It just amazes me that of all the smart and capable people we have in this nation we still found a way to elect the worst among us as our leader. Who do I blame for this shit?

the fact that Biden is not leading by 20 plus points in every state tells you that the idiots we have are lower then the president

The real nexus goes back to 1950's US propaganda and identity and nationalism built on things that weren't at all what made us great and unique as a country.  Essentially, the Republican ideal America was rubber-stamped when we had whites-only water fountains.

The call themselves Patriots, but they're not willing to give one thing up to lift the country up as a whole.  Their beliefs are all mottos and dog signals that they don't even believe in.  They say they believe in states rights (which is their white-washed excuse for the civil war), but they don't really believe in states rights.  They say they believe in small government, but the military is part of the government.  They call themselves fiscal conservatives, but have never met a tax cut they didn't like.

They are for themselves.  They are not Patriots.  And their national identity relates to demonizing those of us would have the audacity to seek progress.

You know.

Traitors.

I'm relatively new to politics, only starting to pay any attention in the last few years when a psychopath took over. I get that democrats aren't some saints who are going to fix everything and the democratic party apparatus is very poorly maintained garage sale tricycle. But people on here talk like being a Democrat pre-Trump is some Scarlet Letter. "I'm a conservative, I voted for all these Republicans until Trump, but now..." or whatever, like it's some evidence of being sensible and not some bleeding-heart liberal. But were conservatives ever really not overtly racist, environment-destroying, greedy shitheads? Because that's all I've really seen from that party. Keep gays from getting married, sell off public land to the highest bidder, focus entirely on the unborn rather than the born somewhere else, and ensure that black/immigrant voices and votes are minimized. The whole federal spending thing is clearly a joke. I'm not proud to be a Democrat, it's not like they have been routinely ahead of the curve as far as these things are concerned. But I'm sure as shit proud to have never called myself a Republican. This fucking bullshit didn't start 1/20/16.

focusing on the negatives, or "voting against things" has won them a lot of elections.  you gotta stick with what works.  fear works.

To a certain extent, that's the nature of conservatism.  But it's gotten way out of hand.  At some point, the GOP stopped having less-radical (and costly and intrusive) ideas and started promoting the idea of actually "turning back the clock," and it wasn't just politically, it was like every damn thing.  Bortion, education, socially, literally let's try to recreate the 50s.

The last of your list was the preferred end.  The others you list were the means.

You have to wonder how long that speech really was to edit it down to that coherent little soundblurb.   OR I have to think they've got some Trump impersonator making the voiceovers for these ads.  No way he's that coherent.  Never heard him complete a sentence, much less a whole lot of them.

https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2020/06/26/does-trump-know-why-he-wants-another-term-489649

Quote

SEAN HANNITY traveled with President DONALD TRUMP to Green Bay, Wis., for a Fox News town hall, and asked him this good question: “What’s at stake in this election as you compare and contrast, and what are your top priority items for a second term?” This is as standard a question as a sitting president can get -- why should we give you another four years, and compare yourself to your opponent.

We've all seen his rambling answer, so....

Quote

DOES TRUMP have any idea why he wants another term in office? The crux of this answer is that he knows people in D.C. now -- as in, the first four years were practice? Huh?

And on this, from that noted liberal bastion WSJ:

Quote

WSJ ED BOARD: “The Trump Referendum”: “As of now Mr. Trump has no second-term agenda, or even a message beyond four more years of himself. His recent events in Tulsa and Arizona were dominated by personal grievances. He resorted to his familiar themes from 2016 like reducing immigration and denouncing the press, but he offered nothing for those who aren’t already persuaded.

Quote

“Mr. Trump’s advisers have an agenda that would speak to opportunity for Americans of all races—school choice for K-12, vocational education as an alternative to college, expanded health-care choice, building on the opportunity zones in tax reform, and more. The one issue on which voters now give him an edge over Mr. Biden is the economy. An agenda to revive the economy after the pandemic, and restore the gains for workers of his first three years, would appeal to millions.

Quote

“Perhaps Mr. Trump lacks the self-awareness and discipline to make this case. He may be so thrown off by his falling polls that he simply can’t do it. If that’s true he should understand that he is headed for a defeat that will reward all of those who schemed against him in 2016. Worse, he will have let down the 63 million Americans who sent him to the White House by losing, of all people, to ‘Sleepy Joe.’”

And an important part of recreating that time period is always having a boogeyman or two.  Anything and anyone who threatens you is a socialist, or commie, or a foreigner who wants to destroy your way of life.  It’s easy to get away with doing nothing but lining your own pockets when your supporters think everyone else is out to get them, any changes are bad and all your problems are someone else’s fault.

It still blows my mind every once in a while.  When you take a step back and look at it objectively, only a populace of absolute degenerates and morons would put someone like this in charge.  Good work us.

