DNA kits revealing some secrets.....

You have to be fucking stupid or crazy to ever submit one of those things

Well, sure, if one has, or expects to have, something to hide. I did it mainly for the disease issue. I also was curious about the details of my European heritage. If my DNA helps solve a crime committed by a relative I’m very much ok with that. If a half sibling turns up I don’t really care.

I’m going to laugh when you get convicted of murder based on the DNA test you submitted because unbeknownst to you you’re adopted and have a serial killer twin that you know nothing about

Sounds like a good movie plot.

Does NMAS have an unknown trim to throw under the bus for all of his criminal activity?

By 1899, Serbia was an independent kingdom.

To be fair, I thought the same thing you did until I looked at Wikipedia. The Ottomans primarily held Serbia for hundreds of years, with the Habsburgs taking over every now and again. Austria-Hungary didn't occupy Serbia until 1914.

I read a book once about the future and they had regeneration Chambers for people, and they made them out of DNA and cells. It was wild! I didn't care for the book (too much sex) but the idea is interesting Well I guess it is the future now!

Family of Dallas woman conceived through 'fertility fraud' files lawsuit against OBGYN

DALLAS - A Dallas woman says she’s the product of 'fertility fraud' after a home DNA test revealed her mother’s former doctor is her biological father. Now, her mother is suing the doctor.

It was just about a year ago that a Dallas woman says her world was turned upside down after learning her father’s true identity.

Katherine Richards is now the plaintiff in a lawsuit against a Virginia OBGYN who she says led her to believe she was receiving an anonymous donor’s sperm in 1980 after having trouble conceiving, but using his own sperm instead.

“How many others are just one Christmas DNA kit from having their lives forever changed?” Richards said.

According to the lawsuit, Julie Druyor of Dallas, Richards’ daughter, learned of the alleged deception and her father’s true identity after receiving a home DNA test kit as a gift. The test revealed she’s half Jewish, which didn’t add up with the information about the supposed anonymous sperm donor. A genealogist helped trace the dots back to the doctor.

“I’m a product of my mother’s abuser,” Druyor said. “I don’t know if I’ll ever come to terms with that.”

The lawsuit says DNA tests also confirmed the doctor used his own sperm again instead of the anonymous donor, as promised, to help Druyor's mother conceive her younger brother.

According to the suit, Druyor says the doctor passed on to her the gene for Tay-Sachs disease, a rare genetic disorder.

“Now, I have to deal with the fact that I’ve passed down his genes,” she said. “Am I going to see him in my children? I hate that I even have to think about that.”

Druyor isn’t alone.

Bev Willhelm of San Diego is suing a doctor who once practiced in California for allegedly doing the exact same thing. Her son, James Mallas Jr. also learning of the alleged fertility fraud through a home DNA test kit.

“It turns my stomach,” Mallas Jr. said. “And to think that he did that to my own mother makes it nearly unbearable.”

As for Druyor, she’s found online support group healing with others who’ve made similar disturbing discoveries.

“Listening to other people share their stories has given me an immense comfort,” she said.

Both of these cases date back several decades. It’s unclear if one of the doctors is still practicing. FOX 4 was unable to reach him for a response. The other now appears to be a drug addiction counselor in California. His office had no comment.

A few months ago I saw a ex post a picture with her sisters and they had a added lady in the photo saying she loved her new found sister.  I messaged her and was like you gained a sister somehow?  Turns out not only did her dad have another kid but one of the sisters she grew up with was adopted and none of them were ever told!  I never really asked but I’m pretty sure this is how this all came to light.

A little backstory - I was born in Jan 1969 (yeah, I'm an old fuck).  Both my parents were 20 at the time.  My dad got drafted and went to 'Nam in mid to late in 1970, came back a year later, we moved to Ft Lee, VA so he could finish out his enlistment, we moved back to Bowie county and lived (what I thought was) a normal American middle class life.  Growing up, I always joked with my dad that he may not be my birth dad because we were so different.  We didn't look alike at all, nor did we share any of the same interests.  He liked to hunt, fish and tinker with cars.  I was the athlete of the family, playing either football, baseball or basketball ALL the time...it pretty much consumed my life (still does).  I'd occasionally go hunting or fishing with him, but all I thought about was sports while doing it.  And he'd coach my sports teams, but didn't really know how to coach us other than the "rock and fire" and "keep you eye on the ball" junk.  But we got along and all was good.  But in the back of my mind I always wondered just a little bit.

