And yet UT has both won a national title and played in a national title game more recently than your "school".  You do win the Big XII a lot, you just faceplant on the national stage every time.  Congrats?  Blowu is certainly a nice regional power.

They're great regionally, but fail nationally.

There’s some misleading shit here. I don’t remember the GA game that well, but losing to ‘bama by 11 was a game that was never, never in doubt and a team that took their foot off the gas in the second half. Then they scored at will when necessary. Anyone who watched that game knows how it went. It was a raw buttfucking starting at 21-0 in the first quarter.

we understand your stance, however. We recently fisted Georgia for 3.5 quarters and they scored some garbage points and we had to listen to the media spin how close the score was...well the score ain’t the story. Scoring in garbage time don’t make a shit. And the garbage time in that bama game was two and a half quarters.

GA might have been a legit game though. Then again we just haven’t found GA all that impressive a team but that’s just our opinion, man.

Georgia vs OU went to overtime with the Dawgs blocking a FG to win it. So, yeah it was close.

Bama vs OU was not close, but OU's OL wasn't to blame. LSU vs OU was a disaster (Sooner perspective), but OU's OL wasn't to blame.

I think cacti's point was that OU's fixed the physicality problem on offense, and the playoff games are examples of this. Defense is obviously the issue.

While physicality is usually associated with defense, you can’t ignore the fact that an outstanding offense doesn’t just depend on great skill position play, it also depends on—more often than not—being physical and winning the line of scrimmage. And for several years, OU has done just that. Generally, their quarterbacks have time to throw; their running backs have holes; and their receivers have time to run routes.

I should caveat this each time I say but I agree completely and you won't find a person with more respect for Bill Bedenbaugh as an OL coach and developer. I hate that fucker. His lines are consistently among the best in the nation and he can do it with a random assortment of guys with varied skillsets. I truly hoped that Littrell would unfuck his shit and get a big gig and steal Bill B, but no such luck.  I also think in the past that OU had some of the best blocking WR in the nation. I think Riley's offense and the guys he's targeted as recruits seem to have changed that dynamic at WR  it's just a different scheme and a different type of player and so you get a lot more explosive plays from the WRs and give up a bit of solid ground gaining second level blocking in the run and screen game. I think Riley could supplement some of that loss at WR blocking by taking some bigger RBs that are kind of brutes, not unlike what we've seen from Baylor under Briles. I don't know if he'd give up the playmaking type for the extra power though, it appears not, and his offense is his baby and it's incredibly effective.

You are right though,  it's all about the defense and it's inability to compete with comparable talent. I think it's partially player issues (as did Grinch), I think it's partially scheme based (SpeedD's downside). Further, I also have a lot of respect for the results that Schmidt had as a S&C coach and absolutely ZERO respect for the job that Bennie Wylie does. I think those factors along with the sheer number of reps and focus that the O receives in Riley's system severely limit the ability of the defense to have a true physical identity. It's best case, by design, is to disrupt and get off the field a few times for quick change offensive opportunities. That's the focus and I get it, esp combined with that potent quick strike offense. It just leads to being less physical - which leads to being the worst RZ defense in the country.

I mean haven’t we all known and been saying defense and defensive physicality is the biggest issue?

I wouldn’t rush to say you’ve “fixed” the physicality on offense issue because you played GA close. 21-0 versus bama in one quarter and the entirety of the LSU game say otherwise offensively. 1 game doesn’t prove you’re back or have fixed a problem definitively. Ask a Texas fan.

Vs Bama, OU fell behind early bc they were trying to force the ball to an injured Marquis Brown. When they shelved Brown and went back to their usual packages, they scored on the Tide (but they were already down 3 TDs). Hurts is a fantastic runner and probably has a place in the League as a short yardage specialist, but he crippled OU's passing offense in multiple ways: self-sacking, slow decision-making, inability to throw in tight windows. Even a dominant effort by the OU OL would have been wasted because of this.

I'm not interested in litigating those games years later so I'll hang up and listen after this.

Jason White gets hurt and can’t throw a forward pass in 2004. OU loses by 7.

Colt gets hurt against Alabama in 2010 after moving the ball dominately prior to injury.

Demarco Murray gets hurt in 2009 on a kick return in game already won that keeps him out of the national championship game. OU has several red zone trips ending in goal line stands by Florida.

Could easily have been 5 nattys in 10 years between the two. Hopefully Herman gets his shit together because it brings more respectability to the conference. Iron sharpens iron.

Of course you’re leaving off the fact that we waxed that ass in 2008, yet OU got to play for the championship and shit the bed, again.

Insert Leper Messiah joke here ________.

It's fucking annoying that we can't get at least a couple more Sooner fans to come and actually talk recruiting (like quigley) without going full butthurt and getting crowdsourced. they read surly constanlty and post updates from us all the time, and talk shit about me, but I have yet to neg a single one. (that I can think of)  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*31-page thread flinging poop at class, team, coaches, program, school, state*

"Why can't they come here and be nice?"

And yet, here I am.  What recruiting are we gonna talk about?  I don't trust Spray Tan yet and saying stuff like that to Edwards is a rookie mistake.  But the more reliable OU outlets see this as two holes for two pegs:  OU and UT will split Wheaton and LJ Johnson, one way or the other. Is there more to it?

