not a porn watcher but I don’t trust the government to decide what is and what isn’t “right” for citizens to watch. They already try and get up in our bedrooms and vaginas and assholes enough.

Of course teens are going to seek out taboo content. As a parent, it’s my job to do my best to teach a healthy attitude about sex and sexuality and use tools available - parental blocking software, access to their social media, restricting internet access etc.

Kids are going to watch stuff we probably wouldn’t like them to and all we can do is hope we’ve raised them well enough to not let it turn them into their incels.

But fuck the government getting involved.

You're on Surly. It's porn of a different sort and definitely taboo content.

As the father of a teenage boy, I’m a little concerned about how easily he can access some really fucked up shit and how it will effect him. I wouldn’t mind a few barriers.

Unless you are homeschooling him and/or he's with you or at home 24/7, you're fucking nuts if you think he won't go to a friend's house or elsewhere and find the stuff (ignoring the fact that his friends could easily have porn on their smartphones).

And you're also fucking nuts if you think the government has a magical solution that will keep your teenager from viewing porn, but not you.

But ultimately this is not about keeping your teenager from viewing porn, because there's already laws on the books against minors accessing porn.

This is about keeping everybody from viewing porn.  Read the original article: "declare prosecution of obscene pornography a criminal justice priority."

These people want to get rid of all of it.  Hell, these fucksticks are like the guy from Montana that wants to get rid of yoga pants in public.

Actually, this political thread posted outside the CR (where it belongs) is a prime example of how censorship fails.

Actually this is a topic that affects everybody - these idiots want to ban porn for all of us.

These people would have banned the underwear section of the Sears and J.C. Penney catalogs when I was young.   That would have been bad, because the porn fairy wasn't exactly dropping Playboys and Hustlers in the woods or the closets of my friends' parents on a daily basis.

I was in a hotel in Korea, and hit xvideos or something. A screen came up with some sort of Korean National Police symbol and a bunch of korean script I obviously couldn't read. It was somewhat alarming. I was totally unaware this would happen. The cockblocking was not appreciated.

Are you sure it was cockblocking and not an advertisement?  Did any of it look something like this?

First, I have two young boys myself. They are both under 10, so I am not super worried yet, but this is certainly on my ind. I understand this concern.

That being said, what is your solution? Exactly what online content would you like blocked? I'll even grant you magical legislative powers to enact whatever you want for this thought exercise. What is the filter that can block whatever it is that you find objectionable without blocking a) international content and b) content that adults want to find for (and produced by) other consenting adults?

I don’t have an answer for these questions. Does anyone? Fuck.
Simply, I don’t want my kids to graduate to hardcore porn by their 12th birthday. Maybe the government can help. Buncha assholes act like govt reg is always bad. Fuck these traffic laws, medical licenses, and building codes.

The good news:  I'm from the government and I'm here to help.  The bad news:  I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

And don't kid yourself, these mooks are invoking "who will think of the children" to support a content-based ban.  Anytime lawmakers invoke the children, you can be sure that the Constitution and your civil liberties are fixin to take a hit.

They don't give a fuck about your children, but by invoking them, they can promote fear and uncertainty in adults and legislate something bad that gives those adults a false sense of security and cornholes someone else, and most importantly, get your vote and take away someone else's.

A parable of sorts. Gustavo Arellano, the "Ask a Mexican" guy, grew up in shitty gang-infested SoCal barrios back in the 1980s. One of his fellow nerd buddies was a Salvadoran kid whose dad got deported, leaving behind a trove of VHS porn in his closet. Gustavo wrote years later that he and his buddies spent the ages of 12-18 studying that porn as diligently as fanatics in some Taliban madrassa. By the time they went through all those tapes, the worst of their adolescence was behind them, they'd avoided getting jumped into or preyed on by gangs, and all of them are doing well now.

So: ban porn, and kids will die.

If they mention "Family", "Children" or "National Security" just know the real result is a further trampling of your civil rights and a step further down the road to a totalitarian regime.

Know what countries do monitor web and porn usage openly and aggressively currently?

North Korea and China.

Preach it my man.

So back in the 70s and 80s, you had your share of Sears and Monkey Ward catalogs that had the women's underwear/lingerie sections stuck together?

No doubt, and they probably pored over the Playboys too (my MIL had given me a subscription early on).

Hogwash, and everyone knows what it is.

The Surly CR is like an infectious disease and has been spreading to this forum for at least a year. There is a reason why the majority of the board regards it as a pariah. But Surly CR assholes are an entity among the general mob of assholes.

But think what you want. I don’t care.

This is not about protecting your kids.  Read what they are aiming for - they want all porn banned.  All of it:

Quote

This fall, Republican members of Congress asked the Department of Justice to “declare prosecution of obscene pornography a criminal justice priority.” Conservative commentators also argue that government power can — and should — put a stop to pornography for the benefit of the “common good.” By doing so, social conservatives argue that they can alter American culture itself.

Your examples of traffic laws, medical licenses, building codes, are way off.  Traffic laws?  They don’t need to invade your privacy to determine that you’re speeding. Same with the other stuff. Going after all porn would require a massive internet monitoring/filtering of everything you do with your computer, tablets, phones, etc.. We already get monitored enough as it is, and sometimes get our shit searched at the border

This is the kind of shit that China does with their internet.

This is the kind of thing that could get a place like Surly shut down.   There’s been plenty of porn posted on Surly and it’s previous incarnations.  Is it worth shutting Surly down because you can’t be bothered to monitor your own kids.

You do care.  That’s why you are deliberately trying to stir shit up, to get it moved to CR.   I don’t know if you hate porn, or aren’t happy that others like porn, and I don’t care, but you are the one dragging CR shit in here

Moves by fundamentalist politicians that affect all of us need to be called out by everybody, and it is worthy of being put in current events/Daily Texan    Especially when some Surly members are represented by one of those politicians.

Another very general gripe is why should this be a federal law at all?  One-size-fits-all rarely fits anyone.

I don't like this type of law at all, but if you are going to push for it, do it at the state level, give citizens a choice.

And it's no answer that it's easier to legislate once at the federal level or that only the feds could enforce such a thing.

I agree with your last paragraph.

I hope you’re right that nothing happens.  But William Barr, our Attorney General, gave a little speech at Norte Dame back in October, that made it clear that he lets his more extreme Catholic views influence his decision making, and we’ve seen plenty of stuff over the past few years we didn’t expect.

Your grandson didn’t die at the Alamo just to see Texan politicians try and get all porn banned nearly two centuries later.

What if Trump decapitated a baby on live television? Would we still only be able to reference that in CR?

Another generalized gripe:  when politicians make something a "law enforcement priority."

That leads to traveshamockeries like the War on Drugs and the War on Terror, and on a smaller scale, all the foolishness under the guise of ending Human Trafficking!!!111!!1 Like the Kraft sting and the Backpage prosecution discussed at length elsewhere.

I thought this issue is the same as the gun ownership thread. We should probably move that one to CR too, don’t want anyone’s political allergies acting up.

you know, you can alway just hit up imma to move shit.

Beg pardon,  but how is the gun owners thread similar in any way to a thread about some rightwingnuts suppressing the 1st Amendment. It is about gun hobbyists & the shooting sports, not controversial political topics.

There are already gun control debate threads in the CR.

And I am not whining to anyone to move your thread, just said it belonged in the CR in the first place.

This is a rich post coming from you. I actually agree with you on this, but seeing other shit some of the posters have made regarding the 2nd is laughable now that it’s the 1st.
