Y'all can hate TLJ all you want, but it told an actual well thought out story and took chances, introducing changes to the Star Wars universe that was interesting...this movie just destroyed all that because of a very vocal minority, while also trying to appease everyone, and in the end didn't appease anyone.

this is how you troll boys, well done

It was not good.  They just basically spent an entire movie retconning TLJ and it was a huge mistake.  Just full of fan service.

Very disappointed in JJ for how he finished this.  And I liked what he did with TFA.  If he had just done something similar to that I'd have been much happier.

Oh, and fuck mulletpelini and his Ewok loving ass.  Just knew they sneak those little bastards in somehow.

Dude.  A vocal minority??!!  Lol.  TLJ has an audience score of 43 with hundreds of thousands of reviews.  It was a shitshow of a movie.

Yes, let's use those scores when it benefits us. We use critics scores when it agrees with us, and ignore them when they don't...the same with audience scores.  The people on social media and take the time to vote/write reviews on sites like that are not a true reprensentation of everyone, never have been.

The same way the negative reviews are much more common for EVERYTHING than positive reviews are.  People that are upset are much more likely to voice their opinion than everyone else that doesn't have that same kind of hatred.

And this is all besides the point, this movie was not good, and it had to do with all the decisions JJ made.  Incoherent plot, way to fast paced, and the idea to just destroy everything that happened in the last movie.  Just stupid.

The movie wasn't as good as it could have been because JJ literally had a shit sandwich to deal with in this trilogy.  He baked the bread, Rian slapped the shit in between it.

I am a huge Star Wars fan, even loved Phantom Menace and RotS.  Really enjoyed TFA and TLJ.

tRoS sucked.  Balls.  It suffered from some of the same flaws as TFA (namely too many characters and accompanying storylines).  The first half of the movie was so fast paced it felt like watching a movie in fast forward.  Major events in the plot were rushed, glossed over, or forgotten.  HOW THE FUCK DID THE EMPEROR SURVIVE?  WHY IS HE JUST NOW REVEALING HIMSELF TO REN AND THE FIRST ORDER?  WHY ARE THERE FORCE POWERS THAT RENDER THE PLOTS OF PREVIOUS MOVIES COMPLETELY NULL?

Finally, the scenes with Leia were downright depressing for all the wrong reasons.

In the end, 1-3 and 7-9 will be remembered as wasted opportunities.

I'm seeing the movie sometime this weekend but really don't remember all that much from TLJ. Why do people pan it so much, and what do you mean about Luke giving a FU to Rian Johnson? Guess I need to watch it again.

Hamill himself has been very vocal on his disagreements about Rian’s direction of TLJ. Luke throwing Anikans and also being Luke’s old lightsaber over the shoulder like it meant nothing to him was the dumbest thing Rian could have done for that moment.

Force Awakens - A
TLJ - D+
Rise of Jedi - B

Rey and Kylo are the easy highlight of RoJ. Fortunately no giant mistakes were made like in TLJ. Kept things relatively straight forward after the mistakes of TLJ.

After TFA I expected so much more of this series. I think Rey and Kylo (and Poe to lesser extent) were an extremely solid foundation, should have been better.

Biggest complaint was the constant use of ghost people

The first 6 movies were supposedly about the Skywalkers. And I mean they were, but Palpatine did orchestrate the whole thing until he died. I think it was fine that they brought him back and made Rey his granddaughter, but shouldn’t they have worked on that plot line in the 2nd movie? That is a huge development that was explained away in mere sentences. I mean they could have spent a lot of the 2nd movie developing that.

Also thought it was bullshit that Ben was basically thrown in a cave. He should have been the one to kill Palpatine and then died. Rey could have even been turned/hypnotized by Palpatine for a minute. Then could have avoided that stupid Rey/Ben scene at the end. But no it had to be all about Rey.

JJ probably did and left some bread crumbs in the 2nd movie for just this conclusion.  Again, there was at minimum an outline, and perhaps a script left behind for Rian, but he dismissed almost all of it and decided to take a left turn on his own.  I think most of us agree, the sequels should have been one vision and one coherent story but when they diverged with different directors, they did the story and the fans a disservice.

Wanted to see it for the schadenfreude.  Just got back.  Wasn't disappointed.

JJ is incapable of making movies any other way.  Here's a thing!  Quick!  Here's another thing!  But wait!  Here's something/someone you remember!  And something else you remember!  No time to stop and think!  Go, go, go, go!  All while hitting every predictable plot point you know he's going to hit.

The characters matter so little you can have one of the main bad guys in this trilogy reveal he's a spy for the Resistance and then be unceremoniously killed off 30 seconds later.

I was literally falling asleep during this.  Almost missed the Evil Rey part.  Which would have been interesting and cool if, ya know, Rey actually went evil.  So of course we're not doing that.

I ain't even mad.  It's just nonsensical goofiness with zero weight to it.  And the point people have made on this trilogy versus the Prequels is bang on.  The Prequels are garbage, but at least Lucas had a clear idea of what he wanted to do and stuck to it through three films.  These movies are so disjointed and all over the place that it just becomes silly.  Disney really needed someone with some brains at the top running this whole thing from start to finish.  I doubt with their market-tested, please as many people as possible, while selling as many toys as possible MO that we'd have gotten some all-time great films, but it would have been better than this.