It's insanity. I'd have to dig up the articles but after Brown v Board of Edu., the Civil Rights Act and at the beginnings of the exodus of whites to the suburbs, the bussing issues, the proliferation of religious schools in the south (to escape 'others') etc schools had very promising results with educational outcomes and the lower SES students of all races. This was all demographics improving, not an average wherein the wealthier whiter demographics balance out the 'presumably' lower SES  and minority students. (A common complaint/excuse for fleeing--"they'll" drag my child down) People absolutely dug in their heels and the schools are more segregated and worse off now than at the dismantling of the blatantly racist policies.

If there was not a corrupt Administration in office and a political party that drives @BrickHorn comments regarding an explicit agenda, I would argue that the whole idea of school districts needs to be revisited. I have witnessed some of the worst behavior in my life during school board meetings, committees, rezonings, elections, and sports contests and amazingly enough very few of the instances had anything to do with education and helping ALL students learn and grow.

Donald Trump is a symptom, but the causes of our ailment must be addressed.

The Obamacare petition to the Supreme Court is either a hail mary to his base or an admission that he knows he's about to get his ass beat so they need to burn it all down on the way out. As someone who used ACA to sign up for healthcare after my wife lost her job which supplied our family's insurance, I'm thrilled this shitbag wants to throw us off our health insurance during the middle of a pandemic.

Except economically. In the 50s, there were balanced budgets (meaning Ike didn't infinitely expand the defense budget), GI Bill, Middle Way and other (gasp) social programs and safety nets that enabled booming economic growth, and wages that were far less disparate than modern "conservatives" could stomach (leading to far less wealth disparity).

They want it to be like the 50s socially, but not in ways related to actually running the country. And to an earlier poster's point, this didn't start with Trump - he is the inevitable outcome of decades-long strategy.

He believes he won all 3 debates against Hillary Clinton.  He got destroyed in 2, and the only reason the 3rd could have been called a draw was because she was just not on point that night.

There is definitely an element of "if I can't win, burn it down on the way out" going on here.  And if he really feels that way, if you think our COVID fate is bad now...just wait.  Trump will literally think "if they don't love me, then they're worthless and deserve to die."  He will actively pursue a path that kills Americans, because that's what a petulant child would do.

And definitely this.  They have this idealized vision of the 50s that is based on all of the bad shit (a white man could own a house and work a nifty job, and those other types knew their place and weren't really competition) and none of the actually effective shit that helped the country prosper broadly for decades after the war.  If it's bad, they like it; if it was actually helpful, they oppose it.  It's actually incredible to watch how naked they are about it.

Someone close to him needs to pull a mind trick on him and convince him that he needs to resign. "It will make you look very powerful and very strong sir. Only someone weak like Obama would finish out their term. You don't want to look like Obama do you?".

I've pointed it out before, but it bears repeating:

In my lifetime, the percentage of Americans who identify as "non-Hispanic whites" has dropped from 85% to 63%.  It is projected to drop below 50% in 2043.

Racism and the palpable reality of no longer being the majority race in the US drives almost all Republican support in the heartland.  Abortion?  Nah.  That's a convenient place for most to hang their hat because it's less onerous to claim one is for the sanctity of life than admit one hates niggers and spics.  Fifty years prior to Roe V Wade, there was a concerted effort among many Christian leaders to help provide MORE access to abortion.  The Catholic Church was opposed to Roe V Wade, but protestant leaders were largely silent.  Even the Southern Baptists passed resolutions as late as 1976 affirming the rights of women to have abortions.  The tide started to turn as desegregation became the rule, not the exception, even though segregation in public schools had been illegal since 1954.  Evangelicals like Jerry Falwell created private segregated schools, but faced a stiff argument that they could not hold tax-exempt status, because they were discriminating on the basis of race.  They needed to grow support in order to maintain a segregated society, and landed on abortion as the issue around which they could rally support.

In the end, it all comes down to race and racism.  That's it.  At the top, it's about whatever it takes to maintain power and grow wealth, but the most common weapon to keep the base in line is their fear of black and brown people.

I'm not sure that's fair, because you have to identify why "destroy" means to different people. Because for such a huge fucking chunk, him lurking and breathing and answering jack shit while being dismissive was a resounding victory. I know some of those people. We all do, or did. You're evaluating victory based on your own metrics, and the things you find important. And this isn't me critiquing you. Just reminding everyone what we see every day: 40-45% of Americans aren't evaluating things on same set of values and metrics as the other half of the country.

So, what level of trouble can this ad get into, because i'm 99% certain that most of the commentary is Fox News people talking about Joe Biden, not trump. Or way out of context (specifically Tucker Carlson saying he feels bad for him probably referring to all the shit going on in America he has to deal with).