I mean I’m not ignoring your post. But I’m not sure what else to say. As a Texas fan I know how to equivocate and explain away not just losses, but entire stretches of a coach’s career, believe me. But a trend is a trend man. You say self sacking, I saw overmatched athletically and/or schematically. You saw slow decision making, I say fast players or Lincoln Riley can’t develop a QB further than what he gets, etc. Generally speaking I’m not sure blaming a players physical limitations (throwing into tight windows) is the best tact when the conversation started about a team’s toughness, which is also a physical limitation, etc. I think we’re just at the impasse point here.

Assuming Spray Tan is Wiltfong? If so I approve of the nickname. Otherwise I completely agree it's a thing Murray will have to learn. Anything you say to a recruit - you are saying to all the recruits and the other coaches.

there's a shitton honestly.

First, do you know what the number is for OU in this class? You guys have 14 right now - and signed 23 last year but with 4 guys in from the portal - I don't know where each of the counters go. So do you have numbers to count back so that you can take a full 25, even with the transfers? I've tried to find it but no definitive answer. I am assuming that the way the Gilliam/Burris/Abiara situations played out that OU is feeling the numbers crunch despite only having 14 (officially) in the boat.

Safe to assume that Byrd was the silent at the Summit?

I think we'll see Farooq, Byrd, Wheaton, and I assume in the end Foster added to the class - which gets it to 18. I imagine you will fight for Leigh until the fax is sent it. Same with Jardin Gilbert, is that a good assumption? Do you have any idea who else will end up with those last few spots?

Is Trevin Wallace (the BC LB commit) still a possibility? Is Chase Hattley a possibility or is his status dependent on Gilbert? is there is scenario where they'd take Hattley and Gilbert?

the 2022 thread could use some discussion as well - esp with how deep the in-state crop is for Oklahoma in 2022.

Here's my conspiracy theory and no I'm not going to parse their penalty stats.  It just feels right.  Truthiness.  I think a not insignificant factor to this is the shittastic and corrupt Big XII officials who let the blowu Oline, WRs and DBs hold on every play in an effort to get them into the CFB playoffs (especially in the Big XII title games when they're high enough to get in) and the associated payday for the league.  Then when they actually have to win on merit and get called on their cheating correctly, the faceplant on the national stage.  Every damn time.

Prove me wrong.

Their DBs committing PI every play knowing the refs won't call it more than once every 5 or so plays was actually good coaching when Grinch had a defense full of Mike Stoops players.

It's an interesting question, but the way we saw it was very much the opposite, at least through the Stoops era.  Still related to refs, but we always believed that OU's offense was predicated around BigXII refs being very tight on PI calls, giving the receivers more free run in the secondary, forcing defenders to be too passive in coverage.  Then, when BCS games or Playoff games hit, the much looser ACC or Big 10 officials would allow just about anything short of a full tackle downfield.  OU's passing game wasn't able to adjust, and the defenses couldn't magically become more physical for one game to take advantage of the shift.  Watch the Florida/OU 2008 game for a prime example of this, in my opinion.  OU averaged 7.5 penalties a game that year, and got 4 called on them in the title game.  Florida was taking heads off in the secondary with little to no repercussions.

The second point tex makes definitely reflects Grinch trying to adapt our play to the national style and prepare for competition outside the BigXII.  This is a wise move, and hopefully helps to address everyone's concern that OU for years has been content winning the BigXII and being pantsed in the postseason.

I also want to be clear, this is in no way blaming refs for OU's failures.  If this is something a fan notices, then a coach has to be responsible enough to realize the same things and make systemic change to keep it from happening in the future.  They should have seen in 2003 things were trending the wrong way, but I believe Bob truly thought he had to play to win the BigXII first and let the dice roll for everything after that.

I agree with this. Their winning also had to do with us shitting the bed, and then it's a cake walk for them. We're their real only competition talent-wise, but we can't hire anyone with an IQ higher than a regular Okie meth user. Once they play a team with equal talent they don't see year in and year out they shit everywhere. It's not a coincidence that every single team outside of the conference works their sorry asses with ease.

Maybe due to the fact that turnovers were historically poor for the OU defense. Or maybe, Hurts had fumble-itis on the offensive side (it happens). Just imagine if OU D got any turnovers then those games would start turning into romps especially with teams like Kstate and Texas, teams that aren’t great throwing the ball. Also, explain how Ehlinger may go down as the losingest (is that a word) FB in UT history. Good teams win close games, Texas hasn’t shown the penchant to do it. Also, Texas has more meth users and mobile homes than Oklahoma.

Idk if we have dumb fucks as coaches or it's a mental thing?  Do we over plan?  Flip side is this game means alot to the okies.  They cancel school if they win, I mean wtf?  I've always thought the ou ownage of this conference is the main reason why Stoops and now Lincoln never left.

Honestly, you should consider the rush spot as a DL guy, to an extent. So add Bonnito and I guess Terry.

Basically, Stokes is the sole player with experience, and he's been just OK so far. DL will be an even bigger uncertainly than it was expected to be.

I actually agree with you. They make money hand over Fist just for butt fucking us. You would think just on talent alone we could win, but Jesus Christ it's like we plan for a pee wee game. It's not like we don't get a shit ton more highly ranked players. They have a simple system that everyone outside of the conference can seem to figure out, and all of our coaches stand there with fingers up each other's asses. It almost feels like we purposely hire mentally disabled coaches.
