A surge in drug-linked gang-violence in Sweden led to a 60% increase in bomb blasts in 2019, government statistics showed on Thursday, as police work to rid the streets of explosives and guns with more officers on patrol.

Sweden has been hit by a wave of shootings and bombings over the past couple of years which police have linked to gang conflicts in major cities, shocking Swedes, who have long considered their country one of the safest in the world.

Some 257 bomb attacks were reported to police last year, up from 162 the previous year, the statistics from the National Council for Crime Prevention showed.

The agency did not give any information about the types of explosives used most frequently or any other details, but Swedish media have reported some attacks using make-shift bombs made from vacuum flasks packed with explosive material. ...

Reuters didn't report whether or not their political class was looking to ban vacuum flasks.

Vacuum flasks actually have a legitimate purpose, outside of trying to killing people.  The police, supported by the Swedish society, did say they were taking steps to reduce access to guns and explosives after a teenager was killed in gun violence.  You only think that extreme because you are using America as a baseline.  In America, we watch a gunman use assault weapons to gun down dozens of kindergartners, and we accepted it without any additional restrictions on the access to these weapons.  That's our baseline, so everything else appears extreme.

People will use the most effective tools available to do a job.  If they don't have access to fully automatic weapons, they will use semi-automatic assault weapons.  But it will be less effective.  If they don't have access to semi-automatic assault weapons, they will use semi-auto weapons without some of those defining characteristics assault weapon characteristics.  But it will be less effective.  If they don't have access to semi-auto long guns, they will use other guns.  But it will be less effective.  If they don't have access to any guns, they will use vacuum canisters with explosives, knives, cars, baseball bats, etc.. But it will be less effective.

No one thinks reducing access to more effective weapons will eliminate murder or make people get along.  It will just make their ability to kill others less effective.  That's the goal.  We are tired of incompetent virgins having the ability to murder dozens of innocent people without much effort.  And that trend (the effectiveness of weapons) will get worse as technology improves without any new regulations. There is a reason that bombing is not the preferred means in the US - because it's not very effective. Consequently, the Swedish murder rate is about a fourth of the US rate.  So it does make a difference.  Better is not perfect, but is still worthwhile.

doesn't look like many, if any, casualties or even injuries related to these.  they appear to be largely carried out for show.

meanwhile...ah, nevermind.

i feel very sorry for people who go through life like workswithweed and incredulity.  that must really suck.

Be sure to let us know when the important bombings happen.

so you're saying that these explosions (which are disconcerting and it sounds like sweden's law enforcement is being tasked with focusing on it) that have resulted in no casualties are consuming your concern trolling for sweden (who has averaged 92 homicides TOTAL per year since 2002) but the 39,773 deaths from guns in our country each year is nothing to concern ourselves with - and only a fucking libtard communist would think that some stricter laws enforcing who is able to acquire such weapons was appropriate.

seems genuine.

The logic here - that Sweden still has crimes and murders despite gun control - would be similar to suggesting that easier access to fully auto, explosives, and RPGs makes sense, because Americans continue to kill each other even without that easy access.

give me a fucking break...

your entree into this thread was to somehow respond to workswithweed's insanely stupid post by making a retarded dad joke associating any of this with a purposefully extreme and erroneous characterization of a center-left socialism political economy.

and you expect me to take you seriously?

I've always associated these kind of bombings with Europe. In the mid 90's, I was in Madrid when ETA set off a bomb about 2 blocks from a restaurant I was eating at, I heard the explosion and saw the aftermath. Then, shortly after that I was in London when the cops evacuated several buildings one of which I was in when an IRA bomb threat was called in. There was also the time I flew out of Heathrow to Madrid a couple of hours before the IRA started firing mortars at the airport. The mortars were duds, I assume that was intentional.

Anyways, I spent a little under a year over there and being bomb aware was certainly a thing back in the day.