Fast-forward to 2009.  I'm helping my son do a simple family tree for a course in high school.  While researching things, I come across and old marriage record showing someone with my dad's name married someone NOT my mom's name in 1968.  I got to looking closer and the marriage occurred in Bowie county. My dad's name is not common at all so I call my mom and ask her about it.  Come to find out, he and my mom broke up a few months after high school and he got pissed and married someone a couple of months later to make her mad. It was annulled about 10 weeks later, but still. Why keep that from me all these years???

Fast-forward again to a few years later in October 2015.  I log into my Facebook account and start scrolling hoping to find posts from my aggy friends in which I can troll.  One of the first posts I scroll across is from my mom. I'd forgotten it was their wedding anniversary. She was posting about celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary.  What the fuck...I'm 46!  So that's another phone call I had to make.  Apparently they were together, but didn't get married until I was 2.  That's the story anyway. True or not, the fact remains I was born a bastard.

I told you all of that so I could tell you this - my wife, daughter and my son's fiancé were in Billings earlier this week wedding dress shopping leaving me alone.  There's only so much porn a 51 yr old man can browse, so I randomly logged into my Ancestory.com account to kill an hour (my typical first refractory period).  This is what I immediately saw:

Screenshot-2021-01-08-203743.jpg

My first reaction was 'no fucking way'.  Then I remembered.....oh yeah, the story of my life has been one big lie after another.  A quick Facebook search turned up a hit in, you guessed it, Bowie county.  Further investigation showed that she's a year younger than me.  We also shared 5 FB friends, and one happened to be the sister of one of my good HS friends who I still occasionally keep in touch with.  So I called my friend, explained my predicament and asked her if she happened to know this possible newfound sibling of mine. After laughing hysterically for a couple of minutes she said she does know who she is, but says she'd ask her sister to try and get more info. An hour later, I get a text that says she was in fact adopted but that her sister didn't know all the details.  She has another friend that is very good friends with her and she's going to call her tomorrow and ask around.

My wife suggested I just send her a message through the website and see if she knows the story. But I noticed on FB that her mom just died two weeks ago from Covid after a two month battle.  I dont want to throw more on her plate just yet.  Obviously she knows she's adopted if my friend's sister knows, but she may not know she has a sibling who is a bastard, and she may not want to know.

Everything I've read the past couple of days regarding the length (cM) and number of segments DNA indicates we are full siblings (typically range from 2200-3400), but there's still a possibility we are half-siblings.  Of course, I have a lot of unanswered questions.  Is she a full sibling?  A half sibling?  Is it even possible she's not a sibling at all?  If she is, did my parents put her up for adoption after I was born?  Could we be full siblings and who I've thought was my dad isn't my birth dad at all?  Because she was born before my parents were married.  Did my dad cheat on my mom and no one but him and the woman he cheated with know about it?  I've got a lot of shit to work through.

I always knew you were a bastard.

That's pretty much in the middle of the range for a full sibling, so it's possible that she is a full sibling your mom put up for adoption while your dad was out of country.  Or one or both of your parents isn't actually related to you.

No, I'm definitely her son. The genes are strong on that side. My son looks just like me, i look like my mom, she looks like her dad, he looked like his dad, etc.

Does your DNA relatives list show anyone or last names you’d know on your dad’s side?

None who I know anyway. But as far as I can tell, there's no way of knowing which side they are on unless you already know them or if they have a family tree that is viewable to the public.

If your mom or dad has done AncestryDNA, it will say "Father's side" or "Mother's side" next to the names of relatives of the parent who has also taken the test. Does Ancestry list any relatives, let's say grandparents to uncles/aunts to second cousins, whose name you should know, but you don't?

You can try uploading your data to GEDMatch or also doing 23andme to see if you can get more info (without asking mom or dad what really happened).

I disagree. Great dating site. Plenty of attractive woman when scrolling through the matches and already have something in common with them.

This is true. I've had to message several attractive women while trying to track down my Tío Louis or find information on my Costa Rican heritage. (That they're attractive is a coincidence.)

