Webb Co. Sheriff says stay our of Nuevo Laredo (ongoing cartel warfare today)

Some recent kidnappings at the Nuevo Progreso Bridge crossing as well. I was in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico a few days ago and it was all the talk.

Since I drive a 4x4 SUV I won't take it across the river and instead park it on the Texas side of the border. It would be prime pickings in Mexico and since I can't take guns with me, I'd have to give up my vehicle.

No they're not.  I was just there a year ago.

Same as it ever was (with an exception here and there) in Lajitas, Terlingua, Study Butte, etc.

There's so much unseen surveilance going on out there.

Now Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, Juarez, all that?  Fuck to the no.

Sr year in HS '91 I think?  Padre Island.  Shit, we'd walk across to Matamoros.  spin around in the barber chair doing shots of God know's what.  All link hands and get hooked up to the battery.  Buy the entire box of chicle (sp?) gum from the little kids because it's fucking delicious but lasts about as long as fruit stripe gum.

Yeah I was down there over the weekend.  Got a bit hairy:

Last line in that clip...

"This is going to make the front page of every paper in America."  Response:  "No it won't.  It won't even make the papers in El Paso."

Mutherfuckin' accurate there.

I think Ive mentioned this before, but my customers in Laredo have not been allowed to go over to see there customers F2F for years now, and all of them on this side are Hispanic. Phones and UPS is how they sell and get product to them.

Very sad.  I used to love going across the border. hit up Ford Nuevo Laredo and a few other end users, then hit the Cadillac Grill (or was it Cadillar Bar?).  Good times.

Some time back I asked two different Mexican friends “why can’t I drive from Texas through Tamaulipas to Yucatán?” and both were like “NO”.

That would be like a longhaired hippie driving from NYC to Mobile in a VW van 50 years ago.

Crossed at Nuevo Laredo last summer and it wasn't too bad, but we were just going straight through to Monterrey. The inlaws crossed there over thanksgiving and there were cops escorting people from the place where you get you passport stamped to the highway. So I guess you could say things have been heating up.

My FIL has a house in a village about an hour north of Queretaro and we were planning on going there for a month since I get 4 weeks of parental leave, but we may have to change plans or at least adjust where we travel through.

We (Mom, Dad, teenage sister and I) drove from Houston to Guadalajara in the mid 80s.  There was miscommunication between my dad and our friends about how we were getting there.  Apparently the conversation about us having a car meant "We dont need to pick you up from the airport because you'll have a car get you" to our friends and "We'll have a car because we're driving the whole way" to my dad.

So we drive 1000 miles south overr a few days and show up at their house. The "neighborhood" they lived in was within a compound surrounded by a solid wall with two entrances, both manned by armed guards.  There were always two men on duty and at least one was always carrying an AR type rifle on a sling.  When our friends realize that we drove they were incredulous.

The father took my dad aside and read him the riot act.  He was pissed at my dad for driving there.  My mom is picking up on what's happening and asks their mom "Why so worried."  Her reply was "We don't even drive outside of the city let alone THROUGH Mexico."

And we drove back a week later.  Looking back, it was probably the stupidest thing I have ever participated in but what choice did I have as a 15 or 16 year old.

Troof. My folks were just down in Lajitas a few months ago for Voices From Both Sides. There are tons of places along the border that are the same as they’ve always been, perfectly safe.

Only place I’ll crossover is Nuevo Progreso. Was there in July and it was fine. You don’t even need a passport to walk back over, but the non-passport line is usually way longer.

how did you not need a passport I thought they were needed now no matter what?

This happens with the holiday times usually. I have had them do that or make you wait a bit for a line of cars to get going and tell you to get to the highway as fast as possible with the group of cars.

Same here.   I've never felt uneasy walking across and staying within the first 6 to 7 blocks as that is where all the shops,  farmacias, dentists, notable restaurants like Arturo's and Red Snapper are located.   At this time of year it's usually packed with Winter Texans and the last thing the cartels would want is a bunch of olds from the US getting caught in the crossfire in a street battle in down the main drag.  Imagine the fall out if a few dozen got hurt or killed with many of them being from other states.   The cartels know the war would be joined by new player from the north.

That was gutsy.    The highway between Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa is usually pretty darn dangerous.    There might be safer roads in Iraq, Syria, and Chicago.

Monterrey is really an interesting city though.