Save us, Dave Filoni.  You're our only hope!

Bob Iger bought the franchise from Lucas after Lucas had a public tantrum because fans hated his movies.

But Iger isn't a visionary. He just acquires things that make money, to make money. So he put Kennedy in charge.

But Kennedy isn't a visionary either. She's a control freak who was more concerned with messaging than creating great stories and characters.

I don't believe anyone associated with Disney Star Wars was ever really in love with Lucas' Star Wars the way the fans were. They just wanted to profit from it.

This movie was like the last one. You can watch it once and be done with it.

Silly story and silliness throughout. Nothing made sense. Didn't really care about anyone. No sense of wonder or mystery. It was pretty, though.

It's just hard for me to understand why they can't make a compelling story or characters. It's like making a Western and just assuming that if you put a guy with a white hat and a guy with a black hat and give them guns, you can't go wrong. Instead of creating a narrative with a strong story and relatable, flawed characters with depth and empathy, they give you live-action cartoons and provide details in text crawls and throw away dialogue about things that happen off screen.

Very meh. I expected nothing less.

I fucking love you drew, not as much as you love golden showers from Wicket, but close.

I haven't seen it yet, don't care about spoilers.  You could tell me every fucking line from the movie and it would still be different to me visually when I see it.

My arc with the OT was 7-13.  My youngest son is the same with these.  I wish he'd gotten the quality of movies I got.  His interest is starting to wane a bit, I blame it on that last piece of shit mostly.....even he was calling out what a fucking watery dump it was.

3 minutes into R1 he whispered to me, "this is gonna be good"

You're no drew kiddo......you're no drew.

edit:  Someone mentioned the lack of a bad guy and that the emperor was the only option after Snoke got sliced and diced.  What about Maul?  He was a pretty bad mofo and made an appearance in Solo.  Unless he's been killed off somewhere later in canon that I haven't seen yet (Rebels?)  Like it would matter anyways, no one ever goes away.....

Outside of DV, Maul was baddest mofo imo.  Emperor was always too jokerish for me.

Wow, I didn't realize drew wrote for Vulture

I sure hope they do a DV movie, hopefully a series.  The comic series was fantastic, if you like comics and haven't read them, I highly suggest them.  Would be fantastic on the big screen.

Any significance to the golden lightsabre at the end?

A Jedi isn't truly a Jedi until he or she constructs their own lightsaber complete with a distinct Kyber Crystal. Yellow is a rare color. And Disney can sell yellow Rey lightsabers at the Disney Store and theme parks.

Here.  It's canon, so and may end making it into the live action Obi-Wan series.

Probably not much.  In canon, they are the color Jedi guardians use, they generally guard temples and shit....

Also explain to me how an ancient sith dagger can be made so that it can pinpoint the precise location of a vault in the wreckage of the second death star as long as you're standing in the right place.  Like what the fuck kind of half ass bullshit is that JJ

When I saw it, I figured it was a key in the more literal sense.

I’m more surprised that there were no yellow savers available for Christmas. Seems like something you can release, make money, and drum up some discussion without giving up any plot.

I had a yellow lightsaber as a kid.  It was awesome.

From Wookiepedia:

"Around 4000 BBY, lightsaber crystals were used to indicate a Jedi's chosen class. Blue indicated a Jedi Guardian, a Jedi who used the Force on a more physical level. Green indicated a Jedi Consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the Force and fight the dark side at its heart. Yellow indicated a Jedi Sentinel, a Jedi who honed his or her skills in a balance of combat and scholarly pursuits."

So blue = good with lightsaber, green = strong in the force, yellow = Sentinels balanced in both.

Somebody already touched on it, but the real significance is Rey made her own lightsaber which is supposed to signify her training is complete.

how did toy makers know way back then that the last skywalker would also have a yellow sword ?

It's a SW mystery which has never been definitively solved.  In different pics (dependent on when they were released), Luke and Obi-Wan have yellow lightsabers and Vader actually has a purple one in some pics!  Take that Samuel L.  You weren't the first....

Wow. You subverted my expectations, Rian J style.  I thought I’d find you here breathlessly apologizing for this turd, but you are spot the fuck on.  Rian is 10x the filmmaker JJ is.  Abrams is such a wanna-be Spielberg overrated fucking hack wanker. He’s an imitator who can frame cool shots.

The 1.5x speed  National Treasure / Uncharted plot-a-long was bad. The retconning (Leia’s saber) was confusing. But the Palpy shit was just egregiously terrible. Everything from his vaguely explained resurrection, to the giant army appearing out of nowhere, to the Rey reveal, to who the hell are these faceless cult followers cheering in the stands?

This movie had fucking diss tracks calling out the previous movie. Lol! I was like... is this really happening right now? A directors’ beef on screen? Christ, what a mess. Even with all its flaws, and casino scenes and mishandling of Luke, TLJ is still the most interesting film of the trilogy.  A better filmmaker like Rian Johnson should have been given the reins from the start.