Aside from all the b.s. you're finding out about your parents, this could be a good thing.  If she turns out batshit crazy, just ignore her.  (I'm assuming you're no longer living in Bowie.)  On the other had, you could have just gained a really cool sister.

I've always been curious about this, but not sure what I'd uncover. My biological granmother was a sloot(no pics). Pretty certain my grandfather fathered my mother's oldest two sisters, but he for sure didn't the third (Mom was the 4th) as he was stationed in Germany at the time of conception. He raised her as his own, but there was always the question of my Mom and another sibling that was given up for an illegal adoption after she was born.

I broke down and sent her a message on the site last night and she replied a couple of hours ago. She was adopted right from the hospital in Bowie county (must have been much easier back then).  She was born in 1970, a year before my parents married. I'm making a phone call to my parents now.  I've prepared myself that I'm probably going to find out my dad isn't my birth day...if they'll just be honest with me.  And that's cool....he's still my dad.

good luck Burt,

is there any chance that because your dad was in vietnam when your sister was concieved that your mother hid the pregnancy from your dad and just allowed the adoption- maybe with your dad not even knowing?

My many times great grandfather was a sea salt from Maine and he somehow wound up in sw Louisiana in about 1830. We still have this letter he wrote to his brother in Maine that says "Hey dear brother, go over to my wife's house and take a look at that baby she just had and see if it looks like me. If it does, I will send for them. If not, fuck it," or words to that effect. The baby did not, and he married a Cajun and had about nine kids and moved just across the Sabine during the Republic days.

Yeah hopefully he talks to his mom first in case he’s also breaking news to his “dad”.

I called my mom Sunday afternoon.  After a few minutes of small talk about my brother's shithead grandkids and the flurries of snow that caused them to have to run to the grocery store for milk, bread and eggs, I told her I needed to ask her something. She said she already knew what I was going to ask and that it was true...I have a full sister out there born about 18 months after me.

Its also true that my dad isn't my birth dad.  He adopted me right after they were married in 1971. He's always   My dad did not know about my sister, however, as they were not yet together (my mom told him Friday night anticipating that I'd some come calling). Only a handful of people close to my mom knew about my sister, and that breaks my heart.  She and I have only exchanged a message on Ancestry thus far, but I've Facebook stalked her and she's a beautiful lady and thankfully had a great upbringing (but she likes Luke Bryan).  I feel like I've missed out on a lot not having her in my life.  I feel guilty, too, that the reason my mom didn't keep her was because she already had me and could not take care of two kids at the age of 21.  I hope she wants some type of connection, even if its only very casual.  But I'd understand if she doesn't and I never hear from her again.

I'm not mad or upset about any this being hidden.  And I told my parents that, too, and this it doesn't change the way I feel about either of them.  But it IS a lot to process as evident by me still up at 1:30 in the morning.

so who's your Dad? Seems like a pretty big revelation left to explore.

is your mother on the same DNA site or something? and she got the same notification you did?

Otherwise how did she know on Friday- with enough time to tell your father that she had had another kid before they officially got together that she had never mentioned before in 50 years?

good luck learning about your sister.  take it slow with her.... and realize there could be some real latent resentment that comes up once its clear that your mom kept you but gave her away.

- not that i fault the adoption at all- your mom clearly realized she couldnt handle raising two kids under 2 years old with no job.

My wife’s “cousin” was suspected to not be biologically related her whole life on account of her my wife’s uncle marrying a truck stop slut who mysteriously became pregnant around the time they got together. The most bizarre thing was that the “cousin” was genuinely the only one surprised when she got the DNA results.

It suggested who her biological siblings were, but when she reached out to them their default was denial that their dad knocked up some truck stop lot lizard, and skepticism that maybe this lady was coming for some money/inheritance. Approaching her with no expectations is best.

My wife got a 23andme for xmas last year and hasn’t done it yet. She really wants me to do it because she thinks I’m not related to anyone in my family (I look like one of my uncles so I figure she’s wrong). But what if she isn’t? I’m not sure I really want to know. It would explain a few things though.

Guess I left that part out. My wife kept telling me last week to call my mom.  She finally sent her a text half-ass joking that Ancestry.com showed a full sibling.  My mom kind of jokingly said, "yeah, he has a brother" and left it at that. But she knew what was eventually coming.  In hindsight, that's probably good because it gave her time to prepare for it rather than me just dropping the bomb out of the blue.
