Donald Trump 2020

I was disheartened last Father's day weekend as the immediate family AIRBNB'd a "ranch" in the hill country. It was three days spent almost entirely outside in the sun, in the overly-chlorinated pool and in separate beds for everyone. 8 kids romping around in the pool, chasing lizards and just generally having a good time. Everyone there was "over" Covid, but at least there was no interaction with anyone outside the family group.
My Boomer father and my Aunt were there, who I know to be good people of character and "Christian". It was so disappointing to observe the mental gymnastics used to still support Trump. For my father (Doctor) it has to do with ACA negatively affecting his income and the abortion issue. My Aunt has had just the right BS targeted at her: Isaiah 45. She contends that theses verses are interpreted as how God can use a bad man (Persian king Cyrus) to do his will. I can see that interpretation. Then she said it was a miracle Trump came along as the 45th president, which I of course reject. There is no arguing with these people so I don't try.
I leaned Republican many years ago. There is no path that I can foresee for the GOP to ever win back my vote. I also feel guilty about voting pub a couple decades ago; I was wrong and I admit that.
This man is a clear criminal and traitor.
This weekend let's just try to communicate with those who will listen in a non-combative way, as well as listen to them. If each one of us just help change the mind of someone on the fence (admittedly not many) or get a Democrat to be sure to vote. That's where we win to change our course - the well-informed voter who is disillusioned and may just sit at home. Don't let them.

Welcome to The Resistance.

This is northeast Texas in a nutshell. I'm talking Louie Gohmert territory. They don't care about tax breaks for the ultra wealthy or for giant corporations. They care about the Dems want to redistribute the wealth to minorities who want free stuff so we have to vote for Republicans.

The funny part being, if there is a redistribution of wealth, the vast majority of Trump supporters would be on the receiving end, not the giving end.

Welcome to The Resistance.

Thanks. I fully embrace it.

I was raised in a conservative "Christian" home and while I do respect and admire a lot of Jesus' ministry I wholly reject organized religion today.

the messiah was a bad man?  i don't think i would argue against that because, as the builder of the world's largest empire, he was almost certainly a butcher beyond compare.  but i don't think that's why your aunt would say he was a bad man.

Her point was just that a powerful non-believer was chosen by God to be the vehicle of his will so that justified voting for him. You've probably heard that I won the Bible Bowl in fifth grade but I admit the beer and bong resin have clouded my comprehension now.

So, thank y’all for allowing me to hang around. I’m still a BamaChick through and through so I’ll never assimilate fully.

But I have faith y’all won’t stick me in a cage and deport me.

Hey, it's cool. You can't help where you were born. Some of us were blessed, others not so much. But nobody's holding a gun to your head to make you stay there. (I keeed)

This, folks...is a fucking cult. Do you ever remember any shit like this for any other president? Not even close. It is their collective identity, which makes it 1000x more dangerous. Because you can change your mind; you can’t change your identity. They would rather die than consider the possibility that they are wrong.

This is a nihilist death cult. It’s the most dangerous moment in our modern history.
You just described me

And my wife. My ORDAINED MINISTER wife. In conversation last night, touching on the malignant, sociopathic identity of American Christianity, she said “maybe it’s time for The Church to die.” Her theology continues on, making the point that Christians are an Easter people, and death and resurrection are a necessary part of the story. The church has to die, if it is to have any chance to live.

Please tell your wife that, should the church she will develop need another ordained person on staff,

Me too, although I don't think I really learned anything about what Jesus actually taught or what it means to be a Christian from the First Baptist Church of Denton. It was just John 3:16 on infinite loop.

And that was the point that I made with her last night.  American Christianity is obsessed with WORSHIPING Christ.....they have little interest in following him.  Christianity is not a faith, it's not a religion, it's a WAY.*  That way is following Christ, being His hands and feet on earth (Emmanuel, God is with us -- that is what we are called to be, God's hands and feet, creating the Kingdom here on Earth).  Christians should be working to be Christ-like, not ostentatious Christ idolators.  Christianity is a humble Way, not a gilded exhibition of pride.

* This is one of the reasons my wife loves The Mandalorian.  She really thinks that Christianity would be so much better off if each service began and ended with "This is The Way."

Agreed. Even the casual fans applaud it because it owns the libs. I can't even understand what they have to be so excited about. What recent policy? The only thing I keep coming back to is he makes okay to be a vulgarian and an asshole.

The Rolling Stones are taking “further steps” to prevent Donald Trump from using their music at his rallies after the president’s campaign ignored the previous cease-and-desist letters. “This could be the last time Trump uses any Jagger/ Richards songs on his campaigns,” the band’s rep said in a statement.

In a statement Saturday, the band announced that their legal team and performing rights organization BMI sent another warning to Trump’s campaign that, if the president continued to use the band’s music, he could face a lawsuit.

