Who wants $15K to move to Topeka ?

Topeka and Wichita are very much looked down upon by the rest of the state.  And for very good reason.

pos Rep for Park, KS shout-out.  My wife’s grandparents still live there.  And every resident of that town will tell you think two minutes of meeting you that Park was once the largest city between Denver and Kansas City.

Very good hunting out that way as well.  I made the mistake of asking where to fish once though.

It's mid-sized blue collar city with much larger black and hispanic populations than the rest of state, which absolutely is a factor in many people's perception. There are pretty much 3 major job industries in Topeka and they all max out around $50-60k, state government drone, Healthcare, or factory worker, so anyone who gets an education generally leaves. Chain restaurants dominate the city, anything local just can't survive. The population has stayed the same since like 1960.

With all that said, there are only like 3 places in Kansas that I would call a better place to live. KC suburbs, Manhattan, and Lawrence. Wichita is just bigger Topeka and further away from decent cities. Might be bias on my end growing up there, but I can't imagine living in dodge city or some other bumble fuck town 5 hours from the nearest airport and sonic as the best restaurant in town.

And why was that a mistake? No lakes or decent rivers?

My wife is from Kansas and her family has a huge gathering every three years at her cousin's house in Wichita. The place is fucking huge and badass. No cookie cutter mcmansion bullshit. There's at least 6 entrances to the place. Marble throughout. The master stairway (there's 3 sets of stairs) is 6+ feet wide. I was in awe of the place. Put that house in Highland Park and it's 5-10 mil easy.

In Wichita? They bought it for 450k. My mass built home in the Dallas suburbs was just a tad cheaper.

Did you take the people train to Stubbville and drive from there?  Or get a cab ride maybe?

False.  Topeka is known to be the absolute worst place in the entire state.  Wichita has issues, but Topeka is Louisiana.

3000+ sf house for under 250k in a great neighborhood, zero crime, great schools.

I live 10 minutes from the airport, I can leave my home at 515am (6am flight) and be anywhere in the US by noon.

Fires? not here.  Earthquakes? Yes, can't feel em though.  Snow?  rarely.  Hail?  Every 5 years or so.

Tornadoes?  Have had 7 inside the county in the past 10 years.  Closest one I've ever been to was a F0 that was a mile away from where I was when I was 4.  Other than that, no closer than 10 miles.

We have wind, and a lot of it.  But very little pollution.

When visitors come to Wichita, most say the same thing..."people are so damn nice here".  I've never once heard one single person say that about Topeka.  I've never heard anyone who's been to Topeka say they enjoyed their visit......it just doesn't happen.

I unfortunately had to spend a lot of time in Topeka during the build of one of our hotels there.  I've lived in Louisiana multiple years.  I've lived in Wichita 75% of my life.  One of these is nothing like the others.

It's boring as fuck here, if you're looking for excitement....don't bother coming here.  This is a business town.  But the other side to that is, I know tomorrow is gonna be exactly like today aka, I, nor my family and loved ones, are not gonna have one single fucking problem navigating thru our day.

And that's a real nice peace of mind to have.

I agree with all this.

Personally, I thought Wichita sucked worse than Topeka, but admittedly( and thankfully) have a small sample size.

you just described most middle class suburbs of any growing metropolitan city in america. the benefit of those suburbs is that they are probably not in kansas.

How much did Wichita Chamber of Commerce pay you to move there and type this?    ;)

I was only repeating what all my in-laws say about cities of Wichita, but they're terrified of any town with more than 20,000 and anybody darker than Edgar Winter.  I've been to Wichita ~15 times or so for various reasons.  It's not that bad, but I could never live there.  But then, I could live in most places.   But of my wife's 10 aunts & uncles, 30+ cousins, and now a younger generation of a few dozen.  plus spouses, there's about 75 of them total, from her two sets of grandparents.  Only my wife and one of her sisters has ever lived outside of Kansas.  Maybe a K.C. suburb on the Missouri side or far Eastern Colorado for a spell here and there.  But they are die-hard pro-Kansas until the day they die.  And they are awkwardly prideful about Kansas, defending its total and complete ability to suck at everything, even farming.  They love every flaw and backwards ass characteristic of it.  The little godforsaken shitholes they live in in the Western half of the state that make the McCarthy novel "The Road" seem idyllic by comparison---they can't get enough of.  They just called short their trip here to see the grandkids so they could hurry back to it because they don't want to miss anything.  And as much as they all love their little corner of nothing, they all-to a person across the whole extended family---hate Topeka.  You say the wrong thing about Quinter or Wakeeney and it'll come to fisticuffs.  But if you call Topeka the rectum of the Midwest, and you'll get drinks bought for you all night.  It's a weird paradox.

So yeah, not moving to Topeka.  But there is a scam to be made there somewhere (as mentioned above).  Can't be that hard to physically show up there and apply for a job for you and your spouse.  Costs $500 for two airplane tickets and 1 night hotel.  You show up to some pre-set job interviews at some "who-gives-a-shit" little company.  You take your job offer to the Chamber along with your rental application for an apartment (no sense in going for the full $15k to buy a house, the process isn't worth the time).  But that's $10k for you and $10k for your wife.  I'm sure you need to prove your employment for awhile, but you work out with the company that you'll work remotely from Texas for half-pay for the first 90 days.  Then you collect your $20k and get terminated.

Sure if you want to pay 2,3,4x as much knock yourself out.  My living costs are 1k a month.  Mortgage/utilities/insurance/taxes.  I have zero stress because of it.  If business isn't great one month, not a big deal.  You put my home in Colorado Springs? Half a mil.  Oh, and since my living costs are low, I can afford to have property in Colorado.  Again, you want to stress about life?  Don't live here.

I know the type of people you're describing, and the feeling is mutual, I don't want to live in Wakeeney or Quinter either.  The DQ in Quinter is world famous though.

Outside of Wichita (metro) or the southwest side of KC, there's not another place in Kansas I would fucking live, so I get the distaste for most of the state.

Topeka does have one very cool thing, the Evel Knievel museum.  If you find yourself in Topeka, definitely check it out.

Personally, I've never touched foot on Kansas soil, but I did attend a conference in KC a couple of years ago.

I've got a cousin that I haven't seen in 25 years who lives on a dairy farm outside of Newton, who -- by all accounts -- has ballooned into a fucking whale. She was always an overbearing, prissy, judgmental bitch though (12 years older than me).

My former MIL was born and raised in Kansas, and she was...let's just say overly tidy, uptight, and would get upset over those inconsequential things.

I can well imagine western Kansas is much like the most upper reachess of the Panhandle and, quite frankly, those people seem more Midwestern than Texan.

I've spent some time for work in OKC and Tulsa, which are the closest I've come to Wichita. Tulsa had a certain je ne sais quoi, but the former was just...bland.

No offense to you or other Kansans, but fuck Kansas.
