All things SNL

Black Jeopardy is usually pretty good.  The Kate McKinnon skits about the alien abductions has been solid.

Yeah. Those are both great. Black Jeopardy is probably one of the anchor skits right now.

A rarely mentioned one that I like are the two versions of the Melissa Villesenor skits where the man wants to talk dirty and she takes it to absurd levels.

I think they did one during the Aziz Ansari ep and one during Donald Glover’s ep

Good lord, she was smoking hot.  I can't remember the last time I re-watched an SNL skit, but watched the Career Day with the oil baron this morning.  It's much funnier due to Driver's commitment to the role.  You can also tell when the writer's googled a foil for his character, and came up with H.R. Pickens from T. Boone Pickens.  Anyway, episode was a bit weak but here we go...

Was Seth Meyers trying to set the record for host in most sketches? I felt like I was looking at the Zoolander calendar where the scene and the costume change, but I'm looking at the same face. That's why he read the news and wasn't in skits.

Were there a couple of big technical gaffes, especially at end where pic of him pulling llama remained onscreen and then piano played more of closing than I knew existed and a horn tooted accidentally?

Paul Simon was interesting.

They did a weird thing that probably fooled some viewers and no doubt some low paid TV staffers whose job it is to run local spots during network breaks (much of it is automated, but humans can still screw it up).

Near the end of the show, they aired the llama photo, then after a few seconds, aired a taped bit featuring Chris Redd and Pete Davidson (Trees). I’m sure some markets missed it, because they usually have a local break after the artsy photo of the host pops up. I was fast forwarding on the DVR, but noticed something was up.

The local affiliate often screws something up during SNL, usually clipping the goodbye.

By the way, Davidson and Ariana announced they are done. No one saw that coming, right? 😜

Seth was in lots of sketches until he became head writer. I thought this week's show was above average. Paul Simon is a legend, but man his voice is weak now.

That's how it should have been handled. They dealt with it face to face, and everyone can shut up, now.

Correct. It also shows that a difference of opinion doesn't have to be met with pitchforks and torches. Have an honest conversation and try to understand why someone doesn't think exactly the way you do.

What a fucking concept.......

Both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the self-flagellating woman who forgot her tiny dolls were pretty fucking funny.

Was hoping for some Grandpa Joe bashing, since once Charlie wins the golden ticket, all of a sudden he goes from invalid to Fred Astaire. Grandpa Joe was a lazy, no-good, goldbricker.

Yeah, her comment on the photo making the rounds with his army buddies had me laughing pretty hard.  Netflix skit had promise, but kinda flaked a bit but was still funny.

H.W. Bush tribute was cool of them.

I thought SNL should have held their ground but glad they got some laughs out of it.

The guy has an eyepatch and looks like a pirate. If you can’t take a joke about it on SNL, the problem is you.

His problem wasn't that Pete made fun of his eyepatch, it was how Pete described it.  He literally said, "I guess he lost it in like war, or, whatever."

It was Pete's callous description of the injury that was the issue.  I think Pete's funny and I loved the bit they did together, but I've never heard anyone, even a stoned liberal misanthropic millennial, use the phrase, "In like war, or whatever."  It was beyond flippant, like after they wrote the bit (which again wasn't offensive to me)...I think Pete went and got high and then put his own "I'm too alt.comedy to even know how casualties happen in battle" so he goes and puts that tag on the end of it about like war or whatever.  That's the part that got people agitated.

Anyway, moving on.  I'm killing time waiting on takeout tonight and I realized it's been a long time since that made an SNL skit into a movie...And rightfully so!  Other than Blues Brothers, Wayne's World, and arguably Night at the Roxbury, they have all been abysmal failures in every respect and were not remotely funny.  But I know I'd pay to see a movie about Eric Trump & Donald Jr. based on their SNL appearances (you can obviously get cameos from Cecily as Melania, Baldwin as Trump, and maybe a few others...but the idea is to not let Baldwin dominate the film).  Not sure what would happen plot-wise in the movie, but the Act III reveal is that Eric was the one pulling the strings on the business and the presidency the whole time and just acting dumb.  He is actually brilliant, sinister, a puppet master and used his inheritance/salary to go off and secretly accumulate a $100bn net worth in private deals off the grid.  But lots of laughs and hijinks along the way.

It does, but his summation of why people were pissed at Pete was very thorough and informative.  I didn't realize that was why people had a problem with it.  I thought it was another case of an over-sensitive society getting their feelings hurt.  The "like war, or whatever" was a poor decision.   Hitman from a porn movie was pretty awesome though.

Yeah, in hindsight...skip my movie idea.  And again, it's not that some people didn't find the pornstar comment offensive.  Of course, there's always a chunk of folks to bitch about SNL.  But the thoughtful dissent was Pete's flip attitude about how he lost the eye.

You lost me on the movie idea when you made Eric a secret genius.  Normally, that would be a decent idea, but I hate the thought of losing 30 minutes of screen time with him as an idiot.  Trying to mimic Don's hand and facial movements kills me every time.

Yeah, the movie woulda been mostly that.  Which I would piss my pants at.  But you know Loren Michaels, he loves a long-winded twist at the end that doesn't maintain the laughs.  Been that way for every movie since Blues Brothers/Wayne's World.

Have you watched most of the SNL movies?  They get fucking awful half-way through.  Forget the idea, christ.  It's what I think about waiting at a Jason's Deli and I can't have anything to drink while I wait.  Anyway, loved the bi-partisan skit on WU.  Carrell's video on Bezos was awesome.  This past week was below average overall.

I'm not seeing a single comment on the Steve Carell episode.   Does that mean everybody else thought that episode was total dogshit too?

I concur. All of it except for the Bezos short but made me cringe. Especially the space skit where they are eating sentient corn assholes or something.

After watching it one more time, Dad Christmas was pretty funny.  Obviously struck a chord with me being a child of divorce even though I never did the second holiday with Dad and girlfriend.  But McKinnon rocked the "is she younger?  No?  She's older, whuh?"  role.  BUt the fridge and map to the house with no beach were well done.

Anyway, show does seem to be dipping a bit from its most recent peak of about 1.5-2.0 years ago.  Christmas special last night finally introduced some new material after basically broadcasting the same shit for a decade.  The here's what happens when you go back to your hometown mass deal made me laugh even harder than the first time since reminds me of in-law church.  Wife somehow found it less funny.  Mark of something I suppose...

Curious to see if they do anything with the Bush funeral this weekend.  Hard to deftly handle so soon in a comedic way.  I don't think they'd pick on him, but rather how the media, public, Democrats, and Trump have reacted in the last few days.  And H.W. was really the first one to engage the show in a fun way.  they picked on Ford and Carter in their earlier, more risque days.  Took on Reagan and he sorta acknowledged them once or twice.  But it was H.W. that really took note of it and was a good sport.  I think they appreciate that.  And I'd like to think they'll do something around that space, in a tasteful way, in the next week or two.