“The BMI have notified the Trump campaign on behalf of the Stones that the unauthorized use of their songs will constitute a breach of its licensing agreement,” the Rolling Stones rep added. “If Donald Trump disregards the exclusion and persists then he would face a lawsuit for breaking the embargo and playing music that has not been licensed.”

Despite previous warnings during the 2016 presidential campaign — “The Rolling Stones do not endorse Donald Trump. You Can’t Always Get What You Want was used without the band’s permission,” the Stones tweeted in July 2016 — the Trump team still played the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” at the president’s lightly attended rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 20th.

As BMI told Deadline, “The Trump campaign has a Political Entities License which authorizes the public performance of more than 15 million musical works in BMI’s repertoire wherever campaign events occur. There is a provision, however, that allows BMI to exclude musical works from the license if a songwriter or publisher objects to its use by a campaign. BMI has received such an objection and sent a letter notifying the Trump campaign that the Rolling Stones’ works have been removed from the campaign license, and advising the campaign that any future use of these musical compositions will be in breach of its license agreement with BMI.”

Quote

The Tulsa rally similarly drew the ire of Tom Petty’s family, who similarly stated after the Trump rally featured “I Won’t Back Down,” “Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind. Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.”

I love that a Texas Longhorn football forum is full of smart progressive clear eyed Americans who hate Trump and love freedom.

and there’s a few of us who are not only smart, clear-eyed and progressive, but also graduates of schools whose football team have and will continue to kick your fucking ass.

If you're referring to Texas, you may want to review the series record.  Hint: Last two meetings Texas 35-20, LSU 45-38.  Congratulations on your one game win streak in a series you're losing.  Oh, and biggest beatdown in the series is Texas 34-0.

But, but, they are flawed and imperfect!  They don't have to try to follow Christ, they just need to worship the idol that is Christ.

So is every bad man doing God's will or just the one(s) she likes? Maybe he's just a piece of shit and not actually doing God's will. Unless she thinks putting kids in cages, ignoring a pandemic that's killing Americans by the tens of thousands, or turning the National Guard on peaceful protestors in order to clear the way for a photo op in front of a church he doesn't attend while holding a bible he's never read is "God's will."

Christians just LOVE to turn to the Old Testament when they want to justify their darker impulses. Heaven forbid she should consult the teachings of Jesus. Maybe she should revisit Matthew 25.

I believe the Church is still alive and will not be killed.  That is not to say that the Church is not dead in most congregations in America.  Most individuals claiming Christianity today in America want no part of seeking to be the least for the benefit of others.  Christ’s church has been redefined by most clergy, not lost and much, much, much smaller.

"As Trump Supporters We Will Show Respect and Courtesy to others."  What in the actual fuck?

Also like that they adopted dotard's random capitalization.

Csb: I was in POC last weekend.  Went into the convenience store to buy a bag of ice, put my mask on as I went in.  Literally the first person I see gets in front of me, makes eye contact, rolls his eyes, and gives me a loud “pfffft”.  Then 2 guys see me and start belting “I won’t back down” by Tom Petty.  Which I didn’t understand until the next day when I saw Trump had used that song for his rally the previous night.  The front beach last Saturday was a parade of Trump golf carts and Trump dually pickups.  Craziest thing was the most common flag said “Trump 2020: No More Bullshit”.  Interpreting that is scary no matter how you see it.

In one of the most darkly comedic displays fathomable, this is actually a phenomenon which Trump fanatics proudly note without a single hint of irony.

"How on earth can anyone think Trump won't win in a landslide? You ever see a cigarette boat driven by a Guy Fieri-looking 50-year old wearing white Oakleys flying a 50-foot Democrat flag??!?!"

"Have you ever seen a single panel van covered front to back in Biden stickers and schizophrenic bible verses? Hah, you wish!"

"You think Sleepy Joe could fill a small basketball arena in Tornado Alley with elderly evangelical rednecks, jort-wearing conspiracy theorists, cringe-y college republican frat dudes, and assorted social media grifters? Dream on!"

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess the college republicans are having a difficult time recruiting new members right now.

Not to derail this thread too much, but honest question: does she mean The Church in a global sense or just in the United States? I can plainly see what The Church is doing in the US and I completely agree that it is 180 degrees from what The Christ preached. But I'm curious on her feelings on the rest of the world. I grew up in the Methodist Church (and if I ever return to Christianity, that's where I will go) and I'm pretty familiar with their issues over ordaining homosexuals. Is it the same issue facing other denominations? I'm just curious by what she means "The Church"? I assume she means the global church, but I would be interested in her thoughts on Christianity outside the US. And just to make it clear, she's the smart one in the relationship, so I want to hear her thoughts. Not her thoughts, filtered through you. :)
