I have Some n95 masks. When am I no longer a crazy fucker for wearing them?

First, you have to learn how to wear them. You need a hermetic seal for them to be effective at stopping the virus. So bend them slightly at the nose. Second, turn on Pornhub and masturbate vigorously while watching your favorite vice. Third, wait for it. Fourth, wait for it. Fifth, now check to see if you were hit in the eye. If you were, you were a dumbass for not wearing eye protection and a dumbass for not knowing that standard masks don't provide a hermetic seal and thus are only partially effective against airborne viruses. They work mainly to block larger airborne particles. Now, wipe down your keyboard and chill the fuck out.

Hi all, this thread is much more informative than on my own board, so thanks for that.
Couple thoughts:
I live close to Charlotte where we have a ton of microbreweries. I was at one on Tuesday night, and they just announced they were closed until further notice. To my knowledge they're the first ones to close outright, so I wonder if something happened there specifically. I think in our county we have about 5 cases so far.

Driving home from the mountains this afternoon and we saw some packed church parking lots. Coupled with stories of people packing bars this weekend and the pictures from airports where people were waiting on lines for hours is really unsettling

I'm in charge of a Meetup group that meets on Wednesday nights in a bookstore. Our group is about 5-10 people, but the bookstore itself is pretty big. I'm not sure if I should cancel for the next few weeks or what. Do you think it's safe to go to friends' houses, etc if it's only a few people? Our local pub can hold about 50, at this point I'm thinking about just holing up inside my house with no contact whatsoever just because I'm not sure if we should be in contact with anybody at this point.

Thanks, just trying to plan out a strategy for the next few weeks or months or whatever. Fortunately I can work from home so that's not an issue.

Welcome! Please cancel any social plans you've got and stay home. In 2 weeks we will see the results of these efforts and undoubtedly wish we'd started isolating sooner.

Wife and I are trying to not go out of the house unless absolutely necessary.

Of course, my 72 year-old dad is likely having quadruple bypass surgery this week, and it’s a very risky procedure. So I may go down to hospital to see him before the surgery. Which is the last place I want to go right now.

Why does she need to get tested?  Just quarantine her and give fluids.  Literally zero will change if she's positive except you're taking her out and others may get it from her.  Kids have had very few issues with complications from COVID.  And if she doesn't have it you'll be in an area where others do have it.  I don't see the point as a physician.

Is there maybe an implied social duty to get tested? You know for data science and shit.

I would cancel the Meetup group for the time being. Actually, why not do a virtual meet up?

I think the response from ChiTown and others in the medical community is that if you aren't in a risk group and aren't showing significant symptoms that you can't control with OTC meds, don't tax doctors' offices with testing just for data's sake, so all those most vulnerable and in most need can get tested.

Nope...there will be a few hundred thousand positives the minute there is widespread testing.  There will be a lot more presumed positive in the demographics where people get it and get over it without much drama at all.  Many will have some loose stools and that's it.  Literally nothing else.  You should have a duty to not go hang around the elderly or those with underlying medical conditions.  That's the important part.

How urgent is his surgery?  If it's stable CAD they may wanna wait.  If he ends up needing a respirator or and ICU bed for any extended period of time, shit could get hairy.  Several local hospitals have cancelled all elective procedures early this week already.

I think that's the best path.  80% will have mild symptoms only.  Stay home whether you think you have or haven't had it - it carries the same recommendation if you don't need hospitalization.  Everyone cutting all social contacts by 80% is the single most effective thing we all can do starting today.

If you get sick at home and the level of distress puts you in the red zone, get tested and evaluated for possible hospitalization - with either isolation or on a soon to be designated Covid ward.

New Orleans had previously cancelled the Block Party and Irish Channel parades, as well as Super Sunday. That picture is NOPD breaking up the party at Tracy’s. Amazingly, NOLA has been extremely proactive about this.

It is crazy and frustrating to me, that as a physician, there is nobody in en emergency response role in the medical community, available to help you with this. And that you are having to ask on a college football message board.  You deserve better and more timely info.  And we, as potential patients, deserve for you to have better and more timely info.

I've been speculating that, although this outbreak is going to have negative outcomes for a LOT of people, we're actually lucky that the disease itself isn't more deadly than it is.  Because down the road, there will be one that is just as contagious as this one, but more deadly.  We''ll need to perform a literal and extensive post mortem on this situation and our response, and figure out global best practices, and then apply those lessons learned for the next one that could be a lot worse.

It's pretty simple.

We need a National Health Security entity like Homeland or Defense, funded to the tune of 10-15% of the federal budget, with hundreds of thousands of beds and ventialtors, billions of healthcare hardware, sitting unused but ready to go at former military bases with maintained runways spread around the country.  In 2019 the defense budget was $686B.  We need to take $100B of that and build/maintain the permanent infrastructure to wage war on health threats to NATIONAL SECURITY.

Very urgent - he can’t stand in his own; late stages of congestive heart failure. The cardiologist said it’s a “C heading towards a D”.  But yeah, talk about out of the frying pan into the fucking fire.

has Italy's curve flattened at all yet? Or do they have another week of exponential growth to look forward to?

Italy just won’t stop.   Something like 20% of their deaths and 15% of their cases verified in the last 24 hours.   And the dramatic rise in deaths is due to the increase from a few weeks ago.

Because if it rains as expected today/Sunday, it’s gonna be packed.

Thinkery is closed thru 3/22.

I'll be surprised if Thinkery re-opens before May.

What -- other than the overarching opinion of the American public -- leads you to believe that this message board has a low opinion of Ohio?
